Drew County Speedway presents Faith Reed Memorial
Monticello, Arkansas USA
IMCA racers from throughout the southern region traveled to Drew County this weekend and braved frigid temperatures, coupled with high winds, for yet another exciting evening at the speedway. The purse was raised for all classes and racers from all over showed up to earn their piece of the winnings.
A multitude of teams from northern Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana gathered for what was a heart-warming but bittersweet evening for the family of Faith Elizabeth Reed. Faith’s memory is close to everyone’s hearts at the track, and many cars race each week in the name of her memory, including her father Chris Reed of Rison and brother, Seth Reed.
While most tracks in the area cancelled races due to cold and wet weather conditions, track owner Rodney Box was determined to continue the show in honor of the Faith Reed Memorial, presented by Foster Tractor Company, featuring Round #1 of the Ryburn Super 7 Series. More than 125 racecars filled the pits and took the track as fans bundled up with coffee to face an evening that was full of head-to-head racing and exciting crashes.
The feature event of the evening, the O’Reilly Modified Series, welcomed so many racers that qualifying was required for the class, with the top four runners from B-Main making the feature race: (#51) John Palasini of Leland , Miss, finished sixth in the feature; (#8R) Jodey Reep of El Dorado ended in 17th place following a multi-car pileup; (#88) James Harper of Monroe, La., secured an eighth place finish; and (#X) Bud Mullins of West Monroe, La., finished the feature 16th after also being involved in wreckage.
Front-runners in the modified race included (#JP5) Lee Patton of Choudrant, La., who maintained his lead over the field throughout the entire race and took the checkered, followed by (#94) Chris Shown of Hooks, Tex., who finished second; (#26L) Patrick Lynn of Little Rock (third place); (#2FAST) Tyler Stevens of Cabot; and (#D6) Chris Huckabay of Monroe, La., rounding out the top five. “We heard there was a memorial for Faith Reed and wanted to be here tonight,” Huckabay said. “It’s cold out here, but we’re happy to be here in honor of the Reed family. It was definitely worth the trip.”
Other local O'Reilly Modified Series notables who found themselves involved in wrecks during the feature included last week’s winner (#90) Jody Davidson of West Monroe, La., (#15) Grant Box of Pine Bluff, and (#B32) Brent Calhoun of Bismark.
There was light-hearted buzz in the pits that ‘guys came up to show (#6VOLT) Cody Harger how to run this track.’ Turns out, Harger showed them. The limited modified series driver added yet another DCS first place trophy to his collection last night after a high-intense race where the top six drivers showcased wicked skills and proved they were the ones to watch, in order of finishing: winner Harger; (#C8) Timothy Culp; (#B75) Waylon Ball of El Dorado; (#5X) Randy Branch of West Monroe, La.; and (#07T) Todd Abbott of Monticello..
David Nichols (#8N) of Warren led the Street Stock pack to the checkered flag, followed by another local favorite (#15) Jason Craig of Wilmar, who earned multiple wins in seasons past in the hobby stock division and is earning his way to being a top finisher this season in the Street Stock division. (#99V) Ronny Via of Pine Bluff finished in third place, rounding out the top five with (#37) Wesley Crutchfield of Sheridan and (#7) Casey Hobson of Sterlington.
Brandon Lloyd (#15) of Fountain Hill proved there would ‘beno’ match for his car in the Cruiser feature as he led the massive field across the finish line; Lloyd began the race began in third position out of the 23 cars and passed pole-sitter (#33) Clint Horn of Warren and (#83) Cecil Reed of Monticello; both cars were strong competitors in the race until wreckage took them out of contention, as well as (#10) Derek Adair of Warren, who started the race in fourth position and also had a strong run until he was caught up in wreckage with Reed and (#311) John Anthony of Dumas.
Bauxite driver Frank Oneil (#96x) won the Hobby Stock Division, immediately followed by the class’s established headliners (#225) Kenneth Harvey of Monticello; (#92) Ricky Wrinkle of Rison; and (#5M) Mandy Hayden of Monticello, all of whom have seen past wins and/or championship titles at Drew County Speedway. The hobby stock class was another division that was packed with competitors, with 18 cars taking the track to vie for the win in the feature.
If a knack for racing is hereditary, the Abbotts definitely have the genes. Todd Abbott, a strong contender in the limited modified race, later watched his younger brother, Tyler Abbott of Monticello (#314) take the checkered flag in the four-cylinder event, followed by (#11x) of Eric Moss of Watson and (#409) Megan Ellis of Monticello, one of the younger racers at the track who has won multiple championships in a variety of go-cart series across the southeastern region of the United States.
