Nick Hoffman Comes Up Just Short in Prairie Dirt Classic Victory Bid
WoO Competition Resumes Monday at Wilmot Raceway
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (07/29/24) – The dramatic finish may not have ended how he wanted, but Nick Hoffman put on an impressive performance on Saturday night at Fairbury Speedway for the 14th annual Prairie Dirt Classic aboard his aboard his Tye Twarog Racing / NOS Energy Drink No. 9 C&W Trucking / Longhorn Chassis / Clements Racing Engine Super Late Model.
After leading laps 21-99, the Mooresville, N.C., native surrendered the point to Bobby Pierce on the final lap, relegating him to second in the 100-lap thriller.
“It was pretty good there for the (78) laps that I led,” Hoffman said. “I don’t know what I could’ve done different on the final lap. You don’t know if you’ll get this opportunity ever again to win one of these races. To be from Illinois, this race means so much to me. Man, it just sucks. Nobody remembers who ran second last year or whatever the case may be. To lose it on the last lap is really heartbreaking for me.”
Despite the second-place finish in the finale, Hoffman earned a $20,000 paycheck for the runner-up honors and an additional $39,000 for leading 78 circuits.
Nick Hoffman's pursuit for his first Prairie Dirt Classic victory kicked off on Wednesday at Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway with the Castrol FloRacing Night in America-sanctioned One for the Road.
Amassing 65 Late Models, Hoffman topped the overall speed charts in time trials with a 12.683-second lap before racing into the A-Main with a consolation victory. With a $20,000 payday up for grabs in the 50-lap feature, Nick was an early retiree on lap 18.
After a scheduled off day on Thursday, Nick returned to the Illinois oval on Friday as the 14th annual Prairie Dirt Classic weekend drew a stout field of 78 World of Outlaws (WoO) Case Late Model Series entries. With preliminaries on Friday setting the grid for Saturday's main event, Hoffman followed up the ninth-fastest lap in his time trial group with a fifth-to-second run in his 25-lap prelim.
Locked into the eighth-starting position for Saturday night's $50,000-to-win Prairie Dirt Classic, Hoffman overtook Brandon Sheppard for the lead on lap 21 and looked to have the race locked up as he set the pace for the ensuing 78 laps. After a lap-95 caution reset the field, Nick lost the top spot to Bobby Pierce on the final lap, relegating him to a disappointing second-place finish.
With a $500 bonus for each lap led, Hoffman earned a $59,500 payday for his runner-up finish and leading 78 laps.
Nick is currently 26 points behind Brandon Sheppard for the lead in the latest World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series point standings.
Earlier in the week on Monday, Hoffman turned in a fourth-place finish in the XR Super Series-sanctioned Davenport Deal at Davenport (IA) Speedway. Tuesday's finale fell to inclement weather.

Friday and Saturday’s programs include complete $6,000-to-win events, while Saturday’s finale posts a $50,000 winner’s check.

Ricky Thornton Jr. Surges to $20,000 One For the Road Victory
Cedar Lake Speedway’s USA Nationals Up Next
Mount Airy, N.C. (07/29/24) – Ricky Thornton Jr. made a triumphant debut about the Lionel Racing / Bilstein No. 20RT Kevin Rumley Racing / Senior Life Insurance Company / D&E Marine / Longhorn Race Car / Cornett Racing Engine Super Late Model on Wednesday night at Fairbury Speedway.
Beginning a two-week run with the team, Thornton Jr. surged from the 15th-starting spot to claim the $20,000 top prize in Castrol FloRacing Night in America’s One For the Road event presented by I-Beam Sliding Doors.
“I was running around the bottom and then we had a restart and (Tim McCreadie) actually picked the top and drove through the middle and passed like three or four cars,” Thornton Jr. said. “I felt like I could move out (off the bottom) just a little bit and really just get above the hole and there was a lot of traction there from everyone digging it out. I thought I was going over (when he bicycled in turn two on lap-41) — it got up and I turned right, I’m like, ‘Don’t turn too hard, cause then you’re really gonna hurt when you land,' so I just tried to get (the car) back down and get my momentum going again.
I found a way around (Shannon) Babb coming to the white flag, and we got the win. Man, it was fun night and a great way to start this race swing with Kevin Rumley and his team.”
Ricky Thornton Jr. teamed up with Kevin Rumley on Wednesday as the rescheduled One for the Road presented by I-Beam Sliding Doors event kicked off the 34th annual Prairie Dirt Classic weekend at Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway.
Against a stout field of 65 Castrol FloRacing Night in America presented by Kubota entries, Thornton's third-place heat outing pinned him on the eighth row for the A-Main.
Making an impressive move to the front, Ricky charged on the bottom to overtake Shannon Babb for the lead on lap 48 and led the final to two circuits to capture his 21st win of the season and the $20,000 top prize. He finished 0.111 seconds ahead of Babb with Ryan Gustin joining the podium.
Back at the Illinois oval on Friday for the World of Outlaws (WoO) Case Late Model Series-sanctioned Prairie Dirt Classic, Ricky followed up the 26th-fastest qualifying effort with a 13th-to-6th showing in his 25-lap showdown feature.
Relegated into a B-Main on Saturday, Thornton raced into the $50,000-to-win Prairie Dirt Classic with a second-place finish in his consolation race. Taking the green in 21st, Ricky wheeled into the top-10 by lap 60 and climbed to third on lap 78. After passing Mike Marlar for second on lap 78, Thornton suffered a broken driveshaft on lap 90 while hunting down pacesetter Nick Hoffman that brought a disappointing end to his weekend.
Ricky holds a nine-point advantage atop the latest Castrol FloRacing Night in America point standings.

