Kaeding Hustles Sides Motorsports Ride to Podium at Stockton Dirt Track

Inside Line Promotions - STOCKTON, Calif. (March 18, 2019) - Sides Motorsports registered its second podium finish of the season on Saturday during the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown at Stockton Dirt Track.

Tim Kaeding qualified 17th quickest before he gained a spot to finish fourth in a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series heat race. That lined him up on the inside of the seventh row for the main event.

"Within the first few laps he was up to seventh or eighth and kept picking his way through there," team owner Jason Sides said. "He was really good passing cars by going wherever they weren't. Once he got to the front it was a little less chaotic. I think at one point he was up to second before finishing third."

Kaeding's third-place outing was the team's best finish since placing second last month in Las Vegas. The strong performance came on the heels of a disappointing ending to a stout night the previous evening at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., during the Silver Dollar Shootout presented by Reibes NAPA Auto Parts.

Kaeding timed in second quickest in his group's qualifying round. He then won a heat race before picking up a position to place third in the dash.

"It was a pretty good night going all the way until someone went in there and hit him early in the A Main," Sides said. "It didn't hurt anything but the top wing. We got him back out there. We had some brake issues early in the night. He was having to ride the brakes to keep them pumped up. He got back up to 14th after restarting at the back. One lap going down the backstretch he wasn't able to ride the brakes. He got into the dust and then didn't have any brakes. He went up and over and that was enough. It wasn't worth going back out there and restarting at the back without good brakes."

Sides' weekend wasn't as fun as qualifying got him behind the eight ball and he elected not to start feature events on the tricky tracks.

Both Sides and Kaeding will be back in World of Outlaws action this Friday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., during the Ocean Outlaw Showdown and Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., during the 49er Gold Rush Classic presented by Riebes NAPA Auto Parts.

Dominic Scelzi Posts Top-Five Finish With World of Outlaws for Fourth Straight Season

Inside Line Promotions - STOCKTON, Calif. (March 18, 2019) - Dominic Scelzi scored his first top-five finish of the season with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series last Friday at Silver Dollar Speedway.

The fifth-place run during the Silver Dollar Shootout presented by Reibes NAPA Auto Parts at the bullring in Chico, Calif., gives Scelzi at least one top-five result with 'The Greatest Show on Dirt' for four consecutive seasons.

"That's a cool stat," he said. "I hope starting in 2019 that's going to be a win for the next four seasons."

The night began with Scelzi qualifying 11th quickest in his group. He then rallied from sixth to fourth place in a heat race to lock into the 14th starting position for the main event.

"It was a little different than that track usually is," he said. "It was slick below the cushion, but had quite a bit of grip on it. We made some changes and I felt better in the heat. We made small changes all night and the car felt great in the main event. Every single lap I got better and better. I tried to throw a bomb on Ian Madsen for third on the last lap. I hit the cushion wrong, it biked me up and we lost a spot to fall to fifth. To be able to fight for third from 14th, you have to be happy about that."

Scelzi's fifth-place finish was his sixth career top five with the World of Outlaws.

The momentum continued on Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track during the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown. Scelzi timed in eighth quickest overall and finished second in a heat race to earn a spot into the dash. He gained a position to place third in the dash and that lined him up on the inside of the second row for the A Main.

"At the end of the dash I made a lot of speed running the top so I thought if I could get rolling up there I'd be in great shape during the main event," he said. "I got my right rear off the color change and it was like dust. I spun out so quick there was no way I was going to save it. You had to enter high and diamond off the corner. I got in there too hot and had the car sideways and it just took off on me."

Scelzi rallied back from the early spin by driving into the top 20 before he exited the track midway through the race.

"I didn't sleep an ounce Saturday night," he said. "You just hope it doesn't rain out the next weekend. I'm sick to my stomach. All I can do is come back and make sure I do a hell of a job next weekend."

Scelzi is slated to compete with the Outlaws this Friday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., during the Ocean Outlaw Showdown and Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., during the 49er Gold Rush Classic presented by Riebes NAPA Auto Parts.

Chase Johnson Victorious on Sixth Anniversary of Tragedy

Inside Line Promotions - BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (March 18, 2019) - The last half dozen years have been extremely trying for Chase Johnson, who has climbed from the depths of depression following an unimaginable crash that took the lives of his cousin, Marcus Johnson, and Dale Wondergem Jr.

Johnson rediscovered his passion for racing and with it his zest for life by strapping back into a race car months after the 2013 crash. His mission has been to honor his cousin and Wondergem Jr. at each race.

Last Saturday marked the sixth anniversary of the horrible crash and it was the first time Johnson has competed on the same day as that fateful event.

"Every time I race it's in memory of Marcus and Dale," he said. "Saturday was the first time I've raced on the anniversary. You have a lot of different emotions running through you on a night like that and I did my best to keep my emotions in check and to focus."

Johnson did more than that as he won a heat race before powering from sixth to capture his second career non-wing sprint car feature triumph during a USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series event at Bakersfield Speedway.

"To win made it even more special of a day," he said. "I'm really glad it ended up like that.

"We got to fourth pretty quick after a good start. Then I picked them off one by one. We had a lot of yellows and red flags. There weren't long green-flag runs. I made most of my passes on restarts. I got to the lead faster than I expected. I think we took the lead on Lap 7. The rest of the race I was running up top and I had a couple of guys poke their nose underneath. I had to move my line around to protect the lead and adjust to how the track transitioned."

