Heartbreak for Hudson O’Neal in NAPA Auto Parts Gopher 50 Finale
Four-Race Week Up Next for Rocket1 Racing Team
SHINNSTON, W.Va. (07/10/23) – Hudson O’Neal came up painfully short of his first-career NAPA Auto Parts Gopher 50 triumph on Saturday night. In fact, after leading 39 circuits he finished a mere 0.002 seconds behind Bobby Pierce for the win aboard his Rocket1 Racing / Valvoline / Seubert Calf Ranches No. 1 Ace Metal Works / XR1 Rocket Chassis / Durham Racing Engine Super Late Model.
“I knew I had a good enough lead, and the top was so dominate. I knew if I didn’t mess up that I was probably going to have it and that’s exactly what I did. I was going down the front straightaway and thought about it too much and I don’t know it’s the biggest heartbreak I have ever had in my life. I don’t really have any words. I definitely gave one away,” O’Neal shared in a post-race interview. “In this big of a race to be leading and in that position, you don’t get those very often. I don’t hate it for me, I hate it for my team. We’ve had a good race car and I felt like we had potential there and every time we got on the racetrack, we would get a little bit better and better. We had a heck of a hot rod all weekend.”
Continuing their pursuit for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) championship, Rocket1 Racing and Hudson O’Neal trekked to Deer Creek Speedway (Spring Valley, Minn.) on Thursday for the opening round of the NAPA Auto Parts Gopher 50 weekend.
After contact with another competitor in his heat race relegated him into a B-Main, O’Neal raced his way into the opening night preliminary feature with a ninth-to-third run. Chasing a $5,000 payday, Hudson advanced forward 14 spots in the 25-lapper to register a seventh-place finish.
In Friday’s $5,000-to-win prelim event, Hudson started the 25-lapper in seventh via a runner-up finish in his heat and went onto improve one position to place sixth.
With results from preliminary features on Thursday and Friday setting the grid for Saturday’s $50,000-to-win NAPA Auto Parts Gopher 50, O’Neal slid ahead of early pacesetter Chris Madden on lap 37 to assume command of the lead.
After holding the top spot for the ensuing 37 circuits, Hudson was overtaken by Bobby Pierce coming to the checkers in a thrilling photo finish.
He finished .002 seconds behind Pierce with Brandon Sheppard, Chris Madden, and Jonathan Davenport completing the top-five finishers.
Hudson continues to sit second in the latest LOLMDS point standings.
Full results from the event are available at www.LucasDirt.com .
The team looks to bounce back this week with a quartet of events in Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri. On Monday night the team will enter a $20,000-to-win XR Super Series event at Dubuque (Iowa) Speedway. Tuesday evening finds the team back in action with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway in a $10,000-to-win program before entering a $12,000-to-win LOLMDS event at Tri-City Speedway (Pontoon Beach, Ill.) on Friday and the $15,000-to-win Diamond Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway (Wheatland, Mo.) on Saturday.

Ashton Winger Notches Pair of DIRTcar Summer Nationals Victories
Ready to Rock with Final Week of Miniseries Competition
HAMPTON, Ga. (07/10/23) – Ashton Winger bagged a pair of DIRTcar Summer Nationals triumphs last week in his Jeff Mathews Motorsports No. 12 Johnny Doan Plumbing / Recreational Vehicle Select / XR1 Rocket Chassis / Durham Racing Engine Super Late Model.
He charged to the lead late for the $7,500 triumph at Lake Cumberland Speedway on Monday night, while Saturday’s victory found him surviving mechanical damage to his No. 12 entry at Highland Speedway to persevere for the $10,000 victory. He also claimed $10,000 for his Southern Week DIRTcar Summer Nationals point title.
“Our car came to life there late at Lake Cumberland (Speedway), and we go to the lead and got the win. We had a fast car the rest of the week and survived a messed-up left front at Highland (Speedway) to get the win,” Winger shared. “We’re focused on closing the Summer Nationals out on a high note this week. It’s been a great ride so far, and thanks as always to everyone who supports this program and makes it all possible.”
