Miniseries Action Continues this Week

Batesville, Arkansas (06/27/23) – Billy Moyer Jr. busted into the win column last Tuesday aboard his Henderson Motorsports No. 21 Mesilla Valley Transportation / Phillips CPA / Pontiac RV / Bilstein / Longhorn Race Car / Clements Racing Engines Super Late Model.

The $5,000 victory was achieved in DIRTcar Summer Nationals action at Moberly (Mo.) Motorsports Park.

“We had a good week of action with the Summer Nationals. In five starts we had a win, three podium finishes, and five Top-5 finishes. We’re finally getting the consistency back to our program that we’ve been missing,” Moyer Jr. said. “We’ve got another busy stretch of racing this week, and we’re focused on chasing more big checks.

“I can’t say enough about my team and everyone and everyone who supports us. A huge thank you goes out to them all.”

Joining the DIRTcar Summer Nationals last Monday for the second week of the Hell Tour, Billy Moyer Jr. invaded Moberly (Mo.) Motorsports Park to pilot his Henderson Motorsports No. 21 Super Late Model.

In a field of 32 entries, Moyer Jr. followed up the fastest lap in his group with a heat race victory. Starting on the front row for the feature, Billy led the opening 16 circuits before a charging Drake Troutman stole the top spot on lap 17. Remaining within striking distance, Moyer Jr. regained the lead on lap 22 and paced the final seven laps to secure his first win of the 2023 season and 11th-career DIRTcar Summer Nationals triumph.

He earned a $5,000 payday ahead of Jason Feger, Kye Blight, Chad Finley, and Frank Heckenast Jr.

Amongst a field of 31 DIRTcar Summer Nationals competitors on Wednesday at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway, Billy snuck into the $5,000-to-win A-Main with a fourth-place finish in his heat. Moving forward five spots in the 40-lap affair, Moyer Jr. reeled in a seventh-place finish.

With Thursday’s Hell Tour stop at Spoon River Speedway (Banner, Ill.) cancelled, Moyer Jr. qualified for Friday’s $10,000-to-win DIRTcar Summer Nationals event at Brownstown Bullring (Brownstown, Ill.) via a runner-up run in his heat race. Working his way into the top-five, Billy advanced two positions to place fifth. He chased Jason Feger, Billy Moyer, Shannon Babb, and Stormy Scott to the checkers.

With another $10,000 paycheck on line in Saturday’s contest at Federated Raceway at I-55 (Pevely, Mo.), Billy followed up a third-place showing in his heat with a 10th-to-6th run in the 40-lap feature.

The second week on tour with the DIRTcar Summer Nationals drew to a close on Sunday at Lincoln Speedway (Lincoln, Ill.) with Moyer capping off the successful week with another top-five finish and sixth consecutive top-10 run. With a heat win placing him on the second row for the $7,500-to-win A-Main, Billy lost two spots to finish fifth.

He finished in a tie for the second position with Ashton Winger in the Week #2 point standings.

Ricky Thornton Jr. Claims First-Career Firecracker 100 Title
Banks Over $55,000 for Weekend Wins at Lernerville

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (06/27/23) – Ricky Thornton Jr. steamrolled into another Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series weekend and came with a pair of victories, including the $50,000 winner’s check in the Firecracker 100 finale.

The wins were achieved at Pennsylvania’s Lernerville Speedway aboard his SSI Motorsports / Hoker Trucking No. 20RT Dyno One Inc. / Excel Floor Covering / Sub-Surface of Indiana/ Longhorn Chassis/ Clements Racing Engine Super Late Model.

Thornton Jr. overcame a mid-race battle with Hudson O’Neal for the five-figure win on Saturday night. With his total-win count for 2023 growing to 17, including 10 LOLMDS victories, Ricky padded his lead atop the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) standings.

“I really don’t know how I pulled away from him [Hudson O’Neal]. I felt like I had a really good race with JD [Jonathan Davenport] for a while and then Hudson got by me, and I just rolled through the middle, and he [O’Neal] got behind a lapped car. I wasn’t positive what tires he had on. I know they had talked about going soft there and they were kind of committed to the bottom, and I don’t know what they ended up on. I felt like I gave the race away once he got by me. I got behind Earl [Pearson Jr.] and I just kicked it into another gear and I threw a Hail Mary to the top and it stuck. I was able to run there for a long-time and then with about 15 to go I moved back down to the middle” said the 32-year-old Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points leader.

