(June 26, 2023) - Joey Amantea returns to Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Sprint Cars competition this Friday at Delaware International Speedway in Delmar, Del. Amantea posted a career-best third-place outing at the track last season. "We got a podium there last year during the first race," he said. "We've been pretty good whenever we've gone to both tracks in Delaware. With us getting a podium to start the year at Georgetown it was a boost. I know they're different tracks, but they race similar. We're hoping to get our first win of the season this weekend." Amantea is coming off a pair of strong nights with the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Cars during Eastern Storm. The spectacle showcased five races in six nights with a rainout in the middle. The first couple of nights ended in the B Main at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa., on June 13 and two nights later at Big Diamond Speedway in Pottsville, Pa. Things clicked on June 16 at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., where Amantea hustled from 22 nd to 14 th in the A Main. "It turns out we had a bad mag all week so the motor wouldn't turn over 8,200 rpm so we were fighting that and also a faulty part in the engine," he said. "It was certainly frustrating, especially at Grandview because we had speed before getting wrecked out. At Big Diamond we had speed, but not enough speed and I think that was due to our mag issue. "At Williams Grove we had speed when the track cleaned off so much in the feature. Those guys were spinning tires and I could keep momentum up top. That was pretty good to end up 14 th from pretty much last." Amantea ended ninth in the B Main the following night at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., before advancing from 19 th to 13 th on June 18 at Action Track USA. "We decided to bring out our backup car at Action Track to see and we were fast," he said. "I had no confidence in myself because of the bad week we had and I think that put us back a little in time trials, but in the feature we were rolling. We started 19 th and passed up to 13 th and missed hard charger by one. I think we needed just one more lap to be in the top 10. "Overall, there's a lot to complain about, but at the same time not really because it happens in racing. You can only control so much. Things didn't necessarily work out in our favor, but we were able to salvage a couple of good runs against the top non-wing drivers." (June 26, 2023) - Trey Starks endured an unfortunate ending to the Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup on Saturday at Skagit Speedway. Starks had put himself in contention to battle for the $62,000 top prize after strong outings during preliminary competition at the high-banked oval. He set quick time during qualifying out of the 40-plus drivers on Thursday before advancing from eighth to fifth place in a heat race. Starks then maneuvered from 16 th to 12 th in the A Main. "It started out great with quick time and going eighth to fifth in the heat," he said. "That gave us enough points to be the high-point driver. The feature went non-stop and we didn't quite capitalize on opportunities enough and move forward as much as we needed to make an awesome points night. We needed a couple more spots. Toward the end of the race we had a shot at a couple more, but we didn't capitalize on it. It was definitely a solid night overall." Starks timed in third quickest to open Friday's action. A broken rear end in a heat race relegated him to a DNF, but Starks rallied from 10 th to fifth in the feature. "In the heat race I made a mistake running behind a car and got into the fence off turn four, which broke the rear end for us," he said. "We still were decent enough in points to salvage a decent night. We ran up to fifth in the feature. We were running fourth there at the end and let Zeb (Wise) slip by us. Again, it was a solid points night for us. That put us sixth overall. That's the first time at Dirt Cup - at least in the 410 - I've locked into the top six, which is a big deal to lock into the pole shuffle." Starks was tied for fifth place in overall event points, earning a spot into the pole shuffle on Saturday. He won three rounds to garner the third starting spot in the main event. "I felt really good in the pole shuffle," he said. "I think those are exciting and I'm glad we got to move forward a couple of spots. That helped us out, putting us in the third starting position. "We got going early and I was running third when I made a mistake in traffic. I chose wrong and that got us into the fence a little bit, which shuffled us back to fifth. That started to cut a tire down. The tire went all the way down so I started slowing on the outside of the track. I'm not sure of what happened. Just as we were stopping outside of turn one we were hit by another car, which ended our night. That was unfortunate for us and the other competitor. That's just how it goes sometimes." Starks was credited with a 24th-place result. The previous weekend yielded a pair of second-place showings as Starks set quick time before running second in a heat race, the dash and the main event during a 360ci winged sprint car race at Skagit Speedway on June 17. The following night he timed in second quickest, ran fourth in a heat race, ended fifth in the dash and advanced to second during the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series Timber Cup feature at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash. "We had a solid weekend there," he said. "It was a good run in the 360 at Skagit. We're still looking for just a little bit more in the 360. And then it was a good run in Elma. I think if it went green to the end we'd have had something for the leader. We did a good job saving our tires and running consistent, but you can't be too down about a podium." Starks plans to return to Skagit Speedway this Saturday for a 410ci winged sprint car weekly show. He is the current points leader at the track. (June 26, 2023) - Jordon Mallett has used a strong last couple of weekends to climb to third in the ASCS National Tour championship standings. Mallett posted two podiums, four top fives and five finishes in the top six during five races throughout the Midwest. He is now riding a seven-race top-10 