HERRINGTON COMES HOME TO SHOW UP AND SHOW OUT WITH COCHRAN CRUSA WIN
COCHRAN, GA – Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, GA showed up and showed out at his home track Cochran Motor Speedway on Saturday night to capture his third Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series win of the season in the 5m Construction Rocket. Herrington set fast time and led all 50-laps to sweep the program.
Herrington had a rough road trip during the first two nights of the Salute To America Nationals, but all of the hardships went away when he towed to his home track Cochran Motor Speedway with a borrowed truck after his broke down in Tennessee on Friday. Herrington was upbeat despite the hauler issues in Victory Lane.
“With all of the problems we had with our truck during this road trip, I couldn’t wait to get home,” Herrington said. “This has got to be the best race car I’ve ever had, and in its first four races, we’ve got two wins, a third and fifth. I’ll take that with any new race car right out of the box, and I just feel blessed to be able to be the guy that drives it.”
Herrington took over the second spot in the Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series National point standings and closed to within 16 points of the point leader Cruz Skinner of Oxford, AL after the first seven races of the 2020 season.
Jake Rainey came on strong in the closing laps of the race to finish second in the Harrod Logging Special and earned the VP Racing Lubricants Slick Move of the Race Award for the second straight night. Corey Dunn of Milledgeville, GA took the third spot in the Georgia Timber CVR and was the Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Race.
Skinner finished fourth in the Skinner’s Body Shop Rocket and Cody Overton of Grovetown, GA drove the Midstates Equipment Rocket to a fifth-place finish. T.J. Brittain of Centre, AL was sixth in the Brittain Hauling Warrior.
Jody Knowles of Tyrone, GA started the Clayton Signs/Gentry’s Used Auto Parts Special from the 13th spot and finished seventh to earn the Knowles Race Parts and Bodies Hard Charger of the Race Award from his Cousin Jake Knowles.
Tyler Mimbs of East Dublin, GA finished eighth in the Middle Georgia Diesel Repair Special and Garrett Smith of Eatonton, GA was ninth in the Terminal Maintenance and Construction Special. Parker Martin of Milledgeville, GA rounded out the top ten in the Martin Industrial Contracting Special.
Herrington was the Boyd Built Fabricators Fast Qualifier with a lap around Cochran Motor Speedway in 14.895 seconds to earn the pole position for the $2,500-to-win main event. Herrington took the lead at the start of the race followed by Dunn, Brittain, Smith and Skinner. The pace was slowed early and often by spins and crashes in the first five laps of the race.
A lap six restart had Herrington as the leader with Dunn, Skinner, Brittain, Smith, Jordy Nipper of Macon, GA in the Scotty’s Muffler Rocket, Rainey, Overton, Mimbs and Knowles doubled up behind the leader for the Dixie-Style Double-File Restart. Herrington set sail and held a half straightway lead over Dunn by lap ten.
Herrington caught the last car on the lead lap by lap 13, and he went to the outside of Troy Dixon of Dallas, GA, who had his Granite Hauling and Grading Rocket on the inside coming off the fourth turn. Dixon drifted up in front of Herrington, who had to stab the brakes, and cross over to the inside to put Dixon a lap down.
The incident did not slow Herrington down, as he drove under the crossed flags to signal the halfway point in the race on lap 25 with a 3.5 second lead on Dunn. The fourth caution flag of the race came out on lap 36 when Nipper and Tina Johnson of Senoia, GA in the Enforcer One GRT tangled in turn four.
Dunn was able to get back in the same zip code as Herrington, and behind the top two, Skinner, Overton, Mimbs, Knowles, Rainey, Brittain, Smith and Nipper lined up for the restart in third through tenth respectively. Rainey got up on the wheel and raced up to the fourth spot. On lap 38, Rainey threw a slider on Skinner in turn three by diving to the inside and then sliding up in front of Skinner coming off the fourth turn.
A pair of late race caution flags kept the field bunched up and set up a double-file restart with four laps to go. When the green light flashed on to resume racing, Rainey threw a slider on Dunn in turn three to take over the second spot. Herrington pulled away from the field to take his third series win of the season and his second at Cochran Motor Speedway.
