Michael Chilton Grabs Richmond Raceway Southern All Star Win

RACE RECAP: RICHMOND, KY--The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by Max Fab made its first ever visit to the “Beast of the East” Richmond Raceway Saturday night for the Mike Roland Memorial and the near capacity crowd got to see a very entertaining race as Michael Chilton of Salvisa, KY., got his second career Southern All Star win.

Chilton started on the pole but it was far from easy as he had to hold off several challenges and then work the lapped traffic on the 3/8th miles track throughout the night.  Chilton’s first challenge came early as John Ownbey jumped to the top side of the track at the start and was side by side with Chilton after one lap then on the second lap Ownbey spun in turn three and four sending him back to the rear of the field hurting his chances for a win.  Chilton who was staying the bottom groove had to hold off the next challenge of four time Southern All Star Champion Riley Hickman who was on the top and brining the crowd to their feet as he looked like he may take over the top spot rom Chilton but in turn three Hickman slammed the wall knocking the rear spoiler off and ending his attempt at the win.  Then Chilton had one more challenge late in the race as Jackie Boggs was looking at the top and worked his way to the second spot from his 12th starting spot but could never get the car to work on top late in the race so he settled for the second place finish.  Third went to Zack Dohm form his 8th starting spot, fourth to David Breazeale who took back over the points lead and fifth place went to Jason Jameson who was in an early race crash and fought his way back for a top five finish.

Justin Ratliff finished in the sixth spot, Billy Franklin came home seventh, Derek Fisher was eighth, and ninth place went to Zach Leonhardi and tenth went to Josh Hall.

RACE TIDBITS: This was the first appearance of the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series at the Richmond Raceway and marks the 5th series appearance in the state of Kentucky.
The Southern All Stars also would like to thank the Bill Lupinos family and his entire staff and crew with the help and hospitality for the weekend and we look forward to returning for the Mike Roland memorial in 2020.

The weekend was supposed to be a doubleheader but Mother Nature had different story as on Friday night a huge thunderstorm soaked the area about an hour before race time forcing officials to cancel the $3,000 to win event.

Jackie Boggs ran his first Southern All Star race in 15 years as the last race he competed in was in 2004 at the dirt track at Charlotte Motor Speedway when he was involved in crash that broke his ankle.

Riley Hickman was running the high of the track and was zeroing in on leader Chilton until he slapped the wall in turn three ending his night but he did pick up quite a few fans in Kentucky with the run.

First time starts with the series this year Michael Chilton, Jackie Boggs, Zack Dohm, Jason Jameson, Justin Ratliff, Derek Fisher, Josh Hall, Shawn Martin, Kirk Phillip, Cody Mahoney, Daniel Shelton, Camaron Marlar, John Ownbey, Jonathon Couch, Conner Meade, and Danny Barrett.
