Hagar Caps Vankor Texas Sprint Car Nationals With Top-10 Finish

Inside Line Promotions - FORT WORTH, Texas (April 11, 2018) - Derek Hagar wrapped up the Tony Stewart Presents the Vankor Texas Sprint Car Nationals by earning a top-10 result last Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway.

It was a great finish to the weekend for Hagar, who made his debut driving for Bruce Griffith during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com doubleheader, after Friday's opening round got off to a rocky start.

"We had a vibration in hot laps," he said. "We thought it might be an unbalanced wheel. We balanced all the wheels and thought we solved the problem. It was vibrating so bad in the heat I couldn't feel the steering wheel going into the corner. We found some slack in the u-joint before the B Main, but we didn't have time to change it and it broke."

Hagar advanced from seventh to fifth place in a heat race before he was unable to finish the consolation race.

"We got the car repaired and had a lot better result on Saturday," he said. "The car felt great in hot laps. Then we got to second on the start of the heat and was catching Brady Bacon for the lead."

Hagar finished second in a heat race to lock into the eighth starting position for the 30-lap A Main.

"We gained a couple of spots and fell back a couple of spots," he said. "We hung in there for an eighth-place finish, which wasn't too bad being in a new car for me. Everything worked out for us. It was a big plus to run that well, especially with the caliber of cars that were there."

Hagar's eighth-place result was his third top 10 of the season.

"I want to thank Bruce Griffith and Ricky Tankersley for the opportunity," he said. "It was a fun weekend."

Hagar is scheduled to compete this Friday and Saturday at Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, Miss., for the King of the Wings III event with the ASCS Gulf South Region and ASCS Mid-South Region. He won at the track each season from 2014-16 and he has earned at least one podium there for five straight years.

"I'm really looking forward to going to that track," he said. "We have some good notes there. I'm excited to see how things play out."

Mallett Captures Top Fives During Two Wild Weekends of Competition

Inside Line Promotions - GASTONIA, N.C. (April 11, 2018) - Jordon Mallett has had an eventful last two weeks of racing.

It all began on March 31 when he tackled a local sprint car show at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark.

"We were running late already, but then we got ready to load the car and the ramp door wouldn't come down," he said. "By the time we got that issue resolved we showed up after they'd run heat races and everything. We didn't get there until about 30 minutes before the feature. We started at the tail of the field and came up to fourth. We had a car that could have won, but we ran out of laps."

The charge from 20th to fourth marked Mallett's second top five of the season and the oddness of that night was surpassed last Friday at Carolina Speedway, which hosted a USCS Series event.

"We had high expectations," he said. "That's one of my favorite tracks. With weather coming in they didn't prep the track like normal. It was dusty in hot laps and that continued throughout the night. It was so dusty I couldn't see the nose wing on the car."

Mallett won a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. That lined him up on the inside of the second row for the main event.

"We had an awesome start," he said. "We were leading before the flag stand. Everything was great. We came flying down the backstretch and into the corner. The next thing I knew they were yelling on the RACEiver that we had to stop. All the cars had piled up in turn four and the track was blocked from one side to the other."

The race resumed and Mallett didn't get as good of a start the second time.

"We got shuffled and fell to fifth," he said. "That's where we rode the whole race. It was a survival deal."

Mallett ended with a fifth-place finish.

Saturday's USCS Series event at Lancaster Speedway in Lancaster, S.C., rained out.

Mallett, who continues to lead the USCS Series National championship standings, will return to action this Friday and Saturday at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla.

"We feel good about it," he said. "We have a solid notebook from when we were there earlier this year."

Sides Eager for Midwest Races at Jacksonville and Tri-State This Weekend

Inside Line Promotions - QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (April 11, 2018) - Jason Sides is back in the Midwest and he's hopeful Mother Nature will cooperate.

Sides is scheduled to compete this Friday at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill., and Saturday at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind., with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. However, seven of the 16 scheduled shows this season have been rained out for 'The Greatest Show on Dirt.'