“We’re on a roll right now and everyone with this SSI Motorsports team is busting their tails every hour of every day to make it happen. I’m just the lucky guy, who gets to hold the steering wheel.”

For the Firecracker 100 weekend, Ricky Thornton Jr. and SSI Motorsports followed the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) to Lernerville Speedway (Sarver, Pa.) on Thursday afternoon for the opening round of the 17th running of the three-day event.

With the 51-car field split into two groups for a pair of preliminary features, Thornton took part in time trials and heat races but his 25-lap preliminary was postponed Friday afternoon.

Starting Friday afternoon’s rain-delayed feature in fifth via a runner-up finish in his heat race on Thursday, Ricky made contact with a lapped-car while running second that forced him to retire with front-end damage.

Later Friday night, Thornton Jr. outran Brandon Overton in his heat race to pick up the eight-lap victory. After setting an early pace in his prelim, Ricky exchanged sliders with Jonathan Davenport late in the 25-lapper en route to his 16th win of the season and $5,000.

On Saturday, Ricky raced his way into the Firecracker 100 finale with a third-to-first run in his heat. Leading a total of 47 laps throughout the 100-lap affair, Thornton wrestled away the top spot from Hudson O’Neal on lap 75 and paced the final 25 circuits to claim his second win in as many nights and hefty $50,000 prize.

He recorded his 13th-career LOLMDS triumph 4.912-seconds ahead of Hudson O’Neal, with Davenport, Gregg Satterlee, and Devin Moran completing the Top-5 finishers.

Ricky has built up a 205-point advantage over Hudson O'Neal atop the latest LOLMDS point standings.

Full results from the weekend are available at www.LucasDirt.com .

RTJ continues his support of his first LOLMDS title this weekend with a trip to Muskingum County Speedway (Zanesville, Ohio) for the Freedom 60. Friday’s action finds the field divided into a trio of $3,000-to-win qualifying features, while Saturday’s program is headlined by a $30,000-to-win finale.

The inaugural win in the division for Trey came in the House Divided 40 aboard his Mills Concrete No. 14jr GW Performance / Integra Racing Shocks / Black Diamond Race Car / H&R Racing Engine Super Late Model.

“What a dream come true to get my first Super Late Model win, and best of all it came in a great race against a great field of racers. I really had to work for it and this car was great. I had never been to Whynot (Motorsports Park) before but I knew that bottom is where our car would be best, and everything worked out,” said the 15-year-old Mills.

Trey Mills continued his Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series (HTFSDS) title hunt on Friday evening as he entered his Mills Concrete No. 14JR into competition at Whynot (Miss.) Motorsports Park for the House Divided 40 doubleheader weekend.

For the $5,000-to-win opener, Mills clicked off the second-fastest lap in his qualifying group before holding on for a win in his heat race. Rolling off from the third-position in the 40-lap main event, Trey rolled the bottom lane to perfection and dueled with Payton Freeman before running away with the lead for good on lap 34.

Mills paced the field in the final six laps to score the $5,000 payday. He was followed across the line in his first-career Super Late Model win by Payton Freeman, Wil Herrington, Josh Putnam, and Neil Baggett.

With the field elevated to 36 Late Models on Saturday, Trey grabbed the final transfer spot in his heat race, which placed him on the seventh row of the second 40-lap feature of the week. Chasing a $10,000 weekend sweep, Mills charged through the field and picked off several competitors to score a Top-10 finish in seventh.

Trey currently sits fourth in the latest Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series standings.

Hudson O’Neal on the Podium in Lernerville’s Firecracker 100
LOLMDS Freedom 60 Up Next at Muskingum County Speedway

SHINNSTON, W.Va. (06/27/23) – For the second-straight week Hudson O’Neal finished in a runner-up position in a $50,000-to-win Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) event with his Rocket1 Racing / Valvoline / Seubert Calf Ranches No. 1 Ace Metal Works / XR1 Rocket Chassis / Durham Racing Engine Super Late Model.

His latest podium performance came on Saturday night in the finale for the 17th annual Firecracker 100 at Lernerville Speedway. O’Neal led multiple times for a total of eight laps before ultimately crossing the finish line in second behind Ricky Thornton Jr.

