Ricky Thornton Jr. Stays Hot with Back-To-Back Five-Figure Wins
29th Dirt Late Model Dream Awaits

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (06/05/23) – After a heartbreak less than a week earlier in the Show-Me 100 Ricky Thornton Jr. persevered to register back-to-back wins aboard his SSI Motorsports / Hoker Trucking No. 20RT Dyno One Inc. / Excel Floor Covering / Sub-Surface of Indiana/ Longhorn Chassis/ Clements Racing Engine Super Late Model.

First, Thornton Jr. rallied to win the Castrol FloRacing Night in America event on Wednesday evening at Kentucky’s Florence Speedway, and then he hit the ground running in the Historic 100 weekend at West Virginia Motor Speedway with a $10,000 triumph on Friday evening. Additionally, he earned the pole position for the $50,000-to-win finale on Saturday night before Mother Nature postponed the feature.

“There’s no quit in this team, and while we were obviously discouraged after the Show-Me 100, we just put our heads down and kept grinding. Todd and Vickie Burns give me everything I need to be successful, and my team works so hard, and we showed it last week. It was a bummer to see Saturday night’s feature at WVMS postponed by rain because I think we had the car to beat there too,” Ricky Thornton Jr. said. “Our team is excited to head to Eldora (Speedway) this week for the Dream. Hopefully I can get another six-figure win.”

Putting his souring ending in the Show-Me 100 behind him, Ricky Thornton Jr. returned to action on Wednesday with the Castrol FloRacing Night in America at Florence Speedway (Walton, Ky.) for the seventh round of the series.

Drawing 32 entries, Thornton raced his way into the main event with a third-to-first showing in his heat race after recording the sixth-fastest qualifying lap in his group.

Pacing his way to the front, Ricky overtook race-long leader Bobby Pierce on lap 44 and went onto pick up his 11th win of the season and third-career CFNiA triumph. He banked a $23,023 payday ahead of Pierce, Jonathan Davenport, Tim McCreadie, and Hudson O’Neal.

Ricky climbed to fifth in the latest Castrol FloRacing Night in America point standings.

To kick off a doubleheader weekend with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS), Ricky invaded West Virginia Motor Speedway (Mineral Wells, W. Va.) on Friday for the Historic 100.

With 26 cars entered, Thornton topped the speed charts in time trials with an 18.939-second lap before placing first in his heat. Regaining the lead on lap 19 with a nifty move from third-to-first, Ricky rolled to his sixth LOLMDS victory of the season, which was worth $10,000.

He enjoyed his 12th triumph of the 2023 campaign ahead of Tim McCreadie, Daulton Wilson, Hudson O’Neal, and Jimmy Owens.

Saturday’s $50,000-to-win finale was postponed by wet weather to another date to be determined. When action resumes RTJ will start from the pole position.

Thornton holds a 165-point advantage atop the latest LOLMDS point standings.

LOUDON, Tenn. (06/05/23) – Cory Hedgecock’s march through the 2023 season continued over the weekend with a clean sweep of Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series action in Tennessee and Alabama aboard his W.E. “This BMF Race Car just keeps getting the job done week after week, and it’s giving me even more notes to share with our customers, and that gets me fired up. Car was on point all weekend, and my team busted their butts. End result was two big checks for the shop wall,” Hedgecock commented. “We’re ready to head to Eldora (Speedway) this week. That place hasn’t been the nicest to me, but we’re going to keep digging until we get it figured out. Thanks to everyone who supports this program!”

Cory Hedgecock entered his K&P Used Cars No. 23 Late Model into battle at I-75 Raceway (Sweetwater, Tenn.) on Friday to kick off a pair of events with the Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series.

Pulling off a clean sweep of the program, Hedgecock followed up the fast time honors with a flag-to-flag victory in the feature. He held off Ricky Weiss despite a deflating flat tire to secure his ninth win of the season and $5,000 payday.

Weiss, Chip Brindle, Mark Whitener, and Blake Craft completed the top-five finishers in the 50-lap affair.

For the Golden Hornet 50 on Saturday at Talladega Short Track (Eastaboga, Ala.), Cory set a blistering pace in time trials with a 14.369-second lap before placing first in his heat race.

Once again leading flag-to-flag in the main event, Hedgecock soared to his second win in as many nights and 10th of the 2023 campaign.

