Top NeSmith Racing Drivers Honored at Annual Awards Banquet

DAWSONVILLE, GA - Drivers, race teams, sponsors, family members and special guests packed into the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and Thunder Road Museum for the NeSmith Racing Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday night.  The Top 10 drivers in two Touring Divisions and three Weekly Racing Series Divisions were honored, plus other Special Awards that were presented.

 

                Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, TN hoisted the NeSmith Cup and a check for $10,000 for winning his second straight NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Championship.  Hedgecock joins David Earl Gentry (2006-2007), Eric Cooley (2009-2010), and National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee Ronnie Johnson (2013-2014-2015) as a multiple champion.

 

                Grant Garrison of Walton, KY was honored as the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Year.  Garrison finished second in the 2017 NeSmith Chevrolet Late Model National points chase. 

 

The Beyea Headers Hard Charger of the Year award went to 14-year-old Colton Horner of Katy, TX.  Horner finished third in the 2017 NeSmith Late Model National Touring point standings.  Rocket Chassis of Shinnston, WV won the NeSmith Late Model Touring Chassis Manufactures Award for the fourth time.

 

Devin Dixon of Apollo Beach, FL swept the top honors in the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series.  Dixon was presented the Chevrolet Performance Cup and a check for $10,000 as the 2017 Chevy Super Series National Champion and he also won the Chevy Super Series Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Year Award.

 

Seventeen-year-old Reece Vaught of Aurora, NE was honored as the 2017 Sunoco Young Guns Challenge Series Champion.  The Sunoco Young Guns Challenge Series is a special series for NeSmith Late Model drivers 18 years of age and younger.

 

The NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Promoter of the Year Award went to Jerry and Mitzi Russell of Camden Speedway in Camden, TN.  This award recognizes a track promoter that excels in working with competitors, fans, sponsors, and in an administrative role with the series. 

 

Camden Speedway will feature all four NeSmith Racing Weekly Racing Series Divisions in 2018 that include the NeSmith Chevrolet 604 Late Model Division, the NeSmith Chevrolet 602 Late Model Sportsman Division, the NeSmith Performance Street Stock Division, and the newest NeSmith Racing Weekly Division, the Crate Racin' USA Modified Sportsman Division.

 

The 2017 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model National Champion Josh Leonard of Gibbon, NE pocketed a $10,000 check.  Other NeSmith Racing Weekly Racing Series Champions were Josh Tomlin of Hayti, MO in the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division, and Kyle Clifton of Ranburne, AL in the NeSmith Chevrolet 602 Late Model Sportsman Division.

 

Trak-Star Race Cars built by Boland Performance of Cuba, AL was awarded the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufactures Challenge Championship for the seventh time and for the fourth straight year.

 

Mike Boland of Cuba, AL was the 2017 recipient of the Chevrolet Performance Bob Cross Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award.  Boland was recognized for his 38 year career as a dirt late model driver and constructor.  Boland joins Ronnie Johnson (2010), Bill Martens (2011), Jeff Purvis (2012), Roby Helm (2013), Charles Roberts (2014), Johnny Stokes (2015), and NeSmith Chevrolet (2016) as a Chevrolet Performance Bob Cross Memorial Lifetime Award recipient.
