Michael Chilton and Cole Falloway Share Iron-Man Paydays at Ponderosa Speedway

By Michael Despain

JUNCTION CITY, KENTUCKY (September 18, 2020)– The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series presented by DirtonDirt.com would kick off the Battle of the Bluegrass weekend on Friday evening at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY and Michael Chilton of Salvisa, KY would claim the $5,000 payday for his second consecutive win on the tour.  The Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series would also be in action at the Battle of the Bluegrass weekend opener and Cole Falloway of Owensboro, KY would claim his second consecutive Open Wheel tour win and score the $1,200 payday.

The win by Chilton would be his second of the season with the tour and would be his third career series victory for the 34-year old racer.  Chilton would drive his Rocket Chassis, Bullock Race Engines powered MKC Transport, Caton Industrial Painting, Parkview Home Center, Dial Painting, Budda Bert Transmissions Sales and Service, Irvin Enterprises, and Brucebilt Performance sponsored machine to the win.

The victory for Falloway would be his second career win with the series and would see the 17-year old fourth-generation racer take the victory in an Elite Chassis powered by a Mullins Race Engine that carries sponsorship from Perfection Lawn Care, Falloway’s Auto Sales, Rice Contracting, Don Adams Towing, Win Supply, and Sweetwater Pools and Outdoor Living.

Michael Chilton would jump to the lead at the start of the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Late Model Series main event, with Tommy Bailey, Devin Gilpin, Ryan King, and Chris Combs giving chase.  Chilton would set a torrid pace out front and would begin lapping slower traffic by lap seven.  By lap ten, Gilpin would begin to pressure Bailey for the second position and Scott Bloomquist would begin to challenge Chris Combs for the fifth position on lap twelve.  Bloomquist would work past Combs for the fifth spot on lap sixteen, with the first caution of the event flying one circuit later when Daniel Shelton would slow at the top of turn four.  The restart would see Gilpin sneak past Bailey for second, while Bloomquist would get by King for fourth.  Jerry Gibson III would draw the next caution when he spun in turn two on lap eighteen.  Chilton would get a great restart, with Bailey reclaiming the runner-up slot Gilpin, only to see Gilpin reclaim the spot one tour later on lap nineteen.  With Chilton once again motoring away from the field, Bloomquist would duck beneath Bailey for the third position on lap twenty-one.  Chilton’s lead at the point slowly continued to grow until the final caution waved on lap twenty-nine after Parker Martin slowed after contact with the outside retaining wall in turn four and during this caution, fourth-place running Bailey would pull to the work with a flat right-rear tire, but would change it and continue.  Chilton would once again get an excellent restart, with Bloomquist taking the second position away from Gilpin, with Jason Welshan working around King for the fourth spot.  Chilton would maintain a comfortable advantage the remainder of the way and claim the victory over Bloomquist, Gilpin, Welshan, and King.  The remainder of the top ten finishers would be Combs, Bailey, Robby Hensley, Clay Coghlan, and Eddie King, Jr.

The Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series feature event would see Brandon Kinzer take the lead at the start, with Blake Brown, Cole Falloway, J.T. Ayers, and Jimmy Payne in pursuit.  After a three-wide battle for the lead on lap three, Falloway would take second away from Brown and on lap seven, Falloway’s charge would continue as he would grab the lead away from Kinzer, while Jeff Hamby begin to pressure Payne for the fifth position.  The only caution that would slow the action would appear on lap fourteen when Travis Johnson would spin his entry in turn two.  Falloway would lead the field back to action and slowly begin to pull away from second place Kinzer and third place Brown, while J.T. Ayers would challenge Brown for the fourth spot.  Payne and Hamby would renew their battle for fifth, with Hamby snagging the position on lap eighteen.  Falloway would continue to motor away from the field in the final laps to claim with win, with Kinzer, Brown, Ayers, and Hamby completing the top five.  The remainder of the top ten finishers would be Payne, Brian Nantz, Jimmy Dalton, Wayne James, and Matt Holcomb.

The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series next event will be Saturday September 19 at Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, KY to conclude the Battle of the Bluegrass doubleheader weekend, paying $5,000 to win.  The Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series next event will also be Saturday September 19 at Lake Cumberland Speedway, paying $1,200 to win.
