BROWNSBURG, Ind. (April 10, 2023) - It’s been an up and down campaign for Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing, but despite the rocky start in his quest for an 11th World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship, Schatz continues to find a way to persevere, no matter the situation. The Fargo, North Dakota, native put that narrative to the test on Saturday night in 81 Speedway’s Jason Johnson Classic where he rallied from 17th to 13th, just short of attaining his sixth WoO top-ten outcome of the year.

Schatz, ace of the Advance Auto Parts, Carquest, Ford Motor Company, Ford Performance, MadJax XSeries, Curb Records, Sage Fruit, Absolute Automation and Security, Hunt Brothers Pizza, Elliott’s Custom Trailers and Carts, No. 15 sprint car, opened the recent weekend with an 11th-place score at US 36 Raceway in Osborn, Missouri, on Friday, April 7. The reigning Knoxville Nationals champion was 12th with two laps remaining, sneaking by Roth Motorsports’ James McFadden prior to the white flag.

With all results recorded, Schatz remains seventh in the current World of Outlaws driver championship standings, padded by four top-five performances in his first 12 starts of the season.

ON DECK:
Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing will continue their 2023 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series campaign with the I-55 Outlaw Showdown at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Missouri, on Friday and Saturday, April 14-15.

Bayston and CJB Motorsports find top-five in Jason Johnson Classic; I-55 double ahead on WoO campaign

2023 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Standings: 9th | 1544 points

By Fully Injected Motorsports:

CARLISLE, Pa. (April 10, 2023) - Spencer Bayston and Carlisle, Pennsylvania’s CJB Motorsports may have been robbed of a potential top-five finish on Friday night at US 36 Raceway in Osborn, Missouri, caught up in a “nowhere to go” situation with David Gravel in their pursuit of the front, but the reigning World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Rookie of the Year award winners preserved and pressed on, ultimately capping their two-race swing through Missouri and Kansas with a top-five the following evening at 81 Speedway in Wichita, Kansas.

Bayston, now a six-time top-ten finisher during Outlaws competition in 2023, finished fourth in 81 Speedway’s $20,000-to-win Jason Johnson Classic, starting in the exact same position while simultaneously pressuring for a podium.

Although scored 22nd at US 36 Raceway due to the aforementioned incident, Lebanon, Indiana’s Bayston was on the move, starting tenth on the A-Main grid before pressuring the top-five. The race-ending tangle occurred with less than halfway to race.

“This past weekend was a huge testament to the progress this team has made. Although we had poor qualifying efforts, they didn’t hold us back from what should have been two top-five finishes,” Bayston, ace of the TrueTimber Camo, Rothco, JRC Transportation, Nyce Crete and Landis, Ecynbro Trucking, C&S Lawn and Landscape, Kistler Engines, Highlands’ Power Sports, High Performance Lubricants, No. 5 sprint car, said. “I’m super pleased with the gains we have made in the last handful of nights. Our cars are getting closer and closer to where they need to be. The speed and balance we have right now has me really excited to go race for some big money in the coming days.”

GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. Ian Madsen and TKS find bad luck in 34 Raceway’s IRA opener; High Limit and Knoxville on deck

By Fully Injected Motorsports:

MITCHELLVILLE, Iowa (April 10, 2023) - Although their first weekend of competition was ultimately cut short, forced to retire a day early due to extensive frame damage as the result of incidental contact, Ian Madsen and TKS Motorsports were well on their way to a top-tier finish against the IRA Outlaw Sprint Series at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, but as hinted, bad luck stepped in and intervened.

Madsen, who kicked-off his Friday evening at the eastern Iowa oval with a runner-up finish during his respective heat race, followed by a third-place finish in the first of two dashes, was in the hunt for a top-five outcome when the aforementioned incident occurred, getting together with another competitor through the middle of turns three and four. The Australia native did race on, but was unable to recover, as he was scored 22nd. Further review would unveil frame damage forcing the team to cap their weekend ahead of schedule.

“We’ll shake this off and move forward. We were showing a lot of speed up until that point,” Troy Renfro, owner of the Albaugh - Your Alternative, Iowa Barnstormers, Des Moines Industrial Products, deWit Construction, Jersey Freeze Ice Cream, Freedom Concrete Pumping, Speck USA, Finer Cuts Lawn Care, No. 2KS sprint car, said. “Hats off to this entire team. We were able to make the necessary repairs and we’re ready to go for tomorrow night’s High Limit event at Lakeside Speedway. We know our potential and I think we’re all excited to battle for $50,000.”

ONE TO REMEMBER: Rico Abreu pockets 20K in Jason Johnson Classic triumph at 81 Speedway

Track: 81 Speedway (Wichita, Kansas)
Rico Abreu A-Main Finish (Start): 1st (2nd)

ST. HELENA, Calif. (April 10, 2023) - Rico Abreu’s racing resume is full of memorable accomplishments, but to score a victory in Jason Johnson’s honor - a former Knoxville Nationals champion - is right at the top, as the St. Helena, California, native led all 30 circuits on Saturday night at 81 Speedway in Wichita, Kansas, solidifying a $20,000 payday, as well as the Jason Johnson Classic trophy.

Abreu, who started second on the A-Main grid before racing wire-to-wire, is now a two-time winner with the World of Outlaws in 2023; his first multi-win season with the Greatest Show On Dirt since 2018.

Although a flawless attempt in his first-ever visit to 81 Speedway, the former Chili Bowl Nationals champion was forced to fend off a late race charge by Jason Johnson Racing’s Carson Macedo, who is currently on top of the World of Outlaws championship standings.

“These wins become really emotional when you get up here on the front straightaway in front of a packed house and in front of Jaxx,” Abreu said in victory lane. “It’s a very cherishing moment for my team and I. We’re all here racing for Jason Johnson’s legacy.”

An outstanding weekend on the whole for Rico Abreu and Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing, just one night prior at US 36 Raceway in Osborn, Missouri, Abreu finished sixth, and when combined with all of his recent statistics, the Californian has finished inside the top-ten six times in his first seven starts of the season.

Other recent highlights include finishing seventh at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Alabama, sixth at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Mississippi, and tenth at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas.

“It all comes down to my team. They do an amazing job,” Abreu added. “Ricky, his critical thinking, and the way Zack adapts to Ricky’s thinking, and how Brady works through and processes things. It’s so cool to see.”

ON DECK:
