Shannon Babb Scores MARS FALS Frenzy Win at Fairbury’s American Legion Speedway

By Michael Despain

FAIRBURY, ILLINOIS – August 11, 2018 – The MARS Super Late Model Racing Series would conclude a pair of racing events in Illinois at Fairbury’s American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, IL for the 4th Annual FALS Frenzy event and Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, IL would score the victory worth $10,000 in what was a very entertaining event that featured three different race leaders.

The victory for Babb was his second MARS Super Late Model Racing Series win of the season and sixth career tour triumph as well and would come behind the wheel of the Petroff Towing, Donley Trucking, John Keebler, CGI, Trane Heat and Air sponsored #18 Rocket Chassis, Clements Race Engines powered entry.

The start of the 4th Annual FALS Frenzy event would be null and void when Daniel Flessner would spin his machine in turn four as the field came to get the green flag. When the racing did get underway, Tanner English would shoot to the race lead, with Shannon Babb, Frank Heckenast, Jr., Ryan Unzicker, and Brian Shirley in pursuit. With English showing the way, Heckenast, Jr. would challenge Shirley for the third position and Shirley would go to the third spot on lap five. English, Babb, Shirley, and Heckenast, Jr. would race together in a pack at this point, while Michael Kloos would take the fifth position from Unzicker on lap eight. At this point, Shirley would pressure Babb for the runner-up slot and Shirley would snatch the spot from Babb on lap nine. With English maintaining the top position, Shirley would begin to close in on English as the pair would enter traffic and start the lapping process on lap fifteen. English and Shirley would weave their way in and out of lapped cars, with English maintaining the lead, with Heckenast, Jr. right on Shirley’s back bumper. Shirley would pull alongside English on lap nineteen and the duo would race side-by-side for the lead until Shirley would take the race lead exiting turn two on lap twenty-one, while Kloos and Heckenast, Jr. would race for the fourth spot, with Kloos claiming the spot again on lap twenty-three. A caution would wave at this point of the contest on lap twenty-four when Donny Walden would spin his machine on the frontchute after a trio of cars checked-up when Mike Spatola slowed.

The restart would see Shirley on the point, while Babb would drive past English for the second and bring Heckenast, Jr. along into the third position, shuffling English back to the fourth spot. Babb would roll the topside and challenge Shirley for the lead and would claim the position with a top-side turn four pass on lap twenty-six. Brandon Sheppard would begin to show some muscle at this point after racing his way into the top five on the lap twenty-four restart, pressuring Heckenast, Jr. for the third position on lap thirty-one and would actually grab the spot one circuit later, only to see the pass voided when a caution for debris would wave on lap thirty-one. The final restart of the event would see Babb get a great launch into turn one, while Heckenast, Jr. would grab the second position from Shirley and the pair would settle into a battle for the runner-up slot as they chased after Babb. Shirley would regain the second position on lap thirty-seven, only to have Heckenast, Jr. go back into second on lap thirty-nine, but Shirley would not give up and would take second for good on lap forty-two. Sheppard would find the high-side to his liking in the final laps and he would take third from Heckenast, Jr. on lap forty-three. Babb would go unchallenged the remainder of the way and score the victory, with Shirley settling for second, while Sheppard would come home in third. Heckenast, Jr. would finish fourth, while early race-leader English would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten finishers would be eleventh-place starter Allen Weisser, Gordy Gundaker, thirteenth-place starter Tim Manville, Michael Kloos, and Kevin Weaver.

The MARS Super Late Model Racing Series next events will be Friday and Saturday October 12 and October 13 at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY. The 17th Annual Hugh “Junebug” Rowland Memorial will take place on Friday October 12, paying $3,000 to win. The 28th Annual Fall Classic will take place on Saturday October 13, paying $10,000 to win. Both events will be co-sanctioned with the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Bonus Series presented by Sunoco Race Fuels and Tennessee RV.
