Hagar Aiming for A Main Start During Fourth Appearance at Chili Bowl Nationals

Inside Line Promotions - MARION, Ark. (Jan. 8, 2018) - Derek Hagar and the Hagar-Proctor Racing team will be invading the River Spirit Expo Center this week during the 32nd annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals.

It will mark Hagar's fourth time competing at the marquee event in Tulsa, Okla.

"It's a good, fun week, but it's a long week," he said. "We'll go out there and try to do the best we can. There's 350 entries so you have to have luck on your side. It's one of those deals where it's luck of the draw, luck of the heat race and you have to pass cars every time you hit the track."

Hagar returned to the event last year for the first time since 2009. Mechanical problems hampered him throughout the event as he endured a DNF during the preliminary night B Main before capping the weekend in a G Main during the finale.

This year he enters the event with his team, which competed last month in Illinois with mixed results.

"Hopefully we got some bugs worked out," he said. "We had a break issue. On a positive note the motor ran fine. We just need to stay on top of everything and make every time we hit the track count."

Hagar said his focus is to reach new heights.

"My goal is to make the A Main on the preliminary night and Saturday night," he said. "It's a tough task, but that'd be a big accomplishment for our team."

Hanks Hungry to Hit the Track for Chili Bowl Nationals Debut

Inside Line Promotions - BURLISON, Tenn. (Jan. 8, 2018) - Brandon Hanks can hardly wait to make his Chili Bowl Midget Nationals debut this week.

Hanks will drive for Chris Chappue during the 32nd edition of the marquee event, which features his preliminary night on Wednesday leading into Saturday's finale inside the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla.

"I can't even focus at work I'm ready to get there," Hanks said. "Ever since we got the news the days get slower and slower. Thankfully it's almost here. I'm ready to get there and get unloaded and practice to get some laps under my belt."

Hanks hasn't piloted a midget in real life, but has tried to make the most of racing one online via iRacing.

"I've been going home and running 100 laps every night on the shortest track that iRacing offers," he said. "I've also been watching videos trying to learn."

Hanks said he is entering the event with an open mind and hopes to progress each time he hits the track.

"It's tough going to an event like this, especially when you haven't driven a midget before," he said. "There are a lot of things to overcome. I want to thank Chris for the opportunity. Hopefully we can put together a solid week and have a good time."

Swindell Seeking Sixth Chili Bowl Nationals Victory

Inside Line Promotions - GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (Jan. 8, 2018) - Sammy Swindell is hungry to return to Victory Lane at the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals.

Swindell has recorded the most events wins - five - and has earned the most Vacuworx Invitational Race of Champions victories - four - and he's heading to the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla., this week in search of a couple more trips into the Winner's Circle during the 32nd edition of the famed event.

"It's like going to any other place you've gone a lot and run well," he said. "It's easier because you know you have the setups pretty close. Things have to change depending on the way the race track is, but that's the same way it is at any dirt track. I can go in there and feel pretty confident the car will be pretty close every time."

Swindell will participate in the Vacuworx Invitational Race of Champions on Tuesday prior to his preliminary night on Wednesday. The event concludes on Saturday.

"This winter I haven't had to be occupied with anything else and I've been able to take time to concentrate on the cars and everything," he said. "This year I'm a little ahead of a lot of things because I've had time to fine-tune things. I think I'm as prepared as I've ever been and we're in the best shape as we've been in. You can't do anything about the way the races play out, where you draw or who you're racing. We've always had cars capable of winning, but things have taken us out. The last few years we've gone from the back to the front. We have to have some of the breaks go our way and the wins will come."

Swindell claimed the event title in 1989, 1992, 1996, 1998 and 2009 and he wants to add an unprecedented sixth victory to his list, which would be astounding given this is the only midget race he runs each year.

"It's a different feel," he said. "Sometimes it takes a corner or a lap. It seems like my hands are in the wrong place because I'm used to running the sprint car. These things you turn to the right quite a bit more. The first corner I'm having to replace my hands and start over. Once I've got through the first practice everything is fine."

Swindell would also like to thank Acme Graphix & Design, CP Pistons, High Performance Lubricants, Simpson Race Products, Brown & Miller Racing Solutions, Rossie Feed & Grain, FK Rod Ends, Sweet Manufacturing, Schoenfeld Headers, MyRacePass and Inside Line Promotions for their continued support.