“I don’t know if I had anything left for him [Ricky Thornton]. I was just so married to that bottom it was just hard to deal with some of those lapped cars because I just couldn’t quite get a run on them like I needed. Then that bottom got so thin it made it even harder. Ricky had harder tires and was able to move out on the race track a little bit,” O’Neal shared. “Maybe I didn’t give it a fair enough shot. We have kind of been behind the eight-ball all week. We struggled to find our stride and I just felt like we just got better and better as the week along.”

Rocket1 Racing and Hudson O’Neal followed the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) to Lernerville Speedway (Sarver, Pa.) on Thursday evening to compete in a pair of prelims for the Firecracker 100 weekend.

After racing his way into his $5,000-to-win preliminary feature with a heat race victory, a steady rain shower forced officials to postpone both prelims to Friday afternoon.

Starting third on Friday, O’Neal faded late in the 25-lapper to finish fourth.

Later that night for another round of prelims, Hudson’s third-place finish in his heat positioned him on the fourth row for the A-Main. Breaking into the top-five, O’Neal jumped up three spots to place fifth.

With results from prelims placing him on the front row of his heat race on Saturday, O’Neal locked his spot into the $50,000-to-win Firecracker 100 with a second-place finish.

Rolling off 12th, Hudson was up to fourth by lap 14 and overtook Jonathan Davenport for second on lap 50. Taking part in a heated battle over the final 50 circuits, O’Neal led laps 53-56 and 71-74 but wasn’t able to hold off the red-hot Ricky Thornton Jr. in the 100-lap affair.

He ultimately chased Thornton to the checkers with Davenport, Gregg Satterlee, and Devin Moran rounding out the top-five.

Hudson remains second in the latest LOLMDS point standings.

Full results from the events are available at www.LucasDirt.com .

LOLMDS action continues for Rocket1 Racing this week with a visit to the Moran family-promoted Muskingum County Speedway (Zanesville, Ohio). The Freedom 60 weekend includes the field being divided into triple 20-lap $3,000-to-win features on Friday night followed by a $30,000-to-win finale on Saturday.

Dominic Scelzi Posts Trio of Top Fives During Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup

Inside Line Promotions - ALGER, Wash. (June 27, 2023) - Dominic Scelzi earned a top-five result during the Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup finale for the third straight year.

Scelzi capped a busy 10-day stretch throughout the Northwest on Saturday by winning the pole shuffle to garner the Dick Wilskey Pole Award for the $62,000-to-win main event at Skagit Speedway.

"I felt we were really efficient every night," he said. "On Saturday it was a little more top dominant and harder to race on than the two previous nights. The bottom wasn't the place to start the feature. It went green and we ended up not getting the start we hoped for. The top had a lot more grip so we fell to second. We ran the leader down and got to racing with him. Then a yellow came out. We did that again and the yellow came out. We did it a third time and a red came out. The second half of the race went green to checkered I believe. We were maintaining with the leader. About 10 laps to go we started to fade a bit. We got stuck behind a lapped car and got passed by two cars. It was definitely a good weekend, but I'd be lying if I said I was happy with the result. I've already got the 2024 Dirt Cup circled on my calendar. I'm ready to go back next year."

Scelzi was credited with a fourth-place result, which was his 15 th top five of the season. It also wrapped up a strong weekend at the high-banked oval, where he recorded a trio of top fives.

It began on Thursday when Scelzi timed in 11 th quickest out of more than 40 drivers. A run from sixth to third place in a heat race was followed by a charge from 10 th to fifth place in the main event.

"We went out kind of late and put down a good lap in qualifying," he said. "It was good to go from sixth to third in the heat race. In the main event the track was really racy with grip on the bottom and the top. We were able to move our way up to a top five."

Scelzi duplicated his success on Friday when he qualified seventh quickest and ended sixth in a heat race. The night concluded with Scelzi hustling from 13 th to third in the A Main to earn the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.

"We had a phenomenal race car," he said. "We could run the top, the bottom and the middle a little bit as well. Both preliminary nights we got better and did what we needed to do."

The three successful nights at Skagit Speedway was a nice rebound from how the previous weekend went during The Fastest Four Days in Motorsports with the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series.

Scelzi placed sixth on June 15 at Southern Oregon Speedway in Medford, Ore., where he was stymied by a flat tire in a heat race.