He banked a $10,000 prize ahead of Parker Martin, Trynt Lloyd, Ryan King, and Cruz Skinner.

Pair of Weekend Top-5 Finishes for Hudson O’Neal and Rocket1 Racing
Sights Set on Dirt Late Model Dream XXIX This Week at Eldora Speedway

SHINNSTON, W.Va. (06/05/23) – Hudson O’Neal battled adversity to register a pair of Top-5 finishes last week with his Rocket1 Racing / Valvoline / Seubert Calf Ranches No. 1 Ace Metal Works / XR1 Rocket Chassis / Durham Racing Engine Super Late Model.

Ricky charged to a fifth-place finish in Castrol FloRacing Night in America action on Wednesday night at Florence Speedway before adding a fourth-place performance in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series action on Friday night at West Virginia Motor Speedway.

“It felt like we were behind the eight-ball all weekend. I got behind in qualifying on Wednesday at Florence (Speedway), but we were able to rally from 16th to finish fifth in the feature. On Friday at West Virginia Motor Speedway we started sixth and were able to claw to a fourth-place finish. Then on Saturday I caught the wall in qualifying. My team busted their tails to get the car back together and I was able to race from ninth-to-fourth in the heat race, but then the feature got rained out,” O’Neal shared. “This week, I’m looking forward to getting back to Eldora (Speedway) for the Dream.

“We had a good car there back in April at the Castrol (FloRacing Night in America event), but a flat tire cost us the win. We’re going to take what we learned that night and go full speed ahead after a crown jewel victory this week.”

Hudson O’Neal returned to the driver’s seat of the Seubert Calf Ranches No. 1 Rocket1 Racing Late Model on Wednesday night at Florence Speedway (Union, Ky.) for the seventh round of the Castrol FloRacing Night in America miniseries.

Amongst a field of 32 Late Model competitors, O’Neal edged his way into the $23,023-to-win A-Main with the fourth-and-final transfer spot his heat. Wheeling his way into the top-five, Hudson passed 11 cars in the 50-lap affair to register a fifth-place finish.

He trailed Ricky Thornton Jr., Bobby Pierce, Jonathan Davenport, and Tim McCreadie in the finishing order.

Hudson remains atop the latest Castrol FloRacing Night in America point standings.

On Friday, Rocket1 Racing and O’Neal invaded West Virginia Motor Speedway (Mineral Wells, W. Va.) for the two-day event with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS). With a runner-up performance in his heat placing him on the third row for Friday’s $5,000-to-win prelim, Hudson inched forward two positions to place fourth, which came behind Ricky Thornton Jr., Tim McCreadie, and Daulton Wilson with Jimmy Owens coming in fifth.
Hudson raced his way into Saturday’s $50,000-to-win Historic 100 with an impressive ninth-to-fourth run in his heat race, but Mother Nature forced officials to postpone the 50-lapper to a date to be later named.

O'Neal is currently second in the LOLMDS points chase.

Full results from the events available at www.FloSeries.com and www.LucasDirt.com .

Brian Shirley Pockets $15,000 for Fourth-Career PIR World 50 Triumph
Dirt Late Model Dream XXIX Next on the Docket

CHILTON, Wis. (06/05/23) – One night after narrowly missing a World of Outlaws (WoO) Case Late Model Series victory, Brian Shirley claimed redemption on Saturday with a $15,000 series triumph at Paducah International Raceway behind the wheel of his Bob Cullen Racing / Thomason Express No. 3s J&J Ventures & Gaming/ Hoker Trucking / XR1 Rocket Chassis / Durham Racing Engine Super Late Model.

Shirley’s fourth-career triumph in the World 50 marked his second win of the year and seventh-career WoO victory. The Illinois racer inherited the lead on lap 33 after pacesetter, Bobby Pierce, slowed with a flat tire.

“Bobby (Pierce) was leading, and I don’t know if I would have got by him,” Shirley said in Victory Lane. “We had a good car and it was capable of winning. It was nice to have a little fortune go our way. This team … everyone’s been working really hard. That was … woo … the hardest 50 laps I think I raced in a long time. “Even last night, I feel I’m more wore out tonight. Just can’t thank Bob and Lisa Cullen enough. … Everybody has been trying to be better for us.”

