Ashley Newman Takes First Checkered Flag of 2017

Dyersburg, Tennessee (03/13/17) – Over the weekend Jim Seratt Racing once again found itself in Victory Lane with the team’s latest triumph coming at Whynot Motorsports Park, where Ashley Newman stormed from deep in the field to score the opening night Modified win in the inaugural Battle of the States.

“I figured since Preston [Seratt] got a win last week, that I better get in gear and win one this week to keep pace with him,” laughed Newman. “Seriously though, I can’t thank Mr. Jim Seratt and Preston enough for this great opportunity. They’ve given me a great opportunity with this team, and I’m just glad to put this #73 MBR Race Car/ Mullins Racing Engine Modified in Victory Lane.”

Jim Seratt Racing was back in action on Friday night with Preston Seratt and Ashley Newman competing in the opening round of the two-day Battle of the States at Whynot Motorsports Park (Meridian, Mississippi). With both drivers drawing for their starting spots in the heats, Seratt came from the tail of the field to place 5th, while Ashley came from the back of his heat to finish 8th.

In the feature, Ashley Newman methodically wheeled his way from the back of the pack to the lead, capturing his first victory of the season. Meanwhile, Preston crossed the finish line back in 4th. Ben Stephens, Toby Hodge, Seratt, and Randy King rounded out the Top 5 finishers.

The second night of the 4th annual Battle of the States was postponed due to inclement weather.

“Obviously I would’ve loved to have gotten another win, but as long as one of these team cars is getting the victory that’s really all that matters,” said Seratt. “We’re starting to get a good handle on these new cars. We’re going to take the next few weeks to go through them before racing season kicks into high gear.”

Chris Ferguson Loses Heartbreaker at Carolina; County Line Up Next

Mt. Holly, North Carolina (03/13/17) – It seemed as though Saturday night had been a perfect outing for Chris Ferguson in the annual Skyler Trull Memorial at Carolina Speedway.

He set fast time and led every lap of the feature. Unfortunately, his hopes of a perfect night were nixed when he came up 6-pounds light at the scales after the feature in his Champion Spark Plugs #22 Rocket Chassis/ Clements Racing Engine Super Late Model.

“I’m really at a loss for how we came up light,” said Ferguson. “The only thing I can figure is that we had a lot of caution laps, so maybe I burnt more fuel than I expected. Either way it was a tough way to lose a race, but I’m so very proud of our team and their hard work. Hopefully we can bounce back this week with a win.”

Chris Ferguson pulled double duty in Carolina Speedway's Skyler Trull Memorial in both the Crate and Super Late Model divisions on Saturday night.

In the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series, "Fergy" timed in fastest out of 23 entries. At the start of the feature, outside front-row starter Johnny Pursley jumped to the lead early. After chasing down Pursley for the first 15 laps, the Champion Spark Plugs powered #22 drove around the leader on the outside of turns 3 and 4. After taking the top spot Ferguson led the remaining 25 circuits to capture what everyone thought was his fourth Skyler Trull Memorial win.

However, upon weighing the car after the feature, the #22 car came up 6-pounds light. Unfortunately, Fergy was disqualified from the feature event for not making minimum weight.

Immediately following the Super Late Model feature, Ferguson jumped into the Jeremy Bullins-owned #22 Rocket Chassis Crate Late Model. After qualifying 7th and winning his preliminary heat race, "Fergy" rolled off for the feature in the 7th-starting spot. Using the bottom groove, the Joes Racing Products #22 car made his way to the 3rd-position. Using a late race restart, Ferguson diced his way into the 2nd-position. Unfortunately, the feature ended a few laps too short for the hometown driver, after closing in on feature winner Timbo Mangum nearing the checkered flag.

Chris Ferguson Motorsports would like to thank all of our crew, sponsors, family, friends, and fans that support them. We appreciate everything you guys do for us

Clauson-Marshall Racing Poised to Chase Down USAC Midget Crown

Lonnie Wheatley, NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (March 13, 2017) – The race cars are prepped and ready to hit the track.  And so are the three drivers as Clauson-Marshall Racing is set to pursue the 2017 USAC National Midget championship.

The potent three-car team features Tyler Courtney, Shane Golobic and Justin Grant, each of whom goes after a first USAC National title.  Courtney and Grant both picked off preliminary feature wins at this January’s Chili Bowl Nationals with all three finishing among the top 15 in the championship finale.

