McDowell Tops McIntosh for Schaeffer’s Iron-Man Classic Win at Smoky Mountain Speedway

By Michael Despain

MARYVILLE, TENNESSEE (August 8, 2020)–The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series presented by DirtonDirt.com would conclude its weekend of racing action with the 16th Annual Iron-Man Classic at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN and Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, GA would claim the $5,000 payday after a late-race battle with Donald McIntosh that would provide some great racing for the fans in attendance for the event.

The win for McDowell would be his first career win with the series and would aboard the Shane McDowell Racing owned Sweet-Bloomquist Race Cars, Clements Race Engines powered machine that carries sponsorship from E-Z-GO, Kinzer Drilling Company, Quality Natural Gas, New Era Industrial, Klotz Lubricants, Cometic Gaskets, and Spring-Pro.

Polesitter Donald McIntosh would take the lead at the drop of the green flag for the forty lap affair, with Cory Hedgecock and Pearson Lee Williams going second and third, while seventh place starting Dale McDowell charging to fourth on the opening lap.  McDowell would drive past Williams for third on lap two, while Williams night would end one circuit later on lap three after contact with the outside retaining wall in turn two.  McIntosh would control the restart, with Hedgecock, McDowell, Dakotah Knuckles, and Tommy Kerr now giving chase.  McIntosh would stretch his lead out to a comfortable margin as he began working slower traffic on lap eleven, while Knuckles, Kerr, and Ryan King would have an entertaining battle for fourth.  As the race reached the halfway mark, King would finally take fifth away from Kerr.  Meanwhile, McDowell and Hedgecock would begin to battle for second and would actually close in on McIntosh, with McDowell taking the second position from Hedgecock on lap twenty-five.  McDowell would quickly get to McIntosh from the inside line he was using in turns one and two and McDowell would scoot past McIntosh heading to turn three on lap twenty-seven, with McIntosh attempting to slide back past McDowell, with the pair making contact and both machines almost spinning around, but both drivers held on, with McDowell leading that lap before Hedgecock would dive between the lead pair in turn one to momentarily take the lead, but McIntosh would reclaim the lead down the backstretch.  McDowell would also get back around Hedgecock and set his sights on McIntosh once again with the duo battle side-by-side for the lead on lap thirty-four before McDowell made what would be the winning pass on lap thirty-five and would pull away for the win.  McIntosh would hold off a hard-charging Hedgecock over the final two laps to finish second, Hedgecock third, while King and Knuckles would complete the top five.  The remainder of the top ten finishers would be Robby Moses, Tommy Kerr, Riley Hickman, Michael Chilton, and Joey Standridge.

The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series presented by DirtonDirt.com next event will be Saturday August 29 at Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, KY for the Harold Hardgrove Memorial, paying $10,022-to-win.
