Reutzel Finishes Out Florida in Strong Form at DIRTcar Nationals

Lonnie Wheatley, CLUTE, Texas (February 13, 2019) – Aaron Reutzel and the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports No. 87 Sprint Car team finished out their Florida in February events on a positive note with a solid performance at last week’s DIRTcar Nationals at Barberville’s Volusia Speedway Park.

Reutzel finished out the week ranked seventh in both the final DIRTcar Nationals points as well as the early NOS Energy Drinks World of Outlaws Sprint Car points.

After opening the week with runs of ninth and 12th in All Star Circuit of Champions competition on Wednesday and Thursday, Reutzel and the Folkens Brothers Trucking/Dissolvalloy Downhole Revolution Triple-X team finished out the week with showings of 11th and seventh in the opening World of Outlaws events of the year before Sunday night’s finale was rained out.

“All in all, it wasn’t too bad for us,” Reutzel commented.  “Our starting point wasn’t quite as good as needed it to be.  But by the end of the last night, I felt like we were back to where we were last year.  I really wish we could have got the Sunday night show in.”

The reigning All Star Circuit of Champions kingpin began the week timing in 19th quick in Wednesday’s All Star card and then winning his heat race to land a Dash starting position.  After starting the feature in tenth, Reutzel drove the Precision Catalyst/Hollywood Blasting & Coating/Beard Equipment machine to a ninth place finish.

Thursday’s final All Star card of the Florida portion of the season netted Reutzel and the Nattress Construction/Momentum Racing Suspensions team Hard Charger honors for the night after rallying from 24th to capture a 12th place finish.

“We had a hard time qualifying the first couple of nights or so, it made us work that much more to get good finishes,” Reutzel says.

The qualifying woes continued as the World of Outlaws kicked off the season on Friday night, but Reutzel rallied from seventh to third in his heat race to salvage the 12th starting position for the feature event and then finished out the night in eleventh.

Getting things dialed in what proved to be the final night of the DIRTcar Nationals, Reutzel timed in ninth-quick to lead the way to a seventh-place finish on the night.

“We got to where we needed to be, now we’re looking forward to the Texas races next weekend,” Reutzel concluded.

Reutzel and the BRM No. 87 team will be back in action with the NOS Energy Drinks World of Outlaws Sprint Car series next weekend at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, TX, on Friday night, February 22, and then Kilgore’s Lonestar Speedway on Saturday, February 23.

2019 Quick Stats:  9 races, 4 top-tens.

Next Up:  World of Outlaws Sprint Cars at Cotton Bowl Speedway (Paige, TX) on February 22 and Lonestar Speedway (Kilgore, TX) on February 23.

Hafertepe Grabs Pair Of Podium Finishes At Bubba Raceway Park

Bryan Hulbert - OCALA, Fla. (February 14, 2019) Kicking off his 2019 season at Bubba Raceway Park this past weekend in USCS competition, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. collected a pair of podium finishes at the egg-shaped oval.

Coming in Friday with a run from seventh to second in his Heat Race, Sam positioned the Hills Racing No. 15h on the pole of the A-Feature. Leading the first 11 rounds, a mid-race restart would allow eventual race winner, Davie Franek, his shot at the lead with Hafertepe slipping back to third in the closing laps.

"We'd been going through lapped traffic and was able to pass on the top and the bottom. The top is where we'd led it from the start of the race, and I went there on the restart and the bottom had started to come in and take rubber. Just kind of gave it away really but that's part of it sometimes. I definitely felt like we had the fastest car so that was a plus and just took that steam into the next night," commented Hafertepe on the Friday performance.

Betting his Saturday Heat Race performance to a win, Sam lined up fifth in the A-Feature with his run at race leader, Mark Smith, building strong in the closing laps, but just short, after falling back to nearly 10th at the start of the race.

"They worked the track a little bit before the feature, and they just didn't run it in enough. I went in the first few laps and just slid through the slime so that put us back to about ninth or tenth, so I had to make a charge through the field. Just came up one spot short but had a good car and was able to run Mark down in the closing laps even with the bottom taking rubber again. It would have been tough to pass him, but we had one of the better cars all night."

Using the Florida trip to test and tune, Hafertepe so far is very pleased with the way the car has progressed, especially with East Bay Raceway Park on the horizon.

"From what we generally do at a lot of places, we basically did the opposite and we seemed to have good speed right out the box and the results reinforce that to run good two nights in a row with a chance to win both nights. That makes up happy going into East Bay and try to pick up the $10,000 on Saturday night."

Already sitting pit side at the 43rd annual Winter Nationals and 18th annual Ronald Laney Memorial, action at East Bay Raceway Park takes place February 14-16, 2019.

Live coverage from the one-third mile oval is available through www.FloRacing.com.
