Courtney Doubles Up at Four Crown Nationals – Ready for Three-Race USAC Sprint Car Set this Weekend

Lonnie Wheatley, INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 26, 2018) – Tyler Courtney continued his 2018 tear by picking off a pair of wins during Saturday night’s “Four Crown Nationals” at Rossburg, Ohio’s Eldora Speedway.

“Sunshine” ran his season win total to 13 after topping both the USAC National Midget and USAC National Sprint Car portion of the “Four Crown Nationals”.

Sitting just 17 points shy of the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car points lead, Courtney will try to move to the top spot with this weekend’s set of events that begins with the conclusion of the Kokomo Sprint Car Smackdown on Thursday night before moving on to Gas City I-69 Speedway on Friday and then Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday.

Pulling triple-duty at the “Four Crown Nationals” the USAC Midget feature was the first on the docket.

Courtney pulled off a complete sweep of the Midget portion, setting a quick time of 16.475 seconds aboard the Clauson-Marshall Racing Driven2SaveLives/Indiana Donor Network No. 7bc entry and then winning his heat race before needing just ten laps to race into the lead from the sixth starting position to capture his second USAC Midget score of the year.

“Tim and everybody at Clauson-Marshall Racing gave me one heck of a car,” Courtney exclaimed in victory lane.  “Anytime you get to win at Eldora, it’s special.  To do it during 4-Crown is even cooler.”

Shifting to the Clauson-Marshall-Newman Racing Priority Aviation No. 7bc USAC Sprint Car, Courtney made it two wins on the night by racing to his tenth series win of the year from the pole position.  Courtney snared the lead on the third round and led the rest of the way in the 30-lapper.

After timing in sixth-quick aboard the Hans Lein No. 97 USAC Silver Crown entry on Friday night, Courtney tried to round out the Saturday USAC portion of the “Four Crown Nationals” with a repeat score in Silver Crown competition only to get overturned just eight laps into the 50-lap finale.

Courtney goes into Thursday’s weather-delayed Kokomo Smackdown finale atop the point charts after topping both preliminary events last month.  Courtney will be the top seed in the “King of the Hill” pole shuffle.  Friday will mark Courtney’s first start of the year at Gas City with Saturday marking his Lawrenceburg return after taking Indiana Sprintweek honors.

Bellm Shows Speed at Hockett/McMillin Memorial – No Luck to Match

Lonnie Wheatley, NIXA, Mo. (September 26, 2018) – Kyle Bellm and the Nixa, Missouri-based No. 14k Sprint Car team certainly made their presence known at last weekend’s $10,000-to-win Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour “Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial” at Wheatland, Missouri’s Lucas Oil Speedway.

But, after a top-five run in the Thursday night opener, a broken wheel center on Saturday night ultimately derailed the Greenworks Nursery/Landscapes Awarded team’s hopes for a finish near the front.

“We were fast all weekend, we just didn’t have a whole lot of luck,” Bellm summed up.

Bellm kicked off the three-race set by working forward in the Christian County Collision Repair/Bybee Lawn Care machine from fourth to second in Thursday night heat race action and then from fourth to win his qualifying race.

Gridding the feature field in fifth, Bellm ultimately drove the PPG Automotive Finishes/Colorvision entry to a fifth-place finish to start the weekend out on a strong note.

“We went from fifth to second right away, but there was some patchy rubber from the get-go,” Bellm said of the Thursday night feature.  “I knew it would lock down and I probably got a little too timid too soon and got passed by a couple of cars.”

Friday proved more of a struggle with the VP Racing Fuels/Schure Built Suspensions/Schaeffers Racing Oil entry finishing out the night fifth in “B” Main action.

“We just plain missed it on Friday,” Bellm says.  “I ramped it off a rear bumper at the start of the heat that put us back to fifth from third.  Then we went fifth to second in the ‘B’ and I went to the top when I shouldn’t have and got passed.”

