Ross Bailes Wins Lucas Oil Late Model Stop at Cherokee Speedway
Last Lap Pass Lifts Big Frog Motorsports Driver to $12,000 Payday

OCALA, Fla. (06/16/20) – In just his fourth start for aboard the M&W Transport No. 58 Dave’s Towing/ Rocket Chassis/ Clements Racing Engine Super Late Model, Ross Bailes earned the Florida-based Big Frog Motorsports their first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory.

Taking advantage of Brandon Overton’s deflating right-rear tire on the final lap, Bailes soared to the lead down the backstretch to earn a $12,000 victory in Friday’s 22nd Annual Grassy Smith Memorial at Cherokee Speedway (Gaffney, S.C.).

“Man, this is unbelievable. We have been through a lot this year. I am so excited to win this in front of my home crowd. I mean it can’t get any better than that,” said the 30-year-old racer in Victory Lane amid a packed grandstand.

After topping the speed charts in the 37-car field, Bailes cruised to a heat race victory, locking him into the main event.

Rolling off on the front row alongside Chris Ferguson, Ross set the pace for the first 22 circuits before dropping back to second behind Overton. Regaining the lead a few laps later, Bailes commanded the top spot for the next 18 laps but was closing in on lapped traffic. Overton returned to the point on lap 46.

A caution with 48 laps complete set up a dash to the finish. On the restart, Overton had control of the race until his car suddenly slowed exiting turn two on the final lap. Bailes drove by and went on to his second career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win.

“The car was better than the driver. I just didn’t know what to do in lapped traffic and he [Overton] had the advantage of being behind me and seeing where he needed to go. Overton had a good car too; he probably has the best car in the country right now and we were right there with him. I hate what happened to Brandon, but luckily, I was on the good end of that one at the finish. This is the first Lucas Oil win for Auggie [Burttram], and I wanted to get in his car and prove we could do it. He has as good of equipment as you can get. This is the first night out on a new car and we had a rebuilt Clements engine.”

Full results from the event are available at www.LucasDirt.com .

The following night at Friendship Motor Speedway (Elkin, N.C.) for the Ultimate Southeast Series-sanctioned program, Ross laid down the fastest time in his group, which positioned him second on the starting grid for the $4,000-to-win A-Main.

Holding his spot for all 40-laps, Bailes posted a runner-up finish behind Zack Mitchell with G.R. Smith, Cla Knight, and Pearson Lee Williams rounding out the Top-5.

Brandon Overton Pockets $15,000 at Smoky Mountain
World of Outlaws Doubleheader On Deck

EVANS, Ga. (06/16/20) – Brandon Overton held off several challenges in a furious finish on Saturday to put the Wells Motorsports No. 76 Crossfit Overton/ Allstar Concrete/ Longhorn Chassis by Wells/ Clements Racing Engine-powered Super Late Model in Victory Lane for the fourth straight week.

Overton held off a hard charging Brandon Sheppard, Jimmy Owens, and Josh Richards in the closing laps to win the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Mountain Moonshine Classic at Smoky Mountain Speedway (Maryville, Tenn.). He earned a $15,000 payday for his third LOLMDS win of the season.

“I just wanted the race to be done,” said Overton in Victory Lane. “I didn’t know where they were at. I saw so many people on that backstretch some were saying go high or go low and I did not know where to go. I could see him [Sheppard] on the bottom, but I am just fortunate to drive for an awesome group of people. We have had a lot of bad luck, and we have got a fast race car. Thank you to all the fans for coming out tonight. I was excited to see all these people here especially on the backstretch, it’s awesome to come here and see all of these fans. If I am going to win one, it’s great do this in front this crowd. If the fans don’t come see us then we don’t have a job.”

Brandon followed up the second fastest time in his group behind Sheppard with a heat race win. Starting the feature in third, Overton powered ahead of Sheppard on lap 27 and fended off several late-race charges to capture his ninth win of the season. Sheppard, Owens, Josh, and Earl Pearson Jr. completed the Top-5 finishers in the 60-lap affair.

Overton invaded Cherokee Speedway (Gaffney, S.C.) on Friday evening powering his Wells Motorsports No. 76 Late Model in the 22nd Annual Grassy Smith Memorial. Overton secured his spot into the feature with a 10-lap heat race victory.

Rolling off third, Brandon tracked down Ross Bailes for the lead on lap 22 before relinquishing the top spot back to Bailes five laps later. Charging ahead of Bailes on lap 46, Overton looked to have the win secured until a caution appeared on lap 49. Suffering a flat tire on the final lap, Brandon limped across the finish line in fourth, trailing Bailes, Sheppard, and Owens to the checkers with Chris Ferguson coming in fifth.

Before ending his Friday night outing on the hook, Abreu lined-up third on the main event grid, earning his way into the 25-lap Knoxville Raceway preliminary with a heat race victory.

