Bergman Sets Quick Time and Earns First Career Podium at Knoxville

Inside Line Promotions - KNOXVILLE, Iowa (April 24, 2017) - Seth Bergman produced his career-best performance at Knoxville Raceway last Saturday during the track's 64th annual season opener.

"Everything rained out so we had Knoxville as our back-up plan and we decided to head up there," he said. "I've been getting better there over the years with more track time. For me, I feel like I have no excuses but to perform well there. A big thing is that we're on Triple X chassis and I had a different feel for the track than I've had before. I credit a lot of that to the chassis and to Scott Baylor Racing Engines. He put a big powerplant under the hood and that showed as well."

Bergman opened the night by setting quick time for the first time in his career at the half-mile oval.

"I've always tried to figure out the qualifying deal," he said. "I felt like we've raced well, but haven't qualified well. On Saturday we were quickest in hot laps and I was a little anxious to see where we were going to stack up because I went out late in qualifying so I think setting quick time showed how strong of a car we had."

Bergman then charged from sixth to win a heat race following a last-lap pass.

"I started racing the track and those guys started to come to me," he said. "I got to the leader on the last lap and he was running a different line. The line I was using was a little better. I hit the bottom like I'd been doing and I beat him right at the finish line by just a bit. We had a pretty awesome night going setting quick time and going from sixth to win the heat."

The inversion lined Bergman up on the outside of the third row for the main event.

"It was a good race and we ended up third," he said. "Clint (Garner) started next to me and the bottom was a little better on the start and Ian (Madsen) started in the row in front of me. Those guys got the cars I did, but got them quicker. We were pretty equal to each other. I tried moving around on the track and when I was doing that it allowed Jamie (Ball) to get by me late in the race. I ended up getting Jamie back at the end."

Bergman's third-place result was his best-ever finish at the oval and gives him momentum entering an ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints doubleheader this Friday and Saturday at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Ala. He placed third last year during his debut at the track.

Starks Scores Second-Place Finish at Cottage Grove Prior to All Star Tripleheader

Inside Line Promotions - COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (April 24, 2017) - Trey Starks powered to a runner-up result last Saturday at Cottage Grove Speedway, where he made his season debut driving for Doug Rutz.

"The Gobrecht Motorsports team had the weekend off and I flew home so I want to thank Doug for giving me an opportunity to race in the Northwest," Starks said. "I was happy with how everything went."

Starks qualified fourth quickest before he placed fourth in a heat race at the quarter-mile oval. That lined him up on the outside of the fifth row in the 30-lap main event.

"We were inside the top five on the first lap I think," he said. "We picked a few more off. We were in second by the seventh or eighth lap. I was by the leader twice and both times the caution came out."

Starks took the lead with a pass in turns three and four with approximately a dozen laps remaining. However, a caution on the ensuing lap negated the pass.

"From about 10 laps to go on we had a caution every three laps until the end," he said. "I knew if we could have got to traffic again we'd have a good shot. Since we kept having cautions my only shot at the lead was on the restarts. I tried to be pretty aggressive, but I couldn't quite get him."

The second-place finish was the second podium of the season for Starks, who will return to the Gobrecht Motorsports team this weekend for an Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions tripleheader. The team will compete on Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa.; on Saturday at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa.; and on Sunday at Bedford Speedway in Bedford, Pa.

"We're going to hit it pretty hard with some different ideas this weekend and hopefully we'll have some luck on our side," he said. "We have a positive attitude going in and we're going to try as hard as we can to produce some results."

Wheatley Wins Heat Race and Vies for Top Five Before Crash at Cottage Grove

Inside Line Promotions - COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (April 24, 2017) - Austen Wheatley was on pace to record at least a top-10 finish last Saturday at Cottage Grove Speedway before a broken part sent him on a wild ride.

Wheatley, who was making his third start of the season for Doug Rutz, qualified seventh quickest at the quarter-mile oval before he won a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row.