Gridding Saturday’s first last chance qualifier from the front row outside, Bellm was well on the way to securing the ninth starting position for the feature until a wheel center broke as he led the way to the white flag.

It was a broken wheel center that cost the team a potentially strong finish on the night.

“We easily had a top-ten car, it just wasn’t meant to be,” Bellm concludes.

Tentative plans call for Bellm and crew to be back in action with the ASCS Warrior Region on Friday night, October 5, at Eldon, Missouri’s Lake Ozark Speedway.

2018 Quick Stats:  30 races, 3 wins, 13 top-fives, 18 top-tens.

Up Next: Tentatively at Lake Ozark Speedway (Eldon, MO) on Friday, October 5.

Wednesday's With Wayne: Strong Weekend At Wheatland

Bryan Hulbert - WHEATLAND, Mo. (September 26, 2018) Rolling out of the 8th annual Hockett/McMillin Memorial with a trio of top-five finishes, including the season's fifth victory in Thursday's prelim A-Feature, Wayne Johnson and the Oil Medics No. 2c team had a lot to smile about this past weekend.

"It was a great weekend. Overall, I felt really good, but honestly, we came out to good to early. We just kept wrenching on the car and should have just left it alone," stated Wayne.

Leading start to finish on Thursday night, Wayne followed that with a fifth-place finish on Friday, followed by a podium run on Saturday.

"The car was really good on Thursday, then Friday we were free, then Saturday we went too far the other way and we were tight, but all in all, it was a good weekend. With the format, we were able to move around and get to the front in the Heats and Qualifiers, and that made all the difference."

Looking to this coming weekend, Wayne will be at Lawton Speedway, but it will be as a car owner as former Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour contender, Jordan Weaver, will be behind the wheel of a RaceSaver Sprint Car. One of two cars for rent this weekend, the other car is still available. Anyone interested can contact Wayne at (405) 306-5426.

"You know, I've got a couple of these cars for people to rent out when we're not on the road, and it's different from what I'm used to. I've always been the driver, so getting see the car as the owner and crew chief, it's been a fun experience. Even my crew guy, Conner "Slippy" Nelson, went out and tested one of the cars a couple weeks ago."

Wayne is also raffling off a chance to race at the Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals with the RaceSaver Sprint Cars on Saturday, October 20. From Wayne's Facebook page:

Race a 305cid Sprint Car at Devils Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas on Saturday, October 20. Enter by calling Wayne Johnson at (405) 306-5426.

* Purchase a spot for a chance to drive for $100 (only 35 spots available).
* If you race the car and do not tear up anything you'll make $500.
* We will draw the winning number at 11AM Saturday, 10/13 on Facebook live.
* Winner must have their own safety equipment to race.

Carney in the Mix Throughout at Hockett/McMillin Memorial – STN up Next

Lonnie Wheatley, EL PASO, Texas (September 26, 2018) – With a field of nearly 60 cars assembled for last weekend’s Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour “Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial” at Wheatland, Missouri’s Lucas Oil Speedway, John Carney II found himself in the mix over the course of all three nights before settling for a finish of 13th in the Saturday night finale.

“It was really good overall,” Carney said of the weekend aboard the John Carney Racing No. J2 Sprint Car.  “We made the show all three nights and had a competitive car.”

Carney will be back in action next weekend at I-30 Speedway’s 31st Annual Short Track Nationals in Little Rock, AR, on Friday and Saturday, October 5-6.

Carney opened last weekend’s three-race set at Lucas Oil Speedway by posting a runner-up finish in Thursday night heat race action and then a fifth-place qualifying race run to earn the 14th starting position for the feature.

“With the heat race and qualifying race format, every position can make quite a difference,” Carney explains.

Track conditions led Carney to the decision to make an early exit from the Thursday night feature.

“The track was taking some rubber at the end of the non-wing race and we were just single file,” Carney commented.  “I didn’t feel like I was going to be able to advance any the way the track was, so after about six laps or so I decided to pull off instead of grinding off four tires.”

