Hudson O’Neal and Rocket1 Win $15,000 WoO Sunshine Nationals Finale
Set to Open LOLMDS 2024 Campaign this Weekend at Golden Isles Speedway
SHINNSTON, W.Va. (01/22/24) – One year after beginning their season with struggles at Volusia Speedway Park, Hudson O’Neal and Rocket1 Racing flipped the tables with a triumphant start to the 2024 campaign at the Florida oval.
Hudson drove the team’s Valvoline / Seubert Calf Ranches No. 1 Ace Metal Works / Performance Grading / Fox Shocks / XR1 Rocket Chassis / Durham Racing Engine Super Late Model to the $15,000 victory in Saturday’s Sunshine Nationals finale with the World of Outlaws (WoO) Case Late Model Series.
“It’s ironic,” O’Neal said. “If anybody remembers my first outing with Rocket1 and how bad it was at Sunshine Nationals one year ago. Then, to turn around and come back and have a good showing like we did (tonight). I think we had a critical test session here last year, came back and got to make a lot of laps and it helped a lot. I don’t know, I think I’ve found something that I’m comfortable with and something that this place likes,” O’Neal said. “We’re just happy to be in contention and we are so far ahead of where we started last year and hopefully we can go to Speedweeks and win a few more.”
With Thursday’s opener falling to persistent rain, Rocket1 Racing and Hudson O’Neal kicked off the 2024 season on Friday afternoon at Volusia Speedway Park (De Leon Springs, Fla.) for the fifth annual DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals.
Joined by a stacked field of 55 Late Models, O’Neal raced into the opener with a consolation victory after missing a transfer spot by one car in his heat. Climbing six spots in the 35-lap feature, Hudson rolled to a 13th-place finish.
Improving on his qualifying effort on Saturday, Hudson backed up the fifth-fastest time in his group with a convincing, flag-to-flag victory in his heat race.
Outrunning Friday night’s winner and fellow front-row starter Devin Moran in the feature, O’Neal stole the top spot from Moran on lap 27 and led the final 14 circuits to secure the $15,000 victory. After leading laps 1-14 and 20-21, Hudson regained the lead for good on lap 27 and went onto capture Rocket1’s first win of the season ahead of Kyle Bronson, Devin Moran, Ricky Thornton Jr. and Brandon Sheppard.

Hudson now turns his attention to the start of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) season, which opens this Thursday – Saturday at Golden Isles Speedway (Brunswick, Ga.) with the General Tire Super Bowl of Racing. O’Neal begins his title defense with three complete programs. Thursday’s event posts a $10,000 top prize, while $12,000 is up for grabs on Friday, and a $25,000 winner’s check is on the line for Saturday.

Matt Henderson Collects Sunshine Nationals Finale and Championship
East Bay Winternationals Await this Week
LOUDON, Tenn. (01/22/24) – Matt Henderson raced the Rusty Webb Racing / Tennessee Shine Co. No. 22 R&W Properties / Fox Racing Shox / C&C Steam Cleaning / Vision Wheel / CVR Race Car Late Model to the $10,000 Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout Series win on Saturday night at Florida’s Volusia Speedway Park.
With the victory Henderson also claimed the DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals title at the ½-mile oval.
“We had a different tire than most people and I just had to get going. Those cautions were killing me,” Henderson said. “I got to race my buddy Will Roland. We raced tight and rubbed on each other a little bit, but that’s what you gotta do when everybody’s got these small motors. You just don’t have an advantage to get away.
“To win the finale in my first time ever at Volusia (Speedway Park) is pretty awesome. It says a lot about this team. We’re looking forward to heading to East Bay (Raceway Park) this week to see if we can keep this momentum rolling. I can’t thank all of our sponsors enough for supporting us and letting us get away to showcase them on our cars. Thank you to everyone who has been following along on the trip too. We love all of them.”
With heavy rains washing out the Thursday night opener, Matt Henderson unloaded his Rusty Webb Racing No. 22 CVR Race Car on Friday afternoon at Volusia Speedway Park (De Leon Springs, Fla.) for the fifth-annual Sunshine Nationals.
Among 69 Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout Late Models checked in for the weekend, Henderson qualified 16th-fastest in his group, which landed him in the second preliminary feature on the fourth-row. Moving forward five positions in the quick 20-lap race, Matt earned a spot on the podium in third.
With heat race lineups already set for Saturday, Matt started second and finished second in his heat which placed him on the third-row for the A-Main.
Looking for his first triumph of the young season, Henderson made quick work of his competitors and moved into the Top-3 by lap 10. Battling with the lead duo for most of the 30-lap feature, Matt took advantage of a late-race restart to power through the inside lane to score the $10,000 triumph. Henderson outran Caleb Gay and Trynt Lloyd to the checkered flag who completed the Top-3 finishers.
With the win Henderson claimed the Sunshine Nationals Championship and currently leads the Crate Racin' USA Winter Series point standings.