The win capped a stellar weekend for Johnson, who did double duty by racing in both his non-wing sprint car as well as a midget for Morris Motorsports the previous night at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, Calif.

Johnson qualified second, advanced from fourth to second in a heat race and finished second in the non-wing sprint car A Main.

"I thought we were going to be in pretty good shape," he said. "We got the early lead and led the first two laps. Then we went into turns one and two and the car biked up pretty bad. We let two cars go by us. That was a big bummer. I tried to recover the best I could. I'm still happy with running second, but it would have been better to win in both cars."

Johnson was victorious in the midget feature. He opened the competition by qualifying second quickest before charging from fifth to second in a heat race. Johnson lined up on the outside of the second row for the main event and he took the top spot midway through the race before pulling away for his second career midget triumph.

"It was a great weekend overall," he said. "This was a weekend when we first put the schedule together we wanted to take advantage of a lot of racing in the same city. I'm really glad we were able to get the win for Del (Morris) in the midget. I was bummed running second in the sprint car because I felt like we had a car that could win, but the next night we were just as fast if not faster and we were able to put the whole night together."

Johnson is scheduled to return to action this Friday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., during the Ocean Outlaw Showdown and Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., during the 49er Gold Rush Classic presented by Riebes NAPA Auto Parts with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wheatland, Missouri (March 19, 2019) -While the 2018 Lucas Oil MLRA tour served up a bit of a learning curve for Mitch McGrath, it also put a fire into the team that they look to bring back to the series in 2019.

McGrath ended his MLRA rookie campaign an impressive 6th in the championship battle and 2nd in one of the deepest Sunoco Race Fuels Rookie battles in recent history, despite missing two of the final four races due to a scheduling conflict and motor issues.

Heading into his rookie campaign, McGrath had spent the majority of his racing career running local tracks and regional series near his Waukesha, WI home-primarily with great success. The MLRA series offered up a big challenge for the small family race team in 2018. "I was a little psyched out at first, but after doing it, it was like okay we can do this. We didn't run as well as we wanted to and we were hoping to win some races, but for the first year it was still good," said McGrath.

Prior to 2018 McGrath had piloted one of the family's Wild Chassis before making the move to Rocket Chassis for the rookie campaign. McGrath commented, "Last year the Rocket was new to us, so now we have a year under our belt with the Rockets, and we should be able to start off 2018 closer to where we need to be. Really it was all a learning curve for us, from the travel to how the races were set-up, but we just kept learning together."

McGrath was able to get on a strong roll in the mid-portion of the MLRA season, recording eight top 10's in a nine race stretch, including a podium finish on the Davenport Speedway's quarter-mile.

Benefiting from the MLRA's stiff competition level, he recorded a trio of feature wins a year ago in his home states, "Dirt King's Tour". "Running with the MLRA helped us a lot last year. When we came back home and raced locally we were faster," stated McGrath.

Being the lone driver from the Badger state following the MLRA, which will make stops in six states in 2019, McGrath acknowledges he is fortunate to have a supportive family along for the tour ride and backing him in the shop. "Having the family support is awesome, and it's the main reason I can do the tour (MLRA). I wouldn't be doing this if they weren't game for traveling up and down the road. I've got to thank them the most for doing it and enjoying it, we all have fun doing it and that makes it fun."

One of those rolling up and down the road weekly with team 74 is Mitch's son, Tucker. The youngster recently got his own start in the go-kart ranks, another family affair shared at the Beaver Dam Raceway each Tuesday night during the summer.

When it comes to the big cars McGrath notes of his son, "You wouldn't believe he is only 10 years old. You just can't imagine how helpful a 10 year old can be at the race track when it's just the four of us."

For 2019, the team has purchased a new Rocket Chassis XR1 from local dealer Mike Mataragas Enterprises, and once again will be powered by Pro Power Racing Engines. Approaching his sophomore season with the MLRA McGrath said, "We want to have good consistent finishes and if we are going to follow the tour we want to end up good in the points. Honestly, I 'm shooting to knock off a few wins this year."

One date circled on his MLRA schedule will come on June 14th, when the series makes its first ever stop in the state of Wisconsin at the Beaver Dam Raceway. Having logged many laps around the 1/3-mile dirt facility McGrath is excited to see the new addition to the schedule that will likely have him tabbed as one of the early favorites.

While excited seeing a stop on the schedule in his own back yard, he acknowledges that the travels of the road and expenses it presents makes it challenging financially, especially with a number of long distance trips to MO and OK on the MLRA schedule.

"It was unfortunate that we lost one of our primary sponsors this year due to an upcoming retirement, but we did pick up one new one so far and have received some great help from our other sponsors in getting the new car together."

McGrath currently operates out of a single car hauler, something that he would like to change to provide a safety net when hundreds of miles from home chasing points with the MLRA. In order for that to happen he knows it will take additional sponsorship's, something he is constantly pursuing.

THE # 74 TEAM--Car chief Mike Roszina helps lead the efforts in the shop during the week, while the McGrath family provides assistance on race day. Parents Joe & Robin McGrath, along with Mitch's wife Paige and son Tucker fulfill the pit crew duties.