Carney opened Friday’s action with a heat race win and then a fourth-place qualifying race finish to earn the seventh starting position for the feature.  An infield tire brought an early end to a potential top-five feature run.

“We had a really good car for the feature, I passed a few cars and some got reverted by cautions,” Carney recalls.  “Then I clipped an infield tire and broke a radius rod.  Just looking at the guys that we were racing with and how it played out, I think we had a top-five car easy enough.”

While the broken radius rod prevented a probable lock-in to the Saturday finale, Carney still made his way into the ninth starting position by racing to victory in his last chance qualifier.  From there, Carney went on to finish out the weekend in 13th.

“The track was actually hammer down on the top and the bottom,” Carney explains.  “The car was just a little snug.  Still, it was a strong weekend overall.”

Carney looks to Little Rock and the $10,000 Short Track Nationals winner’s share next weekend.

Next Up: 31st Annual Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, AR, on Friday and Saturday, October 5-6.

Hahn Grabs Pair Of Top-Tens During Hockett/McMillin Memorial

Bryan Hulbert - WHEATLAND, Mo. (September 26, 2018) Blake Hahn went into the 8th annual Hockett/McMillin Memorial with a full head of steam, but a broken wheel center rolling into the third turn during Hahn's opening Heat Race quickly set the team back.

"I just sat in the car in disbelief, but all we could do is thrash to get the car back together. I was just fortunate we didn't hit the wall any harder than we did. We just had to come back as best we could, and I feel like we did that for the most part on Friday and Saturday," commented Hahn, who followed his Thursday misfortune with a pair of ninth-place finishes.

Coming up one spot shy of moving on in the B-Feature, Hahn took a provisional into Thursday's program where he pulled off early for a 24th place finish. Returning Friday, Hahn earned the eighth starting spot in the A-Feature. Moving into the top-five early on, the right rear sealed over half-way through the race relegating Hahn to a ninth-place finish.

"We just messed up and didn't sipe the tire enough, but the car was fantastic otherwise."

Ending up third in a Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday, Hahn slipped back on the start and again found himself having to fight his way through a B-Feature with the team forced to use a provisional once again. Gridding the field 23rd, Blake tore through the running order for a ninth-place finish.

"If a few small things had gone our way, we would have been in contention. We drove away from Sam when he was coming up to lap us, so I know we had a car capable of winning. I think that's the most frustrating part of the whole weekend, but before we go on another track, we're going through ever wheel and swapping them out."

Taking the weekend off from the ASCS car, Blake will take on Champ Sprints at Creek County Speedway for car owner, Jerry McGehee. After that, it's the COMP Cams Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway on October 5 and 6.

The 2018 season is Blake Hahn's 16th year of racing. Starting in Jr. Sprints at the Tulsa Shootout, Hahn has progressed through the ranks with over 90 victories across Micros, Midgets, and Sprint Cars. Herrera Roars Back Into Victory Lane During Hockett/McMillin Memorial

Bryan Hulbert - WHEATLAND, Mo. (September 26, 2018) A season of work and setbacks finally paid off for Johnny Herrera and his Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 45x, as the wily veteran snapped an 80-race winless streak at Lucas Oil Speedway; winning the Friday preliminary A-Feature during the 8th annual Hockett/McMillin Memorial.

"We needed that. I knew I hadn't forgotten how to drive a Sprint Car, we just needed to keep working at it and we finally got the balance back in the car that we'd been missing," commented Herrera, whose last win came on October 14, 2016, at the Devil's Bowl Speedway.

Starting the weekend with a charging run from 19th to tenth on Thursday night, Herrera was very happy with his Morton Excavating sponsored machine considering the track had taken rubber.

"I feel like we could have been even better. If the track hadn't laid rubber, we definitely could have gotten more, but we just took that and built on it for Friday."

Gridding the field third on Friday, Herrera initially dropped back on the start before jumping top-side and working back to the front. The fourth different leader of the 25-lap affair, Herrera took the lead on Lap 19 from Colorado's Jake Bubak.