The title pursuit begins with the Second Annual Shamrock Classic at Du Quoin’s Southern Illinois Center on Saturday night, March 18.

“I am really proud of the lineup we have assembled for our inaugural season,” team co-owner Tim Clauson commented.  “While our original plan was to run a two-car team for the championship with Tyler and Shane, the opportunity to add Justin was one we just couldn’t pass up.”

Clauson goes on to say, “All three of the drivers have won in our cars, and now to have a team that will allow them the chance to compete for a championship is very exciting.  All three drivers are professional race car drivers and the type of people we want our development drivers to look up to.”

Courtney is no stranger to the team, having worked with the Clauson’s in the past to earn his first shot at Midget racing several years ago.  Familiar with the team’s approach, Courtney was a natural fit for the CMR team aboard the Driven2SaveLives No. 7bc.

“I’m really excited for this season and to contend for my first national midget championship,” Courtney comments.  “We have a solid group of guys with a lot of momentum on our side from the winter season that hopefully transfers into this season.  It’s gonna be a great year with two really good teammates and one really solid team.”

A winner of both Sprint Car and Midget races under the tutelage of Tim Clauson and last year’s Inaugural Shamrock Classic in a car prepared by Clauson and Tyler Ransbottom, Fremont, California’s Shane Golobic will take the wheel of the Matt Wood Racing/Clauson-Marshall Racing Elk Grove Ford No. 17w.

“I am excited and thankful for a full season behind the wheel of the Matt Wood Racing/Clauson Marshall 17w,” Golobic says. “I enjoy racing with Matt, Tim, Tyler, and the rest of the CMR team and I have no doubt that we will be very successful in 2017.”

The partnership with Matt Wood Racing carries over from the Chili Bowl.  "To me, this team should be called ‘We loved Bryan Racing’,” Wood states.  “I've never met a person that impacted my life the way Bryan did.

“I'm honored to have an opportunity to represent Bryan and be affiliated with the Driven2SaveLives campaign,” Wood continues.  “This USAC midget season will be the best ever.  It's no secret that the road to the USAC Midget championship goes through Keith Kunz Racing.  With this lineup of drivers and the talent of Tim Clauson, I predict next year it goes thru CMR/MWR".

Filling out the potent Clauson-Marshall Racing USAC Midget stable is Justin Grant, a California native like Golobic who led the CMR team at the Chili Bowl with a fifth-place finish in the finale.  Grant will wheel the CMR No. 39bc.

“The addition of a driver like Justin, whose passion for the sport is second to none and who really came through for us at this year’s Chili Bowl, was really an opportunity we had to make happen,” Tim Clauson explains.  “I know how hard Justin has worked and sacrificed to earn his opportunities over the years. To be in a position to reward that hard work and passion is really what this team is all about.”

Grant is ready for the opportunity to pursue the USAC Midget crown.  “I am very grateful for the opportunity to compete for the 2017 USAC National Midget championship with the Clauson-Marshall Racing team,” Grant says.  “Between Tim Clauson’s dedication and knowledge and the Marshalls’ commitment to this team and our sport as a whole, I couldn’t ask for better people to work with.

“Having a seat in the 39BC Midget will provide me not only a chance to race for wins and a championship title, but also an opportunity to learn from a great team and talented teammates both on and off the race track,” Grant says.  “Clauson-Marshall Racing is highly professional, as well as very family oriented and I am honored to be a part of it as we chase wins, a championship and hope to honor Bryan’s memory.”

Richard Marshall is eager to see the CMR team take to the track in 2017.

“After seeing the teamwork displayed by these guys at this year’s Chili Bowl, I could not be more excited to keep it going for the 2017 USAC championship campaign,” Marshall says.  “These three drivers are winners on and off the track.  They carry themselves in a way that would make Bryan proud and consequently will be great mentors for Clauson-Marshall Development drivers.  I can’t wait to get to the track!”

It all begins Saturday night in Du Quoin before the 27-race slate of events resumes in April with the Kokomo Grand Prix.

Blackshear, Georgia (03/13/17) – For the second-straight week, Rhett Carter powered his Mac Forestry #44 Taylor Pools/ Rocket Chassis XR1 / Wildcat Performance Engines Late Model to a triumph. His latest victory came on Saturday night at Cochran Motor Speedway and was worth $2,000.