"Hopefully we can have some good weather and can get some racing in," he said. "We've only got to race four times in the last six weeks."

Sides has been consistent at both tracks on this weekend's radar. He posted an eighth-place result at Jacksonville Speedway in 2014 during the series debut before placing 11th in 2016. Sides has earned a top-10 finish during three of the last six races at Tri-State Speedway.

"Just like at most tracks our night will be dictated by qualifying," he said. "If we qualify well we'll set ourselves up for success."

Sides wrapped up the World of Outlaws spring western swing last Saturday at Arizona Speedway during the Arizona Desert Shootout. He qualified 15th quickest and placed fifth in a heat race to lock into the 15 th starting position for the A Main.

"It wasn't bad, but the bottom of the track went away pretty quick," he said. "There was some meat down there early, especially off the front straightaway. Then it got really slick around the bottom. I passed a few cars. We had a couple of restarts and it was one of those nights when I was in the wrong spot on each restart. About the last six or eight laps it rubbered up through the middle to top and maybe I should have been up there earlier."

Sides recorded a 14th-place finish.

Wednesday's With Wayne: Tumultuous In Texas

Bryan Hulbert -FT. WORTH, Texas (April 11, 2018) The weekend started off with good speed and a solid race car, but ended with a pile of what was a Sprint Car for Wayne Johnson at Tony Stewart presents the Vankor Texas Sprint Car Nationals.

"It was just one of those weekends," stated Johnson.

Starting off with a Heat Race win, the victory put The Oil Medics No. 2c in the redraw where Wayne picked the fourth starting spot. As the field took the green, however, things would go sideways.

"The car was good, we drew a good spot, just had a bad start in the feature," he said. "When we got to turn one, I had Matt [Covington] on the bottom and Harli [White] out front at the top so I was going to split the middle, stay in clean air, and keep moving but that didn't work. I tried to check up when she did, but as soon as I got on the brakes, the car got tight and shot up the track."

Able to return for the remainder of the race, Johnson was able to come back to 15th from the tail of the filed.

Running second in Saturday's Heat Race, Wayne was positioned 11th on the A-Feature grid. Rolling through the first and second turns, the back straightaway was as he would make it before right rear to left front contact with Christopher Bell sent Wayne flipping.

"I had made up my mind on Saturday to just take it easy the first couple of laps to let everything get sorted out. I rolled the bottom of one and two and thought I had cleared Bell and Crockett. Next thing I knew, I was going over and I knew my right rear had gone over Christopher's left front. I was as far down on the track as I could get but it is what it is. I'm not upset. It was just a racing thing on both deals."

The crash scored Wayne 22nd.

Taking the next weekend off to rebuild, the next outings for Wayne Johnson will be at Paducah International Speedway on April 27, Williams Grove Speedway on May 4, and Selinsgrove Speedway on May 5.

Blake Hahn Finishes Fifth In Vankor Texas Sprint Nationals Opener

Bryan Hulbert - FT. WORTH, Texas (April 11, 2018) Carrying momentum into Tony Stewart presents the Vankor Texas Sprint Car Nationals this past weekend with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by Sawblade.com, Blake Hahn kicked off the weekend with a fifth-place finish.

"Friday we were really good. Had a good draw and won our Heat which put us ninth in the feature. The track was tricky and with the wind, it really messed with the car, especially if you got behind someone, but otherwise, it felt good."

Getting to fifth, Hahn had a run for the final transfer into Saturday's A-Feature, but the caution would send him back a spot on the restart.

"I had Tony [Stewart] passed until the caution came out and I thought I had him passed again coming to the checkered. He tripped on the top a little bit, and I had a run off the bottom of turn-four, but he got me at the line."

Finishing third in his Heat Race on Saturday, Hahn found himself starting 14th in the 30-lap A-Feature, but would end up having to dig out of a much deeper hole.

"We had the car nice of the feature. The track had several grooves and we took off at the start but on the red, we ended up getting into the back of Harli White and got the nose wing. I thought about just staying out, but I didn't want to chance it coming apart so I went to the work area. Having to go to the back, we were still able to move forward. Not happy with only getting to 13th, but overall not a bad weekend."