Taking on a trio of events over the weekend with the World of Outlaws (WoO) CASE Construction Equipment Late Models, Brian Shirley capped a successful run through the Midwest with his second overall win of the season, which was worth $15,000 in the USA World 50 at Paducah International Raceway.

Getting the win on Saturday, June 3, the night started eighth quick (15.493-seconds) out of 28. Runner-up in the second heat race, Shirley, who is currently fifth in tour standings, began his 50-lap quest from fifth.

Picking his way to second by the 28th revolution, the pass for the lead came on Lap 34 when Bobby Pierce, who had led since Lap 21, suffered a right-rear flat. Able to fend off Kyle Bronson, who led the first 20 laps, on the restart, Shirley kept pace from there and made it to the line with 0.644-seconds to spare. The win is his first of the season with the World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Models, and seventh all-time.

He was followed across the finish line by Kyle Bronson, Chris Madden, Nick Hoffman, and Brandon Sheppard.

Leading up to the Kentucky victory, the Bob Cullen Racing No. 3s started the weekend against a 27-car field at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway on Thursday, June 1. Gridding the field mid-pack after a fifth-place finish in his heat race, the 40-laps ended with Shirley crossing sixth.

Friday, June 2, at Tri-City Speedway (Pontoon Beach, Ill.), the Chatham, Ill. shoe was fast from the start. Quick time in qualifying group B (14.879-seconds) and a heat race win to follow, the A-Feature went green with the Hoker Trucking No. 3s on the right of the front row.

In a ferocious battle for the win with Kyle Bronson, Shirley took the point at the white flag, but would have to settle for silver as the $12,000 check was nipped at the line by the No. 40b.

Looking ahead, the Brian Shirley is slated to compete at the 29th running of the Dirt Late Model Dream at Eldora Speedway on June 8, 9, and 10. The crown jewel weekend includes twin $12,000-to-win preliminary features on Thursday and Friday, followed by a $129,000-to-win finale on Saturday evening.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (06/05/23) – Wil Herrington enjoyed a maiden trip to the Winner’s Circle with the first-year Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series on Saturday evening at Georgia’s Cochran Motor Speedway. The triumph was worth $10,000 aboard his JCM Motorsports No. 19m Torco Advanced Lubricants / Yellow Hammer Design & Construction / XR1 Rocket Chassis / Durham Racing Engine Super Late Model.

With the win he extended his advantage atop the series standings. His win total with JCM Motorsports this season now resides at two.

We ran a Crate (Late Model) race earlier this year here, and got our butt handed to us,” Herrington laughed in Victory Lane. “Not trying to toot my own horn or anything, but I finally won in every class at Cochran Motor Speedway now. I appreciate all y’all fans for supporting me for all these years and got a win on (crewman) Tony (Floyd’s) birthday.

“This team here at JCM Motorsports is a dream come true for me. They give me top-notch equipment and a great crew around me. We’re blessed with amazing sponsors, and tonight I did my job and got us the win.”

On Saturday afternoon, Wil Herrington traveled to his home track of Cochran Motor Speedway (Cochran, Ga.) to compete with the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series.

With 27 Late Models on hand, Herrington topped the charts in qualifying, picked up the win in his heat race and earned the pole position for the 50-lap feature via the redraw.

Ryan Timms Wins Queen’s Royal Opener at SFCR
Indiana Midget Week Continues

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (06/05/23) –
Ryan Timms collected his fourth win of the season and the accompanying $5,000 winner’s check on Friday night at St. Francois County Raceway (Farmington, Mo.) aboard his CitGard Engine Oil / driveWFX.com No. 5T CITGO / Hampel Oil / Western Flyer Xpress / Mystik Lubricants / Eagle Chassis Sprint Car.

“It was a busy and fun week of racing between the Sprint Car and the Midget. I was especially bummed for the Keith Kunz Motorsports team to see our chance at winning go away with a flat tire on Thursday night at Tri-City (Speedway). We had a great weekend in the 410 c.i. Sprint Car at St. Francois County Raceway with a win on Friday night followed by a podium finish on Saturday,” Timms said. “We’ve got another busy week of racing in front of us. Thanks so much to everyone who supports our team.”

