Mallett Optimistic Following Frustrating Season-Opening ASCS National Tour Doubleheader
Inside Line Promotions - OSBORN, Mo. (May 1, 2019) - Jordon Mallett kicked off his rookie campaign with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour last week and he quickly learned his mental fortitude is going to be heavily tested this season.
"Luckily this life on the road has taught me a few things about keeping an even balance and maintaining your sanity," he said. "You can never let yourself become too invested in the bad or consumed by the good. Every day is a new race day and things can change so quickly you can't allow your mind to drift and take your confidence with it."
Adjusting to a new format, new competitors and completely new tracks is a challenge Mallett was aware would be present. He looked forward to that challenge. However, what the two time and reigning USCS Series champion did not anticipate was just how susceptible even former champions are to not make a main event during a weekend.
The season got underway last Thursday at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb. Things looked promising after hot laps when Mallett put his name near the top of the speed charts, but it unraveled in the heat race. His initial start was good, but it was called back. On the second go-around he got the car up into the wall and popped a right front tire.
The undesirable heat race result put Mallett behind the eight ball and into a rough starting spot in a B Main. He rallied from eighth to fifth place, which was two positions shy of transferring into the main event.
"It just seemed like we couldn't get anything right," he said. "It was fun to run a track so tacky and fast. We had some serious speed. It just means nothing when you put yourself that far back in the B Main."
On Friday night the team traveled to U.S. 36 Raceway, where he placed seventh in a heat race before maneuvering from 11th to eighth in the B Main.
Next up for Mallett and the ASCS National Tour are races this Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Saturday at Selinsgrove Speedway in Selinsgrove, Pa.
"The competition level out there is unmatched," he said. "That is going to be the biggest challenge this week dealing with guys who are so familiar with their tracks and so set on refusing to lose."

Hagar Captures First Win of the Season During King of the Wings Event at Jackson Motor Speedway
Inside Line Promotions - BYRAM, Miss. (May 1, 2019) - Derek Hagar won the King of the Wings event for the second year in a row last Saturday at Jackson Motor Speedway to put his first mark in the victory column this season.
While it was supposed to be a two-day show, the ASCS Mid-South Region and ASCS Gulf South Region event was consolidated to one night after Friday rained out.
"We started fourth in our heat race and ran third," Hagar said of how he started Saturday. "ASCS does passing points and we were 10th overall so we missed the feature redraw by two spots."
That lined Hagar up on the outside of the fifth row for the main event. He said his team tried some things that they normally wouldn't and it ended up working out in their favor.
"We had a couple cautions early in the race and got up to seventh pretty quick," Hagar said. "Then we had a long green flag run and we drove all the way to the lead with about eight laps to go out of 25."
With approximately six laps remaining there was a red flag. Hagar was able to get a good jump on the restart as he held onto the lead to pick up the win.
"It was a really good weekend," he said. "Coming out of that race victorious two years in a row feels pretty good. I kind of had my doubts going into the feature since we started 10th and there were a lot of good guys in front of us. I'm glad we were able to pull it off."
Hagar is scheduled to return to action this Friday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.