Watching the weather for this weekend, the plan is to race with the Lucas Oil POWRi West Series at Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker, Okla. on Friday, April 13. And Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kan. on Saturday, April 14. If the Saturday Midget event gets called off, Hahn will head for Creek County Speedway in the Champ Sprint division.

The 2018 season is Blake Hahn's 16th year of racing. Starting in Jr. Sprints at the Tulsa Shootout, Hahn has progressed through the ranks with over 90 victories across Micros, Midgets, and Sprint Cars. McIntosh Set for POWRi West at Red Dirt Raceway

Lonnie Wheatley, BIXBY, Okla. (April 12, 2018) – After a pair of idle weekends, Bixby, Oklahoma’s Cannon McIntosh fires back into action with Friday night’s POWRi West Midget League “Midget Meltdown” at Meeker, Oklahoma’s Red Dirt Raceway aboard the RL Hudson/Toyota-TRD No. 08.

It marks the beginning of a busy stretch of racing action for the 15-year-old with a schedule of approximately 60 events over the course of the season including his 360-ci Sprint Car debut next weekend at Creek County Speedway and then Caney Valley Speedway.

Friday’s card will mark McIntosh’s second visit to Red Dirt Raceway in POWRi Midget action after racing to a top-ten finish last September.

“It was a fun racetrack,” McIntosh said of the ¼-mile Red Dirt Raceway.  “You could race anywhere in the heat race then it was hammer down around the top in the feature.”

McIntosh will look for Meeker success after opening up his season in the recent POWRi Midget “Turnpike Challenge” at Oklahoma City’s I-44 Riverside Speedway on March 23-24 where he raced his way into the feature on the second night by virtue of a convincing heat race victory amongst a field of more than 60 entries from throughout the country.

“I didn’t feel too comfortable off the bat,” McIntosh said of the first night aboard the sharp looking No. 08 entry.  “It’s a new car for us and we made some changes the second night and it felt really good.  We got rolling and put it in the show.”

Those laps getting the new machine dialed in should pay dividends in Friday’s POWRi West Midget event at Red Dirt Raceway.

Along with RL Hudson and Toyota-TRD, other marketing partners making the ambitious 2018 slate of events possible includes American Discount, Complete Auto Care, Best Graphics, Fieldhouse Gear, Precision Inspection, Sanders and Associates, Panels by Smoke, Walker Performance, Sanders Wheels, American Discount Brake and Muffler, D&N Fabrication, Car and Fleet and Infinity Shocks.

Courtney Sets Sights on Kokomo Grand Prix

Lonnie Wheatley, INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 12, 2018) – Kokomo Speedway has been a source of success for Tyler Courtney in recent times.

It’s something that “Sunshine” hopes to continue aboard the Clauson-Marshall Racing Driven2SaveLives/Indiana Donor Network No. 7bc Midget as the USAC National Midget series fires back into action with this weekend’s Kokomo Grand Prix on Friday and Saturday.

It will be Courtney’s first on-track competition in three weeks after having a pair of Sprint Car weekends dominated by Mother Nature.

“I’m ready to get back to racing, I’ve been bored,” Courtney said of the recent run of foul weather.

Indiana’s Kokomo Speedway is an ideal locale to resume action.

“We’ve been pretty good the last few times there,” Courtney says.  “Hopefully we can continue that.”

Pretty good is an understatement, as “Sunshine” earned a third-place finish in last year’s Kokomo Grand Prix finale and another third-place finish in the Kokomo leg of USAC’s Indiana Midget Week.  And, on the Sprint Car side of things, Courtney topped last August’s Kokomo Sprint Car Smackdown VI, a triumph among three wins in his three most recent Kokomo outings.

The weekend can prove crucial in the USAC National Midget points chase as well.

“We need to get both nights in, I need to make up some points,” Courtney says after being collected in a qualifying race mishap in the season-opening Shamrock Classic in March.  “There aren’t that many nights on the USAC Midget schedule, I need every one that I can get.”