With Monday night’s World of Outlaws (WoO) Case Late Model Series event at Wilmot (Wisc.) Raceway falling victim to rain, the team now turns it’s attention to the 2024 edition of the USA Nationals at Cedar Lake Speedway (New Richmond, Wisc.) this weekend. The World of Outlaws (WoO) Case Late Model Series weekend opens with complete $6,000-to-win programs on Thursday and Friday, followed by a $50,000-to-win finale on Saturday.

Tim McCreadie Sees Prairie Dirt Classic Win Chances Dashed by Late-Race Bad Luck
37th annual USA Nationals this Weekend at Cedar Lake Speedway
SHINNSTON, W.Va. (07/30/24) – Tim McCreadie and Rocket1 Racing were in contention for a victory in Saturday night’s Prairie Dirt Classic finale at Fairbury Speedway with their Valvoline / Seubert Calf Ranches No. 1 Rocket1 Racing / Ace Metal Works / XR1 Rocket Chassis / Durham Racing Engine Super Late Model.
Unfortunately luck would not be on McCreadie’s side as damage late in the race vanquished his chances of a second Prairie Dirt Classic crown. The event capped a busy week for Rocket1 Racing.
An action packed week of racing kicked off for Rocket1 Racing and Tim McCreadie on Monday with a visit to Davenport (Iowa) Speedway for the XR Super Series-sanctioned Davenport Deal.
Racing into the opener with a fifth-to-second run in his B-Main after pulling off early in his heat race, McCreadie marched forward 14 spots in the 40-lap affair to register a sixth-place finish.
With Tuesday’s Davenport Deal falling to Mother Nature, Tim headed to Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway on Wednesday to compete in the Castrol FloRacing Night in America-sanctioned One for the Road. Pinned on the eighth row for the $20,000-to-win A-Main via a third-place finish, McCreadie passed 10 cars to bring home a seventh-place finish.
On Friday as the World of Outlaws (WoO) Case Late Model Series invaded for the 34th annual Prairie Dirt Classic weekend, McCreadie followed up the second-fastest effort in his 39-car group in time trials with a third-place finish in his 25-lap showdown feature.
Locked into the 10th-starting position for Saturday night’s $50,000-to-win Prairie Dirt Classic, Tim’s strong run early was spoiled after nearly getting spun around by another competitor. He led lap 31 before battling mechanical issues from contact late in the race. After ducking into the pits, McCreadie rejoined the tail of the field and rebounded to finish 18th at the checkers in the 100-lapper.

Collects Over $20,000 for Pair of Victories
MOORESBURG, Tenn. (07/30/24) – Dale McDowell doubled down in Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series Victory Lane last weekend with his Shane McDowell Racing / E-Z-GO No. 17m Cometic Gaskets / Klotz Synthetic Lubricants / Connected Strategy Advisors / Team Zero Race Cars / Clements Racing Engine Super Late Model.
McDowell claimed the $10,053 top prize on Friday night at North Georgia Speedway before racing to the $20,053 winner’s check on Saturday at Tazewell Speedway as his win total on the year grew to seven.
Shane McDowell Racing and Dale McDowell returned to the road with the Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals on Friday evening with a trip to North Georgia Speedway (Chatsworth, Ga.), seeking their third straight victory with the miniseries.
Outrunning fast qualifier and pole-starting Donald McIntosh in the 53-lap feature, McDowell soared into the lead on the opening lap and never looked back, capturing his sixth win of the season and the $10,053 top prize.
For the Ray Varner Ford 75 on Saturday at Tazewell (TN) Speedway, Dale’s third-place heat race finish positioned him on the fourth row for the main event. Wasting no time working his way forward, McDowell charged into second by lap 24 and overtook Mike Benedum for the lead on lap 52. He paced the remainder of the 75-lap affair to secure his second win in as many nights and the $20,053 winner’s payday.
"Normally when you start (further) back here, you're in trouble. And there's an awful lot of good talent here, and just good racers," McDowell said in Victory Lane on Saturday night. "You look up through there and, you know, when I was starting seventh, I was really like, 'Man, I'm not gonna be able to drive up through there.' So it just worked out where we could maneuver around, and we got the win.
We had a great car all weekend and its awesome to get two wins to show for our efforts. A big thank you to Shane McDowell Racing, and everyone, who supports us as we go up-and-down the road."
The win marked the 17th of his career with the Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals.