Rhett Carter spent his weekend at Cochran Motor Speedway (Cochran, Georgia) where he entered three events in two days. The weekend opened on Friday with a $2,000-to-win, NeSmith Dirt Late Model Series event. With 37 entries on hand Rhett qualified for the feature before registering a 19th-place finish.

Inside Line Promotions - SHAWNEE, Okla. (March 13, 2017) - Seth Bergman is aiming for his first career Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship this season and it all begins this weekend at the 44th annual Spring Nationals.

The series opens its season this Friday and Saturday at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, where Bergman has been a contender almost every time out the past few seasons.

"Devil's Bowl Speedway is a unique track that takes a lot of laps to learn how to run correctly," he said. "We have figured out a good package on how to set up the car there and I've gained more confidence running there each year."

Bergman enters this weekend on a four-race top-10 streak at the half-mile oval during the past two seasons. He finished second in his lone visit last year after placing fifth, sixth and fourth, respectively, during three races in 2015.

Bergman scored a feature victory at the oval in 2014. Additionally, he has earned at least one top five there each season dating back to 2013 and at least one top 10 per season since 2012.

"We are excited to kick off the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour season this weekend at a track we've run well at," he said. "Our goal is to start the year on the right foot by winning a race or two."

Bergman has recorded at least one Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour feature victory during each of the past five years and he has finished in the top eight in the championship standings for six consecutive seasons.

Swindell Takes Five-Decade Winning Streak into Devil's Bowl Speedway This Weekend

Inside Line Promotions - GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (March 13, 2017) - Sammy Swindell has a five-decade winning streak at Devil's Bowl Speedway, where he will kick off his sprint car season this weekend at the 44th annual Spring Nationals.

Swindell will drive for A.G. Rains this Friday and Saturday at the marquee Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event in Mesquite, Texas, where he has won main events in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s.

"We ran there before and were definitely a quick car," he said. "We probably had a good shot at winning one last year until the track rubbered down. Most every time we've run together we've been right up front or have had an opportunity to win races every time. You can't ask for much more than that."

Swindell and Rains recorded four feature victories together last season and came up just short of earning another at Devil's Bowl Speedway, where they placed fourth on the opening night before ending second in the finale last October.

"We've been around each other for a long time," Swindell said. "They've bought my used parts over the years and I've helped them with how they put their cars together and set things up. Pretty much I've trained A.G. to do things the way I'd do it so that's a big plus. Him and his dad build their own motors so they understand that part of it, too."

Swindell said the team will compete in approximately 25-to-30 events this season starting this weekend at a track he's visited Victory Lane at numerous times.

"I've won quite a few there," he said. "It's a little different. It's not like most tracks. One end of the track is tight entering and opens up and the other is really open and tightens getting off turn four. You have to run the car quite a bit different from one end to the other. I think it puts more of the driver into it."

Swindell has scored a dozen career Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour wins during his career, including two in 1995 and one in 2010 at Devil's Bowl Speedway.

Swindell also has 12 career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victories at Devil's Bowl Speedway.

Sides Battles for Top 10s Early in Las Vegas With World of Outlaws

Inside Line Promotions - LAS VEGAS (March 13, 2017) - Jason Sides was in contention to extend his top-10 streak at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas to nine consecutive seasons before bad luck derailed him both nights last weekend during the FVP Outlaw Showdown with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.

The action began on Thursday with Sides qualifying eighth quickest in his group. He then finished where he started - fourth - in a heat race to lock into the 15th starting position for the main event.

"I lost a few positions and then I started moving forward," he said. "The track was really rough. I started going high into turn one and cutting down across the holes. It was pretty good. About the fourth time I did it I must have turned down early. It bounced real hard and when it came down the left rear tire caught and over it went."

Sides was battling for a top-10 result late in the race when the mishap resulted in a DNF following the flip.

The team fixed the car for Friday's finale at the half-mile oval, where Sides timed in fourth quickest in his group. Unfortunately, that lined him up on the outside of the front row of a heat race and the outside lane was not the place to start.

"They did a good job getting the track smoother from Thursday, but that meant there wasn't much moisture in the track," he said. "The outside was really slick. We didn't get a very good start."

Sides ended third to miss locking into the dash by only one position. That lined him up on the outside of the sixth row for the feature.

"We started out all right, but the longer the race went the worse it was," he said. "It seemed like everywhere I went was the wrong lane."

After closing in on the top 10 early, Sides faded to a 17th -place result.

He will return to action this Friday and Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., with the World of Outlaws.
