Brian Brown Excited for Upcoming California Challenge With World of Outlaws

Inside Line Promotions - LAS VEGAS (March 4, 2019) - Brian Brown is looking forward to spending the next few weeks in California as the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series is visiting 'The Golden State.'

"It's one big measuring stick every time you go out," he said. "You have to prove yourself all over again whether you're at Knoxville, Tulare or Port Royal. We didn't have the best week in Las Vegas, but when you get to Tulare they don't care what you did in Las Vegas. You have to go out and get qualified and that's the first part of a four-part deal. Then you have to run good in your heat, get in the dash and run good in the A Main. You have to take it one night at a time and focus on the task at hand."

Brown will compete this Friday and Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, where he captured a career-best run of seventh in 2016.

"We're looking forward to it," he said. "It's five degrees and snowy in Missouri. Any time you can get out and race it's good. It's an exciting track for the fans and the drivers."

Brown is coming off a World of Outlaws doubleheader at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas, which hosted the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown presented by Star Nursery last Wednesday and Thursday.

"We had around 150 FVP customers and employees there on Thursday so I got to spend some time with them," he said. "There were a lot of long-time customers so it was good to get to see them again."

Brown started on a strong note by qualifying fifth quickest in his group last Wednesday. He maneuvered from third to second place in a heat race to advance into the dash. A fifth-place run lined him up on the inside of the third row for the main event.

"I felt like we had good car speed," he said. "We took off in the feature and something didn't feel right. As every yellow came out I kept getting tighter and tighter. We had a right rear tire go all the way flat. Those things happen. That's just part of it. You can't control flat tires so you have to concentrate on things you can control."

The event wrapped up on Thursday. Brown timed in 13th quickest in his group. He finished sixth in a heat race to miss a lock-in position to the A Main by only one spot before running eighth in the Last Chance Showdown.

"We hot lapped pretty well," he said. "The qualifying piece is on me. Normally in that situation you'd get one good lap in and go for the home run lap on your second lap. I chose to run the bottom in turns three and four both laps and didn't do a good job of how I should run the track. Going 13th quick is not up to our standards. Usually in those situations you can try to dig yourselves out of the hole. The way the track was with the conditions, it was laying rubber in the heats and the B Main it was pretty lane dependent, we just couldn't dig ourselves out of the hole. You'll have nights like that."

Kaeding and Sides Produce Strong Finishes in Las Vegas for Sides Motorsports

Inside Line Promotions - LAS VEGAS (March 4, 2019) - Both Tim Kaeding and Jason Sides posted top-10 results for Sides Motorsports last week during the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown presented by Star Nursery.

Kaeding picked up a runner-up result on Wednesday during the opening night of the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series doubleheader at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas before Sides netted a ninth-place run on Thursday.

"To make both shows and have one car run second and ours run in the top 10, it went well," Sides said. "In theory I'd like to see us both in the top five, but all in all it was a good weekend for us."

Kaeding qualified 11th quickest in his group before he powered from sixth to third place in a heat race on Wednesday. He capped the night by charging from 10th to second place in the main event.

"He was damn good," Sides said. "We had enough fuel to make the last four laps so I'd have liked to see it run the last few laps without a fuel stop. He had so much momentum going into the corners he could catch them going in. That'd get him off the corner as well. He seemed like he had so much more speed than the others."

Kaeding was just as strong on Thursday, timing in third quickest in his group before a third-place run in a heat lined him up on the inside of the fifth row for the A Main. He quickly rallied toward the top five, but he narrowly clipped an infield tire to end the night early.

Meanwhile Sides improved throughout both nights of action on the half-mile oval. He qualified 13th quickest in his group on Wednesday. Advancing from seventh to fifth place in a heat race locked him into the A Main. However, he pulled off the track midway through the race while struggling with the setup.

Sides' best outing came the ensuing night when he timed in fifth quickest in his group and won a heat race from third. That earned a spot into the dash and a runner-up result lined him up on the outside of the front row for the main event.

"I had a couple of decent starts, but on one or two restarts I was in the wrong lane and it slipped and let three or four cars go by," he said. "The last six or eight laps we were trying to survive. The tires were pretty bad and we needed to go out with a good finish so we were pretty conservative."

Sides salvaged a ninth-place result.

Both he and Kaeding will be in Sides Motorsports' entries this Friday and Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., with the World of Outlaws. Kaeding is tied for the most Outlaws wins at the track with four career visits to Victory Lane.

Giovanni Scelzi Earns Top-Five Finish During World of Outlaws Race in Las Vegas

Inside Line Promotions - LAS VEGAS (March 4, 2019) - Giovanni Scelzi nearly pulled off a victory during his season debut with Roth Motorsports last Wednesday at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas.

Scelzi kicked off the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown presented by Star Nursery by qualifying second quickest in his World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series group of 19 drivers. He then won a heat race and placed third in the dash to line up on the inside of the second row for the main event.

Scelzi spent most of the race in a battle for the runner-up position and he was running in that spot in the closing laps when he took the lead on a restart with only four laps remaining. However, a caution came out erasing the pass and the red flag was waved for a fuel stop.

"I asked the guys how my tires were and they said they were shot," he said. "Since it was just a fuel stop we couldn't add any air so I was trying to hang on after that. I got a bad restart and at that point you're a sitting duck. That's how it falls sometimes."

Scelzi hung on for a fifth-place finish, which was his fifth career top five with the series.

"Not knowing what to expect with different cars and different motors, starting out that strong and having a shot at winning, it couldn't have started off much better," he said. "We all got along well and the team did a really good job."

The event concluded on Thursday with Scelzi going out last in qualifying of the nearly 40 competitors. He timed in 14th quickest in his group. A charge from seventh to fifth place in a heat race locked him into the 20th starting position in the main event.

"I got up to 12th right before the rubber came in, but I was in a bad lane on a restart and made a couple of mistakes that cost us a few positions," he said. "We fell to 16th, but made it back up to 12 th in the rubber."

Scelzi's eight cars passed ranked as the third most as he earned a 12 th-place outing.

"With getting a little more experience running my brother's Schnee and running a Maxim you get to thinking a race car is all just tubing," he said. "You just have to figure out what they like. Bernie (Stuebgen) is the best crew chief. Confidence is a big thing for me. Right now I think we could build a wheel barrow and be fast with it.

"I want to thank Bernie and the crew for their hard work as well as Dennis and Teresa Roth for the opportunity."

Scelzi and Roth Motorsports are scheduled to compete this Friday and Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., with the World of Outlaws.

"Hopefully the weather holds out," he said. "That's a place I have the most laps at out of anywhere in California. Having a good Trophy Cup (last fall) and a decent showing with the Outlaws last year, I have a lot of confidence there."