Kicking off 11 consecutive nights of racing, Ryan Timms entered his CitGard Engine Oil No. 5T Sprint Car into battle with the High Limit Sprint Car Series on Wednesday night at Tri-City Speedway (Granite City, Ill.).

With a sixth-to-fourth run in his heat race positioning him on the seventh row for the $23,023-to-win A-Main, Ryan inched forward one spot in the 35-lapper to finish 13th.

Back at the Illinois oval on Thursday aboard the Keith Kunz / Curb-Agajanian Motorsports No. 67 Midget, Timms topped the field of 21 Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series entries before placing third in his heat. Receiving the pole for the feature via the redraw, Ryan shot out to a commanding lead but suffered a flat right-rear tire on lap 27 that dropped him into the infield work area. He salvaged an 11th-place finish from the tail.

In the 410 c.i. Sprint Car ranks on Friday for the two-day Queen’s Royal at St. Francois County Raceway (Farmington, Mo.), Ryan followed up a second-place finish in his heat race with a dash victory.

Leading flag-to-flag in the 35-lap feature, Timms cruised to his fourth win of the season, which came 3.355 seconds ahead of Brian Bell with Paul Nienhiser, Blake Hahn, and Kyle Belm completing the top-five finishers. He earned a $5,000 payday.

On Saturday night, Ryan locked into the dash via his winning performance the night prior and finished seventh in it to earn the seventh-starting spot for the weekend finale.

Chasing a $10,088 payday in the Queen’s Royal finale, Ryan charged forward four positions to finish third. He followed Joe B. Miller and Steven Russell across the line.

The weekend drew to a close on Sunday with Timms competing in the USAC Indiana Midget Week opener at Tri-State Speedway (Haubstadt, Ind.). He qualified for the main event via a runner-up run in his heat before slipping to a 12th-place finish in the 30-lapper.

Hagar Becomes First Driver to Sweep USCS Series Speedweek by Winning All Six Races

Inside Line Promotions - MERIDIAN, Miss. (June 5, 2023) - Derek Hagar is now 7-for-7 as he's won each of his seven sprint car starts this season.

The impressive run marks the best winning streak he's achieved in his career and it guided him to another USCS Series Speedweek championship as he swept all six main events the last two weekends, becoming the first driver ever to win each Speedweek race.

"It was crazy," he said. "I wasn't expecting to win all six races. I was thinking two or three. Some of those tracks weren't the best tracks for me. We were able to get good track position and capitalize when it counts."

The second half of Speedweek began last Thursday at North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, Ala. Hagar won both a heat race and the dash from the outside front row to earn the pole position for the A Main.

"Whenever you get to traffic you hope to make the right moves," he said. "I stayed in the middle to bottom of the track. I was a little free coming off turn four. I felt I could hear somebody right behind me, but I wasn't really challenged for the lead. The track ended up taking some rubber. At that point I had to start racing conservative to make sure we had tires at the end."

Hagar and his team invaded Hattiesburg Speedway in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Friday. The night was another sweep as Hagar captured a heat race from the pole position, the dash from third and the main event from the pole.

"We drew good numbers all week," he said. "It's all based off passing points. Starting on the pole of the heat race, even though you win it it barely gets you into the redraw and sometimes the first one driver not making the redraw. I was nervous because that track is all about track position. We were lucky enough to get in the dash and then draw the No. 3. I was able to get the lead coming off turn two and win the dash. It was the same circumstance in the feature. I felt glued to the track the whole race. I could hear somebody to the outside of me, but I didn't have the challenge of getting slid or someone going around me. About halfway through the track started rubbering up. Then with about four laps to go a guy blew a motor and we had a red. We were pretty used up on tires. I just tried to drive it like a pavement car and keep the tires from spinning the rest of the way."

A high pill draw lined Hagar up ninth in a heat race on Saturday at Whynot Motorsports Park, but that didn't slow him as he hustled to a second-place effort. A runner-up result in the dash started Hagar on the outside of the front row in the feature.

"We had a good week of drawing pills so I guess the racing gods told us we needed to start at the back of something," he said. "I knew in 10 laps I'd have my plate full. To go from ninth to second in the heat race put us high-points driver. We drew the No. 1 for the dash and I started beside Koty Adams. I hit the moisture and started coming up. He had a hell of a run. We kind of banged wheels and he took off to win the dash. I felt like that was a benefit for me because that gave me the preferred lane going into turn one at the start of the feature.