Pierce McCarter Powers to 602 Sunshine Nationals Triumph and Title
MBR Rolls into East Bay Raceway Park this Thursday - Saturday
GATLINBURG, Tenn. (01/22/24) – Pierce McCarter piloted the Jim Beeman Lumber / West End Package Store / McCarter Brothers Racing No. 71 Tennessee Homemade Wines / Parkway Liquor Store / MasterSbilt Race Car Late Model to the $3,000 victory in the 602 Late Model feature in Saturday evening’s Sunshine Nationals finale at Volusia Speedway Park.
The Tennessee racer surged to the lead in the closing laps of the finale to snare his first victory of the 2024 campaign along with the DIRTcar 602 Sunshine Nationals championship.
“The restart before the last one, I hit the top in (turns) one and two pretty good but I went over the crest – there’s a little ridge right there in the middle of the corner – and I got lucky that the caution came out, and I knew I wouldn’t make that mistake again. So, on the next restart this MasterSbilt stuck right in the middle, and we got to the lead and the win. This past week and really this past month has been such a rollercoaster. We’ve been fast all week but never could complete more than 10 laps until tonight, so to be here means so much,” McCarter said in Victory Lane. “I can’t say enough about Tader and Jerilyn Masters and my whole team and family for standing behind me. Last but definitely not least, I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I wouldn’t be here without him, and he gives me the strength to get up every morning.”
While heavy rains washed out the Thursday night opener, Pierce and Mack McCarter kicked off the Sunshine Nationals weekend on Friday afternoon at Volusia Speedway Park (De Leon Springs, Fla.) in both the Super Late Model and 602 Late Model divisions.
Topping the 602 Late Model charts, Pierce earned a spot in the first preliminary feature where he would go on to finish third.
For Saturday's 602 show, Pierce fell back in his heat race which relegated him to a fourth-row starting spot in the 20-lap feature. Inching into the Top-3 with a few laps left before the final caution, Pierce utilized the late-race restart to propel himself from third-to-first with just two laps to go. McCarter kept Bubba Roling and Mario Gresham at bay till the checkered flag dropped and he collected $3,000 for his efforts.
In World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series competition, Mack was unable to crack the A-Main both evenings with a 13th-place outing in Friday's B-Main and just barely missing the cut-off in Saturday's Last Chance Showdown with a third-place finish.
Full results from the weekend can be found at www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.com and www.WorldOfOutlaws.com .
McCarter Brothers Racing is now swapping the 602 crate engine out of Pierce’s entry in favor of a 604 crate engine as they prepare for three nights of Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout action at East Bay Raceway Park (Gibsonton, Fla.). On Thursday and Friday competitors will vie for a $2,500 winner’s check each night, while Saturday’s finale posts a $5,000 top prize.

Cameron Weaver and Henderson Motorsports Join Forces for ‘24
Plans to Pursue Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series Rookie Title
CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (01/22/24) – Cameron Weaver is excited to announce that he’s joined forces with Mississippi-based Henderson Motorsports.
Weaver will be at the steering wheel of the team’s L&D Trucking No. 116 Longhorn Chassis / Cornett Thunder Racing Engine Super Late Model.
“This is a great opportunity, and I can’t thank the Henderson family enough. The team won a championship last year (COMP Cams Super Dirt Series) with Billy (Moyer Jr.) and now with him heading a different direction with his plans, it opened up the driver’s seat, and I’m so very appreciative of the Henderson family offering me this great opportunity,” Weaver said. “We’re likely going to go after the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series Rookie of the Year title this year. It’s definitely a new direction for me because I’ve never run a full season of Super Late Model racing, and I’ve never chased a point deal either.
“Again, I just can’t say enough how appreciative I am. I’m ready to get the season going.”
Henderson Motorsports’ home base will continue to be in Laurel, Miss. with veteran crew chief Robert Wayne Baker running the day-to-day operations.
“We had a great year with (Billy) Moyer Jr. in 2023. We won some races and won the COMP Cams (Super Dirt Series) title. Billy let us know at the end of last year that he wanted to focus on some new things for 2024, and we wish him nothing but the absolute best. He’s like family to us,” Leon Henderson shared. “We knew that we wanted to keep the race team going full speed ahead. Randy and Cameron Weaver have been great friends to us for several years now. Cameron has a ton of talent, and he was our first choice when the seat opened up. We couldn’t be happier to have him on board, and we look forward to kicking the season off in a month or so.”
The team is currently set to make their first start of 2024 on March 15-16 at Talladega (Ala.) Short Track in a doubleheader with the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series. Friday’s program posts a $5,000 top prize, while Saturday’s finale boasts a $15,000 winner’s check.