"The car was just getting better and better. At one point, I got a little tight, so I just rolled the wing forward a little bit and it took off so the car was just about perfect. With the format and the way we drew, it just worked out. I think Thursday we drew 54 and Friday we drew 53, and just past a few more cars early to set us up in the feature."

Locking into Saturday's A-Feature, Johnny ended his weekend with an eighth-place finish.

"We were good, just missed it a little bit. I had the car where we had it on Friday night thinking the track was going to go away, and it didn't so, just too tight, but overall, we had a good weekend. I owe a big thank you to everyone who supports this team. It's been a long year, so this win was for them."

Taking the weekend, Herrera will return to competition at the COMP Cams Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark. on October 5 and 6.

Bryan Hulbert - WHEATLAND, Mo. (September 26, 2018) A successful season for Sam Hafertepe, Jr. finally got a little sweeter this past weekend, as the Hills Racing Team No. 15h landed the season's first $10,000 score with Sam's second Hockett/McMillin Memorial victory in as many years.

"It felt good to win like we did. I feel like all year we've had the speed to do what we did but never actually have got it done. For whatever reason, whatever was holding us back, we've had the cars to do it, and everything finally came together on Saturday night," stated Hafertepe.

Reutzel One Step Closer to All Star Title after Four Crown Triumph!

Lonnie Wheatley, CLUTE, Texas (September 26, 2018) – Last Saturday’s Four Crown Nationals at Rossburg, Ohio’s Eldora Speedway proved to be a pivotal points night in the All Star Circuit of Champions title chase for Aaron Reutzel and the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports No. 87 Sprint Car team.

Reutzel raced to his ninth series win of the year aboard the Folkens Brothers Trucking/Dissolvalloy Downhole Revolution Triple-X in the 27-lapper to virtually clinch the series driver points championship.

“The whole race played out perfectly for us,” Reutzel said of his 11th overall win of the season.

With the triumph and just the October 6 tilt at Indiana’s Kokomo Speedway remaining on the All Star Circuit of Champions slate, Reutzel simply needs to finish 16th or better to secure the overall team title for the year.

Reutzel kicked off the All Star portion of Saturday’s Four Crown Nationals by timing in second quick and then transferring through heat race action to land a Dash starting berth.  From there, he finished fourth to earn the eighth starting position in the feature.

“I didn’t get a good jump at the start of the Dash, but I could tell that we had some good speed,” Reutzel said of Precision Catalyst/Hollywood Blasting & Coating/Beard Equipment entry.

That speed carried over to the feature event with Reutzel needing just a dozen laps to work his way into the lead before checking out on the field to post the victory.

“We got to fourth right away,” Reutzel recalls.  “Our car was so good in the middle that I could pick off a car on every restart.  There were a lot of cautions early and I picked up a spot on each restart, the race played out just right all the way.”

Reutzel and the Nattress Construction/Momentum Racing Suspensions team opened the weekend with a Friday night World of Outlaws card that preceded the Four Crown Nationals aboard Josh Baughman’s No. 17 entry.

“We were saving our stuff for the All Star points race,” Reutzel explains.

Reutzel raced his way into the feature before making an early exit.

“We tried some stuff that has been working well and some other stuff that we’ve been wanting to try,” Reutzel says.  “It was absolutely horrible.  We clipped someone and I wasn’t sure what might have been bent, so we just pulled in to play it safe.”

On the cusp of the All Star Circuit of Champions title, Reutzel and the BRM No. 87 team will take this weekend off to fully prepare for the October 6 finale at Kokomo Speedway before finishing out the season with another eight nights of World of Outlaws competition as well as California’s Trophy Cup.

2018 Quick Stats:  68 races, 11 wins, 27 top-fives, 39 top-tens.

Next Up:  All Star Circuit of Champions season finale at Kokomo (IN) Speedway on Saturday, October 6.