He was caught up in a crash in the feature the following night at Douglas County Dirt Track in Roseburg, Ore., where he ended with a 12th-place finish.

The highlight of the weekend was on June 17 at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore., where Scelzi garnered a third-place result.

That weekend concluded on June 18 at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash., where Scelzi's bid for a win ended early when he ran out of fuel while leading. He was credited with a 15th-place finish.

"I just have to laugh it off between the luck we had and some of the calls," he said. "Sometimes you're the bug and sometimes you're the windshield. It's unfortunate, but at the end of the day we've been on the other end of it. Our focus hasn't changed. We just want to win races."

The next opportunity for Scelzi is Saturday at Antioch Speedway in Antioch, Calif., with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour.

Hagar Hungry for Redemption After Winning Streak Snapped by Crash

Inside Line Promotions - WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (June 27, 2023) - Derek Hagar is coming off a wicked end to his nine-race winning streak that started the season.

Hagar advanced from third to win a heat race on June 17 at Riverside International Speedway. He started on the pole in the A Main and was leading early when a driver he was putting a lap down made contact. The impact slammed Hagar's race car into the frontstretch wall and started a vicious flip, ending his night early during the Greg Hodnett Memorial.

"The winning streak was definitely something to be proud of," he said. "Leading the race we were headed toward 10 in a row, but an unfortunate circumstance with a lapped car happened. Sometimes you're the bug and sometimes you're the windshield. It just didn't play out in our favor. It tore up the race car pretty good. It won't be ready by the weekend so we have to put a new car together."

Hagar plans to return to Riverside International Speedway this Saturday in search of redemption. It's the kickoff to a two-race weekend with the USCS Series.

"We'll just start over and go from there," he said. "We've proven we can do it. We just need to do it again. We want to beat our best season, which is 16 wins."

The weekend finale is Sunday at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss. His most recent triumph at the track came in July 2019. Hagar was also victorious there in 2018, 2017, 2014 and 2013.

"It's been an awesome track," he said. "It seems like we haven't been there in forever. I'm looking forward to heading back there. The fans are awesome. The race track is phenomenal and it's fun racing up against the fence."

Big Game Motorsports and Gravel Score Record $250,000 Top Prize for Capturing BillionAuto.com Huset's High Bank Nationals Presented by MENARDS Finale

Inside Line Promotions - BRANDON, S.D. (June 27, 2023) - Big Game Motorsports driver David Gravel produced one of the biggest moments of his career on Saturday when he captured the 2 nd annual BillionAuto.com Huset's High Bank Nationals presented by MENARDS.

The finale of the four-day World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series event at Huset's Speedway paid $250,000 - the largest winner's share in the history of winged sprint car racing.

"It still hasn't really set in," he said. "Winning the Knoxville Nationals is really prestigious and the Kings Royal is a really prestigious race. Now the High Bank Nationals is really prestigious. It's motivating to want to check off the big races off your list. It's Eldora now."

Gravel and the BillionAuto.com backed Big Game Motorsports team enjoyed the best week out of the 50-plus drivers throughout the crown jewel event as he recorded a top-five finish each night to extend his streak to seven straight races with a top five.

He set quick time during qualifying to open Wednesday's preliminary night. A seventh-place outing in a heat race was followed by a charge from 12 th to second in the A Main - the second-most positions gained.

"We had a lot of parity overall with the week," he said. "We qualified good and thought I had a good start in the heat race. Someone slid in front of me and I was seventh off turn two. I was able to start 12 th in the A Main and salvage the night by getting up to second. On the double-file restarts I was able to get through the middle and pass some cars."

Gravel timed in third quickest and powered from sixth to fourth in a heat race on Thursday. He hustled from seventh to second in the main event.

"I thought Thursday went a lot better for us," he said. "We qualified good for when we went out and heat raced better than we did the day before. We had a better car than the previous night and I had a lot confidence."

Friday was another efficient night as Gravel qualified third quickest again before placing fifth in both a heat race and the feature.

"Having a 20-point lead after the first two preliminary nights you think you've got a decent buffer," he said. "Our team had the mindset to test and tune a little bit, but we still had to attack because people could score more points. And with their worst night being thrown out drivers could still have two good nights overall like we did the first two nights. We changed some stuff in the heat race and weren't very good. We didn't have a good feature redraw and started seventh for the second straight night. The track was fast and we had a good car, but not as good as the night before."