There were 53 cars on hand for the Knoxville Raceway double.

“That’s not how we wanted to end our night on Friday, but we had a lot of speed so we were anxious to get back and redeem ourselves on Saturday,” Rico Abreu said, driver of the Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing/Abreu Vineyards/Curb Records/Lucas Oil Products/Salty’s BBQ/Self Made Racing/Dancer Logistics/ShopRico.com/No. 24 sprint car. “I can’t thank my team enough for all of their hard work. BROWNSBURG, Ind. (June 16, 2020) - Just as demanding as it was competitive, Tony Stewart and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing wrapped-up the 2020 edition of Thunder Through The Plains with a slew of impressive statistics, collecting four top-ten finishes in eight races highlighted with a fifth-place run at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas, on June 7.

Stewart’s All Star run through the Central Time Zone also included an eighth-place finish at Monarch Motor Speedway on June 12, as well as a pair of seventh-place finishes at Lonestar Speedway and Chatham Speedway on Saturday and Sunday, June 13-14, respectively. Padding the stat book, the Columbus, Indiana-native also earned Hard Charger Award honors twice during Thunder Through The Plains; 20th to 12th at Lawton on June 8 and 14th to seventh at Chatham on June 14. Although not earning the Hard Charger Award, Stewart’s eighth-place result at Monarch was the product of row ten.

Although retiring early and scored 23rd, Stewart started on the pole for the 40-lapper at Red Dirt Raceway on June 5, winning the evening’s dash to do so. An ill timed entry in turn one during the opening laps caused Stewart to lose several spots, eventually making his way pit-side.

Smoke concluded the demanding stretch tenth in the final Thunder Through The Plains standings.

“I think it was a pretty successful week. Anytime you can put up positive results against a talented group like the All Stars says a lot about your team. All we can do now is continue to find ways to improve and hopefully get back up front,” Tony Stewart said, driver of the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Rush Truck Centers/Advance Auto Parts/Mobil 1/Ford Performance/Curb Records/Sage Fruit/FloRacing/Carquest/TechNet Professional Automotive Service/Hunt Brothers Pizza/Absolute Automation & Security/Digital Ally/J&J Auto Racing/No. 14 sprint car. “Hopefully we have the opportunity to return to that area of the country and try again.”

Tony Stewart’s upcoming plans have not yet been determined. Any news regarding Smoke’s racing agenda will be posted online in the coming days.

Dominic Scelzi Finds Speed, Consistency and Victory Lane During All Star Thunder Through the Plains

Inside Line Promotions - CHATHAM, La. (June 15, 2020) - Dominic Scelzi capitalized on a busy two-week stretch with the Ollie's Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1.

Scelzi earned five top fives, won the finale and finished fifth in the Cometic Gasket Thunder Through the Plains presented by Hercules Tires standings after participating in eight races during that span.

"To be honest I think the speedweek was the perfect thing we needed," he said. "We needed to race a lot in a short amount of time at a lot of tracks. At the beginning of the week we weren't there. We'd click off a lap in hot laps and then wouldn't time in well. The last half of the week I feel like we were the best car."

That showed on Sunday at Chatham Speedway during the Thunder Through the Plains finale. Scelzi qualified third quickest, placed fourth in a heat race, charged from sixth to second place in the dash and then led 32 of the 40-lap main event for his first career win with the series.

"It's right up there with winning the World Challenge for me," he said. "It's something I didn't think would be possible. To win with the All Stars, it's an elite group of guys. I feel like it's harder now than it's ever been to win an All Star race. The level of competition is tremendous. It's something I'll never forget."

The victory capped four straight nights of top-five runs for Scelzi beginning last Thursday at Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla.

"I felt pretty good, but I couldn't tell where we were at in qualifying," he said. "I felt like we were going to be all right though. We won the heat and were pretty good in the dash. In the main event I think I gave the race away by not getting to the top fast enough. I got flustered, but got my head back down and kept fighting. It's a good feeling when you roll around well like that."

Scelzi led his first career All Star laps before finishing third.

The team posted a fifth-place result on Friday at Monarch Motor Speedway in Wichita Falls, Texas, and a third-place run on Saturday at LoneStar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, prior to the big win. Additionally, Scelzi finished 16th at Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker, Okla., on June 5; recorded a fourth-place outing at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., on June 7; placed 14th at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla., on June 8; and earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars after driving from 20th to 13th at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, last Wednesday.

"I think you can always get better," he said. "I think the biggest thing is cutting down on mistakes. I've done that this week. If we want to get to that next level of winning a World of Outlaws race, those mistakes can't happen. I think we're pretty close."

Scelzi plans on heading back to his home state of California this week to drive for Roth Motorsports on Saturday at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford during the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series season opener.

Kerry Madsen Earns Two Top 10s During World of Outlaws Event at Knoxville

Inside Line Promotions - KNOXVILLE, Iowa (June 15, 2020) - Big Game Motorsports driver Kerry Madsen picked up a pair of top-10 finishes last weekend during the Brownells Big Guns Bash.