streak that was kicked off by a run from 21 st to fifth on May 28. "The last five shows we ran inside the top five and the only exception was a sixth," he said. "Four of the five shows we were in contention and in a position to win if the cards went our way. That's what we have been working toward all year. It's nice to see that panning out." Mallett capped last weekend with another stout rally as he hustled from 22 nd to fourth on Saturday at Caney Valley Speedway. The performance earned him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars. "I like that race track a lot and we unloaded a great race car," he said. "We qualified second and had a good run going in the heat race. We seemed a little off and we wound up hurting a motor and had a DNF. That buried us for the rest of the night. We got back to the trailer and changed power plants. We rolled back out at the tail and charged through the field. It was still disappointing. If we wouldn't have had the problem in the heat race I felt we could have won that deal. The bad luck wasn't over though. On Lap 1 of the feature the motor wasn't running right. I ran that race on seven cylinders, which was frustrating because I knew we had a car to beat even from the tail." Two nights earlier, Mallett maneuvered from 12 th to sixth at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla. That was tied for the second-most positions gained. "We were strong, qualifying quickest in our group," he said. "We made it to second in our heat race and had a restart. I was sizing up to pass for the lead, but the quick change gear blew up in the rear end so we DNFed in the heat. We rushed back to the trailer and put a new rear end for the feature. We moved forward and just ran out of laps to get a top five. I really think we just needed another lap. I wish we hadn't had that mechanical failure early on. Perseverance we really key all weekend for us." The previous weekend featured a trio of top fives, beginning on June 15 with a third-place outing at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla. "It was one I let get away, but that was my own fault," he said. "I stuck to the bottom the first lap where the track had been dominant all night. I got passed in the first lap on the top in turns three and four. I went to try to recover off the bottom. I got a really good drive and it sucked me into a yuke tire. It bent about everything on the front end and knocked the left front tire flat. I ran the last 25 laps of the feature with the left front flat and everything folded up on the steering. I held on to finish on the podium, but it was frustrating for the error on my part trying to make something happen on the bottom." Mallett posted a season-best second-place finish the following night during his debut at Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan. "It was a good night," he said. "We qualified well and heat raced okay. We started third and ran second. The cards didn't fall our way, but we were plenty fast to win that deal. We needed to get into traffic and when we finally did I was able to size the leader up. When we could make a bid for the lead the caution came out. We never did get back into traffic for the opportunity we needed." That weekend concluded on June 17 at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., where Mallett advanced from ninth to fifth. "We qualified okay and didn't heat race very good," he said. "We weren't very balanced. We got into the top five in the feature, but had a right rear tire come apart about three laps toward the end. The treads just came off the right rear. We were able to hold on. It was a nightmare those last laps as bad as it was shaking, but we were able to hang on for a top five." Mallett is facing ASCS National Tour races this Friday at Boone County Raceway in Albion, Neb., and Saturday at WaKeeney Speedway in WaKeeney, Kan. (June 26, 2023) - Kaleb Johnson highlighted the 2 nd annual BillionAuto.com Huset's High Bank Nationals presented by MENARDS by making the feature redraw during the final preliminary night. More than 50 drivers tackled the four-day World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series event at Huset's Speedway. "The week was pretty tough," Johnson said. "The first two nights we didn't fare so well, but the third night was much better. We made the show and the redraw. It didn't end how we wanted, but it's tough racing against those guys. They are so good." Qualifying woes stymied Johnson on Wednesday and Thursday as he ended in the Last Chance Showdown and C Main, respectively. "We really just couldn't get anything right on the car," he said. "We struggled finding any grip. I was just spinning the tires, which isn't very good. After those two nights we switched cars and that seemed to help. It's a car I started the year with and I couldn't get it to work well. We switched to this other car that was a little different and ended up switching back on Friday." Johnson kicked off Friday's preliminary night by qualifying sixth quickest. He then hustled from sixth to fourth place in a heat race to earn enough points to advance into the feature redraw. "We laid down a good qualifying lap," he said. "I was able to hit the bottom pretty good. I was a bit surprised we hung on for sixth quickest, but the track did go away a bit throughout qualifying. We started sixth in the heat race. I knew if I wanted a chance at the redraw I needed to pass one or two cars, which we were able to do." Johnson lined up on the outside of the third row in the main event after pulling the No. 6 during the redraw. "I was going to be happy with a top 15," he said. "I knew it'd be tough. I let some cars pass me and made the wrong lane choice a couple of times. Then we hurt an engine about 15 laps in so we were unable to finish." Johnson was credited with a 22nd-place result. "I knew we'd be buried in event points for Saturday," he said. "I had to have a good start in the qualifier to pass a couple of cars. I got squeezed into the wall taking the green. It bent the torque tube so I was lucky to hang onto sixth." Johnson placed sixth in a qualifier before ending the weekend 16 th in the Last Chance Showdown. "I knew starting that far back it'd be tough," he said. "I think we gained a position and mostly rode around back there for a while."