"He was able to get the better start and in front of me. We had a restart on Lap 4 and he short slid the corner. It left me enough room to where I could drive around him. I got in the moisture up top and stood on the gas. I barely squeezed between him and the wall to take the lead. Being in traffic around halfway I noticed lapped cars were getting faster so I moved down. We had another late caution and I just tried to drive it like a pavement car again. It all worked out."

Hagar is aiming to keep his winning streak this Friday at Crowleys Ridge Raceway in Paragould, Ark., with the ASCS Mid-South Region and Saturday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark. Hagar will also pilot the McCord 305 sprint car on Friday.

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (June 5, 2023) - Fargo, North Dakota’s Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing did their best to “wow” everyone in their first-ever visit to Ogilvie Raceway in Ogilvie, Minnesota, on Saturday, June 3, not only utilizing a third-row starting position to secure their 11th top-five outcome of the season, but using the last corner to drive ahead two spots, nearly stealing second at the “Big O” Showdown line.

Schatz, ace of the Advance Auto Parts, Carquest, Ford Motor Company, Ford Performance, MadJax XSeries, Curb Records, Sage Fruit, Absolute Automation and Security, Hunt Brothers Pizza, Elliott’s Custom Trailers and Carts, No. 15 sprint car, was in the fifth position when Ogilvie’s white flag waved, eventually rocketing down the backstretch before diving into turn three to power beyond James McFadden and Gio Scelzi. Almost earning a three-for-one deal, the ten-time World of Outlaws champion drag raced Logan Schuchart to the final checkers, just missing the runner-up spot. Jason Johnson Racing’s Carson Macedo would go on to win.

“They just kind of pulled over and went, and I just went the other way,” Schatz said of his final lap rise to third. “I just struggled all race, just cannot get the balance. I just stuck so hard on the right-rear (tire). We fought it all night. We’ve kind of been fighting it the last couple nights, but we got a respectable finish out of it.”

Just one night prior at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Schatz finished eighth, rallying three positions after starting 11th on the Northern Tour grid.

With 26 races complete on the 2023 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series agenda, Schatz remains fifth in the overall driver championship standings, scoring 14 top-ten finishes to date with 11 of those occurring within the top-five. In addition, Schatz has been victorious on two occasions, sweeping an Ohio double at Attica Raceway Park and Sharon Speedway on Friday and Saturday, May 19-20.

Bayston and CJB knock out back-to-back top tens in North Dakota and Minnesota; Knoxville visit around corner

2023 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Standings: 8th | 3328 points

By Fully Injected Motorsports:

CARLISLE, Pa. (June 5, 2023) - Securing back-to-back top-ten performances with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series is an impressive statistic, for any competitor, and for Carlisle, Pennsylvania’s CJB Motorsports, that statistic was a reality, earning said back-to-back top-tens during starts at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Ogilvie Raceway in Ogilvie, Minnesota, on Friday and Saturday, June 2-3.

Bayston, ace of the TrueTimber Camo, Rothco, JRC Transportation, Nyce Crete and Landis, Ecynbro Trucking, C&S Lawn and Landscape, Kistler Engines, Highlands’ Power Sports, High Performance Lubricants, No. 5 sprint car, finished ninth in each of his top-ten outcomes, bumping his season’s top-ten total to 15.
Impressive, nonetheless, although starting seventh on the A-Main grid, Bayston’s first top-ten of the weekend at River Cities was accomplished from the back of the pack, forced to the tail after a lap four spin. The Lebanon, Indiana, native was back to a top-ten spot by halfway.

Bayston started third on Ogilvie’s A-Main lineup, earning the position after finishing third in the evening’s dash, the product of a runner-up outcome in his respective heat race.

“From this point last year until now, we’ve made substantial gains, especially in the second half of each program. But, we’re still having a hard time harnessing our qualifying efforts. I think we made a lot of gains this weekend with qualifying which helped us maintain great starting positions in each feature,” Spencer Bayston explained. “We had some tough luck on Friday night at River Cities, but battling back for a top ten creates a perfect ending. Even Saturday, we felt great all night and proved that by working our way back into a dash. We’re getting closer and closer at putting together a full evening. There are a few things that we have to clean up and we’ll be right there.”