The Killer Instinct Crossbows backed team placed 10th on Friday and seventh on Saturday during the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series doubleheader at Knoxville Raceway.

"It's acceptable I guess," Madsen said. "On Friday we drew late to qualify and were ninth quickest in our group. We were really good in the heat and got up to third (from fifth)."

That lined Madsen up on the outside of the fifth row for the main event.

"We were coming on strong in the A Main," he said. "I think we were up to sixth. Something weird happened in the car. It turns out the left rear shock had a problem so we hung on for 10th. It was holding the thing down so it made it extremely loose and hard to hang on to."

Madsen was battling for a top five before the late problem dropped him to a 10th-place result.

The weekend wrapped up on Saturday. Madsen timed in sixth quickest in his group before placing third in a heat race to lock into the 12th starting position for the A Main.

"We were really, really good in the A Main and came up to seventh," he said. "It's a shame we didn't get any further. The car was really strong at the end of the race.

"I feel like we're so close to really showing what we've got and putting it all together. Every time we race we're learning the car and learning each other. I feel like we're really close to being where we need to be."

The team plans to return to action this Friday and Saturday at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind., with the World of Outlaws.

Bacon Set for USAC Midget Week after Consecutive Sprint Car Top-Tens

Lonnie Wheatley, WINCHESTER, Ind. (June 16, 2020) – Brady Bacon is set for a busy slate of racing with this week’s USAC Indiana Midget Week that features six consecutive nights of racing throughout the Hoosier State beginning with Tuesday night’s card at Paragon Speedway.

It’s a spate of events that continues on at Gas City I-69 Speedway on Wednesday, Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway on Thursday and Friday, Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday and then Kokomo Speedway on Sunday.

Bacon will be wheeling the Klatt Enterprises No. 4 Midget over the course of the week, the same team for which he teams with in the USAC Silver Crown series.

“It’s a good car, we can contend for some wins this week,” Bacon says.

Additionally, Bacon will take in the non-wing Sprint Car portion of the week on five of the six nights as well.

Bacon will be aboard the Longworth No. 410 entry at the Gas City, Lincoln Park and Kokomo cards while breaking out the original Hoffman Racing No. 69ot at Lawrenceburg.

Bacon enters the week after reeling off finishes of fourth, seventh and eighth in USAC Sprint Car action throughout Iowa, Missouri and Indiana over the past pair of weekends.

“We have had a super-fast car every time out,” Bacon says of the Hoffman Racing Fatheadz Eyewear No. 69 Sprint Car.  “We just didn’t have things fall right to get back to victory lane, but we’re right there and close every night so more wins will come.”

Bacon opened the three-race USAC Sprint Car set by establishing the night’s fast time of 14.982 second at West Burlington, Iowa’s 34 Raceway on Friday, June 6, and then finishing out the night in fourth.

“We had a great car but then the rubber came in and there wasn’t much that could be done from that point,” Bacon recalls.

Moving on to Pevely, Missouri’s Federated Auto Parts I-55 Raceway, Bacon was again quickest among his qualifying group before finishing out the night in seventh place.

Then on Sunday night, Bacon advanced from tenth to claim eighth at Haubstadt, Indiana’s Tri-State Speedway.

“We were moving forward, then we got short slid and fell back to about 12th,” Bacon says.  “We were able to work back up to eighth, we had a better car than we’ve had at Haubstadt in a while so we’re definitely going the right direction.”

With the USAC National Sprint Cars idle until June 26, the focus shifts to USAC Midgets this week along with a handful of Non-Wing Sprint Car tilts as well.

Brady Bacon Racing is bolstered by the support of partners including Hoffman Auto Racing, Fatheadz Eyewear, Champion Oil, Gene Franckowiak, Drivewfx.com, Elliott’s Custom Trailers, ATC Trailers, Tel-Star Technologies, Dragonfly Aviation, Lykins Oil, Triple X Race Co., Hoosier Tire, XYZ Machine, Heath Clips Lawn Care, FK Indy, Engler Machine and Tool, FK Rod Ends, Specialty Rigging, Keizer Wheels, Purple Heart Foundation, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Smiley’s Racing Products, R&R Enterprises, DMI, ProGlide Coatings, Chalk Stixx, Wilwood Engineering, Lajoie Seats, Smith Precision Products, Allstar Performance, Simpson Racing Products, MyRacePass, Schroth Racing, Saldana Racing Products, KSE Racing Products, King Racing Products and Schoenfeld Headers.

2020 Quick Stats:  19 races, 3 wins, 8 top-fives, 10 top-tens.

Up Next:  USAC Midget Week and Non-Wing Sprint Cars.

Tuesday, June 16 – Paragon Speedway (Klatt Enterprises No. 4 Midget)
