Dale McDowell Sweeps Southern All Stars Weekend
Lucrative Fall Nationals Doubleheader on Deck

MOORESBURG, Tenn. (10/21/20) – Dale McDowell broke out the broom over the weekend at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn.

McDowell made a clean sweep of both nights of the Southern Alll Star Racing Series competition in his Shane McDowell Racing/ E-Z-GO No. 17m Kinzer Drilling/ Quality Natural Gas/ Team Zero Race Cars/ Clements Racing Engine Super Late Model.

Drawing 34 Late Models for Friday’s King of the Mountain Championship opener, McDowell posted the second fastest time in his qualifying group behind Donald McIntosh, which positioned him fourth on the starting grid for the opening night feature.

With polesitter Ricky Weiss setting the pace early, McDowell snuck past the leader amid lapped-traffic on lap 21 and would hold the lead until a late-race tangle forced him to duck to avoid a collision.

After a caution on the same lap negated Dale’s misfortunes and placed him back on the point, McDowell fended off Weiss over the final two laps to secure his fourth win of the season and a $3,000 payday.

Weiss, Sam Seawright, Ashton Winger, and Tommy Kerr trailed him to the checkers in the 30-lap affair.

“I got a little lucky there and got Ricky in lapped traffic. He had the car to beat and we had the second-place car, but if you reversed us I think we were pretty even." McDowell said. "I had checked up and slowed down when the car spun (coming to the white flag), so I really didn’t know what they were going to do or which way the ruling would go. I got a gift there when I passed (Wiess) in lapped traffic, so if he’d got me back there it is what it is. Good close racing had to be good for the fans. Hopefully we can come back and put on show tomorrow too."

The following night, Dale topped the 33-car field in time trials before picking up a heat race victory. Starting the feature in second, McDowell outran polesitter Ashton Winger late in the 50-lapper to record his second win in as many nights and fifth of 2020.

Finishing ahead of Ricky Weiss, Sam Seawright, Michael Page, and Austin Kirkpatrick, Dale pocketed a $7,000 prize.

"I was really surprised," McDowell said of Ashton Winger's unsuccessful slide-job attempt for the lead. "If it would've stuck, it would've been an awesome move. He just carried an awful lot of speed into that corner and my hat was going to be off to him if he could carry that much speed off and stick. Those young guys make it exciting."

Next up for McDowell, is a pair of Schaeffer’s Fall Nationals events in North Carolina and Georgia. First up will be a visit to Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown, N.C. on Thursday, October 22. The 17th Annual FK Rod Ends “Tarheel 50” will boast a $10,000 payday. From there, the tour will venture to Senoia (Ga.) Raceway for the annual running of the “Billy Clanton Classic” on Saturday, October 24. A top prize of $10,000 will be up for grabs as part of the 5th Annual “Showdown at Senoia.”

Hagar Earns Runner-Up Result at Riverside International Speedway

Inside Line Promotions - WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (Oct. 21, 2020) - Derek Hagar recorded his 12th podium finish of the season last Saturday at Riverside International Speedway where he piloted a 305ci winged sprint car for Todd Bradford during the Jimmy Huffman Memorial.

"Todd is a good friend and a good customer," he said. "He was on vacation last week and asked if I'd drive his car. We got it ready for the weekend. He has nice equipment and it was an honor to drive for him and give him a good top-five finish."

Hagar began the night by advancing from his third starting position to a runner-up result during a heat race.

"We had some issues with the motor not wanting to run when it was cold," he said. "We got passed and fell to fifth in the heat race. Then we worked our way back to second. They don't do passing points so that put us starting eighth in the feature.

"We made quick work and got to fourth quickly. We kept having cautions and finally had a long run. We got to second with about five laps to go. The leader, Howard Moore, was gone. I'm not sure we had anything for him with a yellow, but I wish we had clean track quicker. I felt like I started to run him down with a handful of laps to go, but we ran out of time."

Hagar's second-place showing was his fourth runner-up result of the season.

He plans on taking this weekend off before wrapping up the season at Riverside International Speedway during the 12th annual USCS Flip Flop 50 and USCS Fall Nationals on Oct. 30-31 with the USCS Series.

Powell Memorial at All-Tech Raceway Up Next

LOUDON, Tenn. (10/21/20) – Cory Hedgecock tallied his tenth win of the season Friday night at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn.

Driving the E-Z-GO No. 23 Pace Performance/ Budget Transmissions/ Rocket Chassis/ Eagle Racing Engine
Late Model, Hedgecock led all 30 laps of the Topless Outlaw Series feature to earn a $3,000 payday.

“Our Topless Outlaw entry was flawless on Friday night. I wish we’d had some more success in the other classes but that’s racing, we’ll live to fight another day,” commented Hedgecock. “Hopefully the weather holds out for this weekend’s big event at All-Tech, I’m looking forward to redemption.”

Cory topped the 23-car field in time trials, which positioned him on the pole for the main event. Blasting into the lead on the opening lap, Hedgecock led wire-to-wire to secure his fourth Topless Outlaw Series win of the season. Cory took the checkers by more than five seconds ahead of Chase King, Kyle Courtney, John Ownbey, and Austin Neely.

With 34 Southern All-Star Racing Series entries on hand, Hedgecock locked his spot into the opening night feature with the fourth fastest time in his qualifying group. Rolling off seventh, Cory cut a left-rear tire on the opening lap that brought an early end to his evening.

