THOMAS WIRE-TO-WIRE IN NIGHT 1 FOR KING OF THE CRATE AT NORTH ALABAMA

TUSCUMBIA, AL – Jimmy Thomas of Phenix City, AL drove the Scorpion Race Cars Special to a Night 1 victory in the King of the Crate 40 for the Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series on Friday night at North Alabama Speedway. Thomas took the lead on the opening lap and went wire-to-wire for 40 caution-free laps.

“If you would have asked me earlier tonight if I thought I could win this race, I would have had my doubts, but I have to thank my Dad and my crew for giving me a fast car tonight,” Thomas said. “We might be able to find some more speed out of it for tomorrow night, but we check everything over and put it in the box. It’s good!”

Thomas showed patience in heavy lapped traffic and was able to maintain a big lead throughout the race. Thomas took a 2.549 second margin of victory over the defending King of the Crate Champion Jeremy Shaw of Millport, AL in the Bud Coley Trucking Special.

Josh Putnam of Florence, AL moved from fifth to third in the closing laps of the race in the Jippy Auto Sales Special. Putnam’s late race charge earned him the VP Racing Lubricants Slick Move of the Race Award. Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series point leader Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, GA was fourth in the 5m Construction Rocket.

Chase Walls of Decherd, TN took the fifth spot in the Powers Machine Special and Oakley Gillespie of Five Points, TN drove the White Skies Communications Special to a sixth-place finish. Bryant Marsh of Corinth, MS finished seventh in the Modern Woodmen of America Rocket and earned the Fullmoon Graphics “Lucky 7” Award.

Corey Dunn of Milledgeville, GA was eighth and the Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Race in the Georgia Timber CVR. Matt Copper of McKenzie, TN started the Ronnie Cooper Trucking Rocket 17th and finished ninth to earn the Knowles Race Parts and Bodies Hard Charger of the Race Award. Tyler Wood of Hohenwald, TN rounded out the top ten in the Quality Building Supply Special.

In preliminary action, Shaw out timed the 35 entrants in Boyd Built Fabricators Group Qualifying with a lap around North Alabama Speedway in 14.579 seconds. The two KRC Power Steering 12-lap B-Main Races were won by Wood and Oakley Johns of Hohenwald, TN in the Shoals Box and Pallet Special.

The only caution flag of the race came out on the opening tour when Ben Brocato of Muscle Shoals, AL spun the Valley Metal Fabricators Specials in turn four. That necessitated a complete restart. Thomas took the lead on the next green flag followed by Shaw, Herrington, Walls, and Gillespie.

Marsh was able to pass Gillespie for fifth on lap three, and Thomas reached the cars on the tail end of the lead lap on lap eight with a half straightaway lead over Shaw. Putnam charged up from his tenth starting spot to fifth by lap ten. While Thomas was in heavy lapped traffic, Shaw was able to close to within a few car lengths.

Once Thomas broke through the traffic, he pulled away from Shaw. At the halfway point, the top ten was Thomas, Shaw, Herrington, Walls, Putnam, Marsh, Gillespie, Dunn, Johns, and Wood.

The only close call for Thomas came on lap 27 when Parker Martin of Milledgeville, GA driving the Martin Industrial Contracting Special made contact with the leader while being lapped, but no damage was done to either car, and Thomas was able to pull away. Thomas packed his bags, turned in the key and checked out on the field with a full straightway lead with ten laps to go.