"I haven't been there in a couple of years and that place has always had my number for whatever reason," Wheatley said. "I didn't feel particularly great all night, but that was more of me than the car. It was a work in progress all night."

He started the 30-lap main event on the inside of the third row.

"I backed up to ninth or so and we started making our way forward a little at a time," he said. "We were running sixth with seven laps remaining when the right front hub broke going into turn one. It dug the right front into the ground and it was like someone picked the car up and flung it."

Wheatley flipped violently before ending with a beat-up race car.

"It ripped the motor out of the car and junked the frame," he said. "I'm pretty sore. Both my knees, my neck and my right wrist are sore. We'll probably take a couple of weeks off to heal and regroup.

"I want to thank Doug for the opportunity again. It certainly didn't end the way we wanted, but everyone is safe and that's the most important thing."

QUICK RESULTS -

Sides Heading to Indiana for World of Outlaws Doubleheader This Weekend

Inside Line Promotions - BARTLETT, Tenn. (April 24, 2017) - Jason Sides is fresh following a weekend at home thanks to Mother Nature wreaking havoc on the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series last weekend.

Sides took advantage of the free time after the Bull Ring Outlaw Blitz was postponed at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., and the Spring Classic was cancelled at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo.

"It's been nice to be home," he said. "We get to be home next week, too. We got some things done that needed to be done on the truck and other things that you need to do at home that you can't while you're on the road."

Sides will return to action this Friday at Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Ind., and Saturday at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind., with the World of Outlaws.

He placed 13th last season during his debut at Plymouth Speedway. Sides has more experience at Tri-State Speedway, where he has raced each of the last 10 years. He has a career-best result of third in 2009 and has posted five top 10s during his last eight races at the quarter-mile oval.

"We've had good runs there and we've had some bad runs there," he said. "It's kind of a crapshoot. You have to qualify well. You need to be up front to be a contender because you probably won't charge from the back."

Sides enters this weekend with a top-10 streak at eight consecutive races, which is his best stretch since recording nine straight in August and September of 2010.

"I think we're headed in the right direction," he said. "We've made some small changes and it's gotten a lot better. I think we have a pretty good handle on it. We just need to keep running in the top three to get that first win of the season."

SEASON STATS -

20 races, 0 wins, 4 top fives, 11 top 10s, 11 top 15s, 14 top 20s

Thomas Jr. Wins Thriller at Lincoln Park Speedway

INDIANAPOLIS (Apr. 24, 2017) – Kevin Thomas Jr. scores a thrilling win at Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway, as he put the Pace Performance Coatings/ J&D Performance/ DRC No. 44 into victory lane for the first time since 2009.

“I’m happy to get Dan (Pace) back in victory lane again,” said Thomas. “I’m glad to be back there too, especially in a non-wing car. This only like our 6th or 7th race together, so we’re still getting it figured out. We’ve had some really good finishes, several top five’s, so it’s good to get a win this early.”

After starting 12th in the field of 22 cars, Thomas would soar around the competition on the high side, working his way up to 6th on lap 16. After picking off fellow competitors Shane Cockrum and Jarrett Andretti, Thomas would move into 4th; the caution flag would wave.

By the 15th circuit, Thomas was up to the 4th position and tracking down the leaders. Once he passed Brent Beauchamp for the 3rd, a late race caution would find Thomas back in the 4th position with 9 laps remaining.

Thomas set his sights on the leaders and took over the top spot on lap 21, fending off a hard charging Justin Grant and Brady Short. The Cullman, Alabama native would lead the final four laps to take home the trophy.

Thomas is slated to pilot the Pace machine for several races throughout the 2017 season, including the upcoming USAC National Sprint Car event at Eldora Speedway. The “Let’s Race Two” titled show is set for May 12th and 13th.

Kevin Thomas Jr. would like to thank the following sponsors; Hinchman Racing Uniforms, Bell Helmets, Gridsport, Indy Metal Finishing, DRC Chassis, High Side Design, and MPI.