“Sunshine” opened the 2018 campaign with a pair of USAC Sprint Car wins.  This weekend, he looks to add his first USAC Midget score in the opening pair of outdoor events of the year.

2018 Quick Stats:  10 races, 2 wins, 5 top-fives, 5 top-tens.

Up Next: USAC National Midgets “Kokomo Grand Prix” at Indiana’s Kokomo Speedway on Friday and Saturday (April 13-14).

Reutzel Kicks Off All Star Title Pursuit this Weekend

Lonnie Wheatley, CLUTE, Texas (April 12, 2018) – It begins for real this weekend.

After fervently working over the last several months to establish a new team and getting in some early season race action with the World of Outlaws, Aaron Reutzel and the newly-formed Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports No. 87 Sprint Car team begin the pursuit of the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car championship with a set of events this weekend.

And, after last weekend’s pair of scheduled All Star cards in Ohio were washed out, it all begins in Posse territory for the driver of the Folkens Brothers Tucking/Dissolvalloy Downhole Revolution Triple-X Sprint Car.

“I love racing there, the fans are incredible and the competition is tough,” Reutzel says.

The weekend kicks off at Central Pennsylvania’s Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg on Friday before moving on to Port Royal Speedway on Saturday and then shifting westward to Bedford Speedway on Sunday.

Opening the season with a handful of World of Outlaws events on a rain-plagued West Coast, Reutzel picked off his first career WoO win along the way before making a last-minute decision to take in three Posse territory races last weekend at Williams Grove, Port Royal and BAPS Motor Speedway.

“It was a last minute decision,” Reutzel says.  “The weather cleared up enough and we left Friday morning.”

The Precision Catalyst/Hollywood Blasting & Coating/Beard Equipment entry showed good speed each night that wasn’t necessarily reflected in finishes of 16th, 12th and 17th.

With a points handicap format in effect at Williams Grove, Reutzel started at the tail of the final heat race in his first visit of the season to the storied half-mile clay oval.  “I felt like we were fast at the Grove,” the driver of the Nattress Construction/Momentum Racing Suspensions entry says.

Being in the final heat race proved to be problematic on this night though.  “The motor started missing, then there was a quick intermission before the feature and we didn’t have time to figure out what the problem was,” Reutzel explains.  “It just turned out to be a broken spark plug, but that cost us the night.”

After drawing the last position for his Saturday night heat race at Port Royal, Reutzel was once again on the move.  Reutzel advanced in his heat race and then raced into fifth in the feature before spinning after trying to slide into fourth position.

“We were really good, I just made a mistake,” Reutzel said of the Port Royal outcome.

The former ASCS National champion came out strong at BAPS Motor Speedway as well, winning his heat race and then leading the early portion of the feature.

“We led quite a few laps, and then I chose the bottom on a restart,” Reutzel recalls.  “If I had known it was Lance (Dewease) in second, I probably would have taken the outside instead.”

While Dewease took advantage of the outside, Reutzel kept pace.

“I stayed with him for a while, then I got to racing some other cars and wrecked it,” Reutzel says.  “Hopefully we have that out of our system.”

Reutzel gets right back at it this weekend by returning to Williams Grove and Port Royal before making his first visit to Bedford Speedway.

“I’m just ready to get back to racing every week, we’ve had enough of the bad weather,” Reutzel wraps up.

A busy season awaits Reutzel and the BRM No. 87 Sprint Car team with a full slate of nearly 50 All Star Circuit of Champions events along with a healthy dose of World of Outlaws competition mixed in as well.

2018 Quick Stats:  8 races, 1 win, 2 top-fives, 2 top-tens.

Up Next: All Star Circuit of Champions at Williams Grove Speedway (Mechanicsburg, PA) on Friday, Port Royal (PA) Speedway on Saturday and Bedford (PA) Speedway on Sunday.  For those unable to catch the action in person, it is available via PPV on https://www.speedshifttv.com/.