In a stout field of 45 American Crate All-Star Series (ACAS) entries, Hedgecock locked his spot into the main event with a heat race victory. With $2,000 on the line, Cory broke into a podium spot early and was challenging for the win when mechanical issues struck on lap 28, dropping him back to 19th when the checkered flag flew.

On Saturday night for the $7,000-to-win, Southern All-Star  Racing Series season-finale, Cory posted a third place finish in his heat, which positioned him ninth on the starting grid for the main event. Running into trouble early, Hedgecock was an early retiree from the 50-lapper on lap 21.

Following the 15th fastest time in a field of 34 ACAS entries on Saturday, Hedgecock jumped up one spot in his heat race to place second behind Jake Teague. Starting the $3,000-to-win A-Main in 12th, Cory faded one spot to finish 13th.

Zeigler Captures Jim Dunn Memorial at Portsmouth
Bedford Speedway’s Keystone Cup Up Next

CHALK HILL, Pa. (10/21/20) – Mason Zeigler’s weekend at Portsmouth Raceway Park may not have went as planned, but he didn’t go home empty handed.

Coming up just short of a transfer position into the 40th Annual Dirt Track World Championship, Zeigler earned a spot in the Jim Dunn Memorial non-qualifier race. He would lead flag-to-flag in his JLE Industries No. 25z Ohiopyle Vacation Rentals/ MS Shock Therapy/ Rocket Chassis/ Cornett Racing Engine Super Late Model to pocket $3,000.

“We had a couple of hiccups this weekend that knocked us out of contention for the big show,” said Zeigler. “We put the wrong carburetor on when we thought it was going to be slick and that just put us behind all weekend. I wish I could have started the 100-lapper with this car. We have a new package on this hot rod, and it’s been great. Thanks to everyone who worked hard to make this event possible and give us an opportunity to race for this kind of money during these difficult times.”

On Friday evening Mason Zeigler was one of 63 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series entries on hand at Portsmouth (Ohio) Raceway Park for the 40th Annual Dirt Track World Championship. Locking the Top-3 from heat races into Saturday night’s A-Main, Zeigler posted a fifth place finish in his heat race, sending him into the B-Main.

Needing to place second or better to make the $100,000-to-win Dirt Track World Championship, Mason came one spot short with a third place outing. Earning a spot into the Jim Dunn Memorial non-qualifiers feature, Zeigler outran Colten Burdette in the 25-lapper to secure a $3,000 payday.

This upcoming weekend, Mason Zeigler will be in action at Bedford (Pa.) Fairgrounds Speedway for the 3rd Annual Keystone Cup. The October 23-24 extravaganza culminates with a 60-lap, $20,000-to-win finale on Saturday.

Mallett Rides Successful Winter Nationals to Sixth-Place Finish in ASCS National Tour Standings

Inside Line Promotions - MESQUITE, Texas (Oct. 21, 2020) - Jordon Mallett qualified for the feature during both nights of the 47th annual Winter Nationals last weekend when he put a stamp on the 2020 Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour season at Devil's Bowl Speedway.

Mallett finished seventh on Friday and 17th during the Saturday night finale. The results locked up the sixth position in the ASCS National Tour championship standings, which is a three-spot improvement on last year's ninth-place finish.

"We had a decent weekend and it helped us secure sixth in the standings, which is a pretty cool deal," he said. "I'm kind of glad it's over and now we can now look toward 2021 and try to improve even more."

Mallett began Friday night by winning a heat race from the third position. That secured the third starting spot for the A Main. Mallett struggled with an ill-handling race car for the first half of the race and fell outside of the top 10 before rallying back for a seventh-place finish.

"We had a fast race car right off the trailer in the heat and for whatever reason we just struggled the first half of the feature," he said. "We rallied back forward, but it's a 25-lap race and we need to be good the entire time if we want to be contending for wins."

Mallett again showed speed early in the night on Saturday by finishing where he started - second - in a heat race and locking himself directly into the feature in the 11th starting position.

Mallett relied on his notebook for the feature setup, which was based on only a handful of career starts at the unique oval. However, he realized in the first handful of laps that he was lacking speed off the turns and he salvaged a 17th-place showing. The top-20 finish was the 18 th of the season for the Greenbrier, Ark., native.

"We were able to lock straight into the show from the heat race, which is always a good thing when you're not running B Mains," he said. "We needed more gear in the car to be able to get off the turns better in the A Main, but we now know what to do when track conditions change like that going forward."

Mallett was happy with the way his team was able to persevere to finish sixth in the standings despite the limited races this season because of COVID-19. With his team making the change to Triple X chassis for the 2020 season he wasn't sure how long the transition would take to be comfortable, especially with limited races to make it happen. However, Mallett credits the support system and quality of the equipment as a reason he was able to find success.

"We were able to go all season without any DNFs and completing laps is really the only way to learn and grow," he said. "In a year like this one it's important to feel comfortable and it's reassuring when you've got folks like Triple X willing to lend a hand or ear whenever needed. To finish sixth in our first year with them against the ASCS National Tour competition is nothing to be upset about by any means and I'm looking forward to more years running their stuff."

QUICK RESULTS -

Oct. 16 - Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas - Heat race: 1 (3); Feature: 7 (3).
