USCS WEEKEND WRAP-UP FROM BUBBA RACEWAY PARK
Double, Double Vision; Mark Smith swept USCS Winter Heat opening weekend at Bubba Raceway Park on Friday and Saturday (2/9-2/10)

Ocala, Florida - February 12, 2018 – The 70’s rock band, Foreigner must have known Mark Smith was coming to race at Bubba Raceway Park this past weekend, cause they made a song, just for the occasion way back in 1978, “Double Vision” . That was what Fans and the other race teams got last weekend at BRP was a double vision of Mark Smith in victory lane in the USCS Winter Heat Rounds One and Two. The Sunbury, Pennsylvania driver took up where he left off in United Sprint Car Series competition last November by winning rounds One and Two of the USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour presented by K&N Filters Winter Heat Series main events over this past weekend at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Florida. By doing so, Smith ran his win streak to three-in-a-row in USCS competition. All three wins have come at Bubba Raceway Park, including the USCS Florida State Championship Race final last November 11th. Smith bested a talented field of 35 drivers from 15 states and Canada and parked his own Mach 1 number 1m sprint car in the www.RockAuto.com USCS Victory Lane on both Friday and Saturday nights to kick his 2018 season off in a successful manner.

After winning Friday night’s 25-lap final, Smith raced from the K&N Filters Pole Position into victory lane while leading the entire 30-laps in the Saturday night weekend sprint car finale. Washington state driver Seth Bergman jumped from his fifth starting position into the runner-up spot on lap one and took up the chase after the fleeting Smith. Danny Martin, Jr. from Sarasota, Florida lost a spot to Jacksonville, Floridian Terry Witherspoon, but recovered to the third position on lap two. Witherspoon held down the fourth spot followed by New York racer, Larry Wight in fifth.

That running order held until in the top five until lap thirteen when A.J. Maddox from Tampa, Florida moved in to the order, while the balance of the top ten saw a lot of shuffle going on. Maddox moved into the top three on lap eighteen.

Over the last dozen laps the order behind Smith and Bergman changed several times with Coleman Gulick from Binghamton, New York racing from fourteenth place into the top five. He then advanced into third place after a lap nineteen restart.
By lap twenty-three, Carson Short, who finished in the runner-up spot behind Smith on Friday night, had charged from a sixteenth starting position into the lead group.

On lap twenty-nine the caution came out for a stopped car exiting turn two to create a two-lap green-white checker dash to the finish. This pulled Seth Bergman, Coleman Gulick, Carson Short and A.J. Maddox right up to the back bumper of the the leader, Mark Smith.

When the green flew again Smith held off Bergman and company to cross the line ahead of Bergman, Gulick, short and A.J. Maddox in that order. The second group had the evening’s Hoosier Speed Dash winner, fifteen-year-old Tyler Clem from St. Petersburg, Florida in sixth followed by Columbus, Indiana/s Tony Stewart in seventh position. Danny Martin, Jr. crossed in eighth place followed by Larry Wight in ninth place. Defending USCS National Champion, Jordon Mallett from Greenbrier, Arkansas rounded out the top ten finishers in a talent-laden field.  

Heat race victories on Saturday night went to Joe Swanson from Elma Green, Indiana in the Engler Machine and Tool First Heat and Danny Martin, Jr. in the Brown and Miller Racing Solutions Second Heat. The Butlerbuilt third heat checkers was claimed by Tony Agin from Ft. Myers, Florida. The Schoenfeld Headers fourth heat was won by Terry Witherspoon. The fifth and final FireAde heat race was won by Jordon Mallett. The Hero Graphics B-Main Number One win went to Wayne Johnson from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Carson Short won the second one. The K&N Filters Pole Award and pole position was garnered by Mark Smith after first heat winner, Joe Swanson drew a zero inversion for high points earner, Mark Smith. Carson Short earned the Wilwood Disc Brakes Hard Charger award after passing twelve cars in the main event.

PA’s Mark Smith goes two-in-a-row in USCS competition  on Friday at Bubba Raceway Park

Ocala, Florida - February 9, 2018 – Mark Smith from Sunbury, Pennsylvania took up where he left off in United Sprint Car Series competition last November by winning the Round One  USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour presented by K&N Filters Winter Heat Series main event on Friday night at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Florida. By doing so, Smith ran his win streak to two-in-a-row in USCS competition. Both wins have come at Bubba Raceway Park, including the USCS Florida State Championship Race final last November 11th. Smith bested a talented field of 35 drivers from 14 states and Canada to park his own company’s Mach 1 sprint car in the www.RockAuto.com USCS Victory Lane to in the USCS series’ 2018 season opener.

Smith started from the K&N Filters Pole Position and raced into victory at the end of the 25 laps. Carson Short from Marion, Illinois raced past the first four cars including Smith on lap one and led the first seven laps. Mark Smith got back by Short as the two approached lapped traffic on lap eight and led the balance of the race.

Snohomish, Washington driver Seth Bergman got past Caron Short into the runner-up spot on lap fifteen and took up the chase after the fleeting Smith. Bergman was able to challenge Smith several times in lapped traffic and after restarts , but, could not make a pass for the lead. On lap 23, Bergman’s shot at the win ended when he collided with Tony Agin who lost a front wheel with two laps to go. Carson Short re-gained the runner-up spot at that poit and crossed the finish line behind Smith after the re-start. Fifteen-year-old young gun Tyler Clem from St. Petersburg, Florida followed Smith and Short across the finish line in the K&N Filters Podium Award third place after starting the main-event twelve positions back from fifteenth.  

Tanner Thorson from Carson City, Nevada was doing double-duty driving a Powri Midget entry in their main event just before jumping into his USCS winged sprint car ride for this main event. Thorson was impressive while starting way back in 21st position and charging into the top five to finish fourth.

Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion, Tony Stewart from Columbus, Indiana also started deep in the field in nineteenth place on the grid. He passed fourteen cars to round out the top five drivers.

Joe Swanson from Elma Green, Indiana fiished in sixth place followed by Danny Martin, Jr. from Sarasota, Florida in seventh place. Defending USCS National Champion, Jordon Mallett from Greenbrier, Arkansas finished in eighth place after starting twenty-third. Larry Wight from Fulton, New York finished in ninth position and multi-time Powri National Midget Champion, Zach Daum from Pocahontas, Illinois rounded out the top ten finishers in a star-studded field.  

Tony Agin who finished in fifth place in the USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour 2017 National point standings kicked off the evening’s action and the 2018 USCS racing season by winning the Hoosier Tire Speed Dash.