Gravel ranked third in event points to miss locking into the King of the Hill event by only one spot. However, a dominating qualifier win on Saturday advanced him into the King of the Hill. He placed fourth in it to line up on the outside of the second row in the 40-lap A Main.

"We got through the qualifier with a decent start," he said. "It rained and then we did the King of the Hill. We probably should have been more in qualifying trim and we were in race trim. We were still really confident."

Gravel quickly maneuvered into the runner-up position on the opening lap. He raced in that spot throughout the first half of the feature before dropping to third for a few laps. Gravel rallied back into second place just prior to a caution when the leader dropped out of the race because of mechanical woes. That gave Gravel the lead with 10 laps remaining.

"We were able to jump to second right away," he said. "I tried to pace myself and go easy and conserve my stuff. When Logan (Schuchart) got by me I had to turn the wick back up. That cost me with Buddy (Kofoid) getting a lead on us. With 10 laps to go he blew up. Who would have known if we could have caught up, but I felt I had more in the tank and could have pushed harder.

"It was definitely a good feeling because it was a single-file restart. That ended up being perfect for me. It was one of those things that felt good and I was confident in what we had to be able to win it."

Gravel mostly stayed committed to the cushion around the high-banked track as he led the remainder of the race en route to the prestigious triumph - his seventh total win of the year.

"It was just relief, happiness, with everybody there," he said. "With being at Tod's track with the Billion Automotive guys there. Jill was there. Levi was there. My parents were there. It was a great feeling, the stuff you dream about and strive for."

Stormy Scott Breaks Through with $10,000 Summer Nationals Win at I-55
Johnny Scott Records Trio of Top-10 Finishes

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (06/27/22) – Executing a third-to-first maneuver on the final circuit, Stormy Scott raced to the $10,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory on Saturday night at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 aboard his Rancho Milagro Racing No. 2s Mesilla Valley Transportation/ Longhorn Chassis/ Clements Racing Engines Super Late Model.

Not only was the five-figure payday his first win of the year but it was also Stormy’s first-career DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory.

"I felt like the longer we went with that run, them running that top, they were getting their tires hotter and hotter," Stormy Scott said. "At one point, they drove away just a tad, but I just kept cool and tried keeping my tires cool. They started coming back to me and I knew that if we go (without a late caution) and hit that bottom (in turn four) and not mess up, that I at least had a shot. Everything worked out and we got the win.

“This team has been giving it our all, and while our results haven’t showed it until Saturday night, we’ve had a really good car. We’re excited for the second half of the season.”

Stormy Scott unloaded his Rancho Milagro Racing No. 2s Late Model at Brownstown Bullring (Brownstown, Ill.) on Friday afternoon for the eighth round of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals.

With 48 Late Models crammed into the pit area, Scott outdueled fellow front-row starter Frank Heckenast Jr. in his heat race to pick up the 10-lap victory. Starting the $10,000-to-win A-Main in sixth, Stormy jumped up two spots in the 50-lap affair to register a fourth-place finish. He chased Jason Feger, Billy Moyer, and Shannon Babb to the checkers with Billy Moyer Jr. coming in fifth.

On Saturday evening at Federated Raceway at I-55 (Pevely, Mo.), Stormy timed in third-fastest in his group before placing second in his heat. Starting the feature in fifth, Scott was up to third by the halfway point and began closing in on front-runners Ashton Winger and Drake Troutman on the bottom as they battled the cushion.

Going from third-to-first on the final lap, Stormy raced to his first win of the 2023 season and first career Hell Tour triumph. He bagged a $10,000 payday 0.224 seconds ahead of Ashton Winger with Drake Troutman, Frank Heckenast Jr., and Jason Feger rounding out the top-five.

Meanwhile, consistency was the word of the weekend for Johnny Scott, who wheeled the Rancho Milagro No 1st to three top-ten finishes with the World of Outlaws CASE Late Models at 81 Speedway and Off Road Speedway.

Opening things Friday, June 23, at 81-Speedway, going ninth to seventh in the opening of the split A-Features, Saturday, June 24 saw a repeat performance from ninth to seventh against the entire field.

Norfolk, Neb. and Off Road Speedway on Sunday, June 25, A-Feature advancement was the same as two previous nights, with the difference being a run from tenth to eighth.