Ashton Winger began last week’s action by unloading his Mathews Motorsports No. 12 machine at Lake Cumberland Speedway (Burnside, Ky.) on Monday afternoon to finish off the third week of DIRTcar Summer Nationals competition.
Following the fastest-lap in qualifying, Ashton picked up the victory in his heat race which placed him on the front-row of the 40-lap main event. With a $7,500 payday on the line, Winger ran in second behind Tyler Clem before making a late move around the race-long leader to score his fourth Hell Tour victory of the season. He topped Tyler Clem, Billy Moyer Jr., Greg Johnson, and Brenden Smith who completed the Top-5.
The victory secured Winger's points lead and he pocketed $10,000 in the "Southern Week" standings for the third week of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals.
With a highly-successful third week on the Hell Tour in his rearview mirror, Ashton Winger made the haul back to the Midwest at Tri-City Speedway (Granite City, Ill.) on Tuesday to kick off the "Mid State Week" of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals.
Nabbing the final transfer spot in his heat race, Winger started the $5,000-to-win feature from the sixth-row and charged forward eight positions to land inside the Top 5 in fourth.
With Wednesday's event rained out, Ashton turned his focus to Thursday's Herald and Review 100 at Macon Speedway (Macon, Ill.). With $7,500 on the line in the special 100-lap feature, Winger powered his way into the Top 5 but faded late to finish seventh.
Invading Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway on Friday evening, Ashton earned a front-row starting position after picking up the victory in his heat race. For the first $10,000-to-win show of the week, Winger recorded a fifth-place outing behind race-winner Brian Shirley, Ryan Unzicker, Tanner English, and Dennis Erb Jr. who made up the Top-5.
Among 37 Late Models at Highland Speedway (Highland, Ill.) on Saturday, Ashton raced his way into the 40-lap feature with a victory in his heat race. Starting the feature from the front row, Winger led the first 10 laps before engaging in a back-and-forth with Shannon Babb.
After out-running Shannon Babb, Ashton faced a challenge from Mike Harrison which left his left-front suspension bent for the final 15 laps of the A-Main. Rolling the bottom for the remainder of the race, Ashton regained the lead with just three laps remaining to score the hard-earned $10,000 payday, which marked his eighth win of the year.
Wrapping up the third week of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals at Tri-State Speedway (Haubstadt, Ind.) on Sunday evening, Winger topped his qualifying group before finishing runner-up in his heat race. For the final A-Main of the week, Ashton recorded a fourth-place outing.
Ashton finished second behind Jason Feger in the "Mid State Week" point standings.

By Fully Injected Motorsports:
GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. (July 10, 2023) - Another Knoxville Raceway start resulted in another Knoxville Raceway victory for Brian Brown and Brian Brown Racing, and although the Higginsville, Missouri, native is certainly no stranger to the Sprint Car Capital of the World, his recent open wheel triumph sticks out above the rest, accomplishing his eventual feat from the outside of row four. For Brown, the Knoxville Mid-Season Championship victory bumped his career total to 64 at the Speedway, four of which occurring during the 2023 season.
As noted, Brown, ace of the Brian Brown Racing, Casey’s, FVP, Andy's Frozen Custard, Impact Signs Awnings and Wraps, Mt. Dew Overdrive, HAWK Hunting, Ditzfeld Transfer, No. 21 sprint car, started eighth on Saturday’s grid, driving forward in a hurry before taking command from Lynton Jeffrey on lap eight. Impressive enough, Brown was up to third by lap three, taking second the very next circuit.
Brown’s preliminary effort was just as impressive, kicking off Knoxville’s program with the fastest qualifying time, racing on to finish second during heat race competition.
“Overall, just a great effort. Came out late and set quick time, then finished second in the heat. Ended up drawing an eight for the feature, which made me a little nervous considering the company we were with. But we were able to get moving in a hurry, take the lead and set sail,” Brian Brown said. “I like where our team is. Everyone is doing a phenomenal job and I feel like we’re in a great spot. We’re all excited to get to Eldora. Of course there’s a lot of money on the line, but it’s one of my favorite tracks. We’re going to do what we can to be consistent and be disciplined. The sky's the limit for what we can accomplish.”
ON DECK:
Brian Brown and Brian Brown Racing will continue their 2023 campaign with the biggest week in sprint car racing, set to invade Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, for four straight days on Wednesday through Saturday, July 12-15. In consecutive fashion, Eldora will host the Eldora Million preliminary on Wednesday, the $1,002,023-to-win Eldora Million on Thursday, the Knight Before the Kings Royal on Friday, and the $175,000-to-win 40th Kings Royals on Saturday.

Mallett Posts Podium During Steve King Memorial Finale at Dodge City Raceway Park
Inside Line Promotions - DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 10, 2023) - Jordon Mallett capped the Steve King Memorial with a podium performance last Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park.
That result, combined with a sixth-place run on Friday, gives Mallett 10 top 10s in his last 11 ASCS National Tour races.
"I was pleased overall," he said. "We worked at it pretty hard. We were pretty strong every time we hit the track."
The doubleheader started on Friday with Mallett qualifying fifth quickest in his group.
"We felt really good in hot laps," he said. "Then in qualifying we got bunched up and that really killed our qualifying time. We went from quickest in hot laps by a good margin to qualifying fifth in our group. I couldn't get around the car in front of me and was at their pace. That was disappointing, but we knew we had a better car than that. We were able to pass a couple of cars in the heat race to get to third. However, if you miss the invert in qualifying you'll likely miss the invert for the feature."
Mallett's run from fifth to third place in a heat race placed him ninth in points, starting him ninth on the feature starting grid.
"The track was really hard to pass on," he said. "We clawed forward to finish sixth. I was really trying to get us into the top five, but couldn't quite get there in time."
Saturday started out better as Mallett timed in quickest in his group before advancing from fourth to third place in a heat race.
"Qualifying went as planned," he said. "We were quick time in our group and then ran third in our heat race. That put us high points and I pulled the No. 4 for the feature invert so we started fourth. The track was really fast and heavy, which made passing tough. Every time we'd get into traffic it'd get good. We needed traffic to start racing because we were too strung out in open air. We had some cautions that plagued that. But I'll take a podium."
Mallett's third-place showing was his third podium and seventh top five of the season.
ASCS National Tour races this Friday at Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee, Okla., and Saturday at Batesville Motor Speedway in Locust Grove, Ark., are on tap. Friday will mark Mallett's debut at Thunderbird Speedway. He placed fourth at Batesville Motor Speedway last summer during his most recent visit.

2023 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Standings: 8th | 4622 points
By Fully Injected Motorsports:
CARLISLE, Pa. (July 10, 2023) - Although the weekend was ultimately cut in half due to Mother Nature’s inability to cooperate on Friday at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, the show went on as scheduled Saturday evening at Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wisconsin, welcoming the Greatest Show On Dirt for the Larry Hillerud Memorial Badger 40.
The Badger State visit, the last of the year for the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, would see Spencer Bayston and CJB Motorsports continue their consistent streak, capping the evening with a ninth-place score after starting eighth on the A-Main grid.
Bayston’s top-ten at Wilmot bumped his season total to 25, now three-for-three in his last three Wisconsin starts stretching back to Cedar Lake Speedway’s Independence Day Spectacular that concluded with the Lebanon, Indiana, native finishing fifth and second.
“I wish we could have raced both days, but we certainly made the most of our weekend on Saturday. We had some great speed early on, but as the night progressed, the track got more and more technical and some of our speed fell off,” Bayston, ace of the TrueTimber Camo, Rothco, JRC Transportation, Nyce Crete and Landis, Ecynbro Trucking, C&S Lawn and Landscape, Kistler Engines, Highlands’ Power Sports, High Performance Lubricants, No. 5 sprint car, expressed. “Overall, I’m pleased with our performance. We’ve been really good these last few weeks and we’re all chomping at the bit to get this CJB Motorsports No. 5 at the top of the podium. No better time than right now, that’s for sure.”
