B-Shepp Notches First Silver Dollar Nationals Triumph

Collects $53,000 in Crown Jewel Event

SHINNSTON, W.Va. (07/27/20) – A Silver Dollar Nationals win is something that has eluded Brandon Sheppard for some time, that changed on Saturday.

Sheppard took the lead on lap 88 and pulled away to capture that coveted victory in the tenth edition of the annual Imperial Tile Silver Dollar Nationals at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb.

The 27-year-old drove the Valvoline No. 1 Seubert Calf Ranches/ Durham Racing Engines-powered Rocket Chassis House Car to the $53,000 payday. It’s was Sheppard’s first-career victory in the annual Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event.

Kicking off the crown jewel weekend on Thursday, Rocket1 Racing was one of 46 entries on hand at the 4/10-mile oval for the Dirt Track Bank Go 50. After qualifying third in his time trial group, Brandon later finished second in his heat race to lock into the night’s main event.

Starting the $12,000-to-win feature in sixth, Sheppard quickly made his way into the Top-5. Tracking down the leader in the closing laps, Brandon made a charge at the top spot before crossing the finish line in third behind Jimmy Owens and Ricky Thornton Jr. Ricky Weiss and Josh Richards completed the Top-5.

“In the heat race there, everybody was hurting tires on the left rear, so I was kind of trying to save (rubber) as good as I could there in that feature,” the third-place finisher said. “There towards the end I really got going and my car felt really comfortable and maneuverable, and I passed a few cars kind of all over the racetrack there. My car is really good and balanced right now. I was hoping to shake it up a little bit there at the end, but Jimmy’s been really tough, and Ricky’s been tough too, and them guys did a really good job.”

On Friday, the field was set for two rounds of passing point heat races that would determine the line-up for Saturday’s finale. A third-place finish in the first round and a second-place outing in round two put Sheppard fourth overall in passing points, locking him into the A-Main on Saturday.

Sheppard started in fourth and raced inside the Top-5 for most of the 101-lap affair. Late in the feature, running the extreme outside line, Brandon sailed around Ricky Thornton Jr. for second on lap 82 and then Chad Simpson on lap 88 to take the lead.

“It’s so nice to start up front here finally,” Sheppard said. “Starting up front was a really big deal for us because I was able to control my own race and not worry about where everybody else was running. Those years (he came from deep in the field) I just blasted the top, just ran the crap out of the car the whole time, and by the time I’d get to second my tires are used up and you really don’t know how good your car is because it’s too late by the time you get there.”

Once in command, Sheppard went uncontested, pulling away to a 2.778 second advantage at the checkers ahead of Thornton Jr., Simpson, Tim McCreadie, and Ricky Weiss.

2020 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Championship Standings: 3568 points | third (26-points behind championship leader, Brad Sweet)

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (July 27, 2020) - Despite some mechanical misfortune during Williams Grove Speedway’s Summer Nationals finale on Saturday, July 25, ultimately forcing the ten-time World of Outlaws champion to retire early from main event competition, Fargo, North Dakota’s Donny Schatz put together a sound week in the Keystone State, highlighting all starts with a $25,000 victory at Lernerville Speedway on Tuesday, July 21.

Lining up sixth on the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup main event grid, Schatz battled his way forward in a hurry and took command for the first time on lap seven. Forced to battle back and forth with open wheel hotshot Kyle Larson and defending Series champion Brad Sweet, the driver of the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing entry would prevail, eventually leading the final lap to score the monster five-figure payday; Schtaz’ seventh Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup title.

“It’s awesome to win the Silver Cup,” said Schatz on Tuesday night in Lernerville victory lane. “Third win of the year. Normally we’d like to have more, but we’re not going to get greedy. We’re going to keep racing the way we are and keep going.

“It’s fun to race like that,” Schatz continued. “Those guys are good. That’s what you guys pay to see. My crew did a great job. I think what won us that race is figuring out how to run the racetrack early in the race. I got hanging there at the end and had to move around. I got to traffic, and I wasn’t good on the bottom. The 49 could get down there. The 57 could go there. But that’s what ultimately won us the race. Those guys were choking down around there and we could carry speed through (Turns) three and four.”

In addition to his win at Lernerville Speedway, Donny Schatz scored a seventh-place finish at the ‘Fabulous’ Lincoln Speedway on Thursday, July 23, followed by a runner-up performance during Williams Grove Speedway’s Summer Nationals opener on Friday, July 24.

Although scoring a trio of top-notch outcomes, Schatz’ ‘DNF’ during the Summer Nationals finale would bump the three-time winner in 2020 back to third in the World of Outlaws championship standings.

Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing will continue their 2020 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship seeking campaign with an Ohio/Indiana doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday, August 1-2. The Greatest Show On Dirt will visit Orrville, Ohio’s Wayne County Speedway on Saturday, followed by a stop at Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Indiana, on Sunday. Each event will award $10,000 top prizes.

Rico Abreu back on top with MOWA, top-five at Knoxville

Date: Friday, July 24th
Event: MOWA event at Jacksonville Speedway
Series: Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA)
Track: Jacksonville Speedway (Jacksonville, Illinois)
Rico Abreu A-Main Finish (Start): 1st (9th)

Date: Saturday, July 25th
Event: Knoxville Weekly Championship Series
Series: Open
Track: Knoxville Raceway (Knoxville, Iowa)
Rico Abreu A-Main Finish (Start): 5th (10th)

ST. HELENA, Calif. (July 27, 2020) - Winning has been an ongoing trend for St. Helena, California’s Rico Abreu, and for the second time in 2020, Abreu found himself in Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA) victory lane, this time during action at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois, on Friday, July 24.

Aided by some tough luck that fell upon the race leader, Abreu inherited the top spot at Jacksonville with just one circuit remaining, ultimately surviving a one lap dash to the finish with Sikeston, Missouri’s Hunter Schuerenberg in tow.

Abreu started ninth on the main event grid, driving on to secure his fourth Jacksonville Speedway victory in as many attempts, as well as his fifth feature win of the season.

Although not concluding his weekend with a second consecutive trip to Knoxville Raceway victory lane, Abreu made the most of his visit to the Sprint Car Capital of the World and ended his evening with a fifth-place performance after starting tenth on the grid. A fourth-place finish during heat race competition secured his spot on the feature starting lineup.

With all results considered, Abreu now owns 18 top-ten finishes thus far in 2020, 15 of which were scored inside the top-five. Abreu’s five victories have been accomplished at five different venues; Lincoln (Pa.) Speedway, Muskingum County Speedway, Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway, Knoxville Raceway, and Jacksonville Speedway.

“I can’t say enough about my team right now. Things are definitely clicking. I’m not sure we were the fastest car on Friday at Jacksonville, but sometimes being in the next best spot will work out in your favor. We were in a prime position and we took advantage of the winning opportunity presented to us,” Rico Abreu said, driver of the Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing/Abreu Vineyards/Curb Records/Lucas Oil Products/Salty’s BBQ/Priority Aviation/Self Made Racing/Whistle Stop Bar and Grill/Stadelhofer Construction/No. 24 sprint car. “We have a lot of racing on our agenda over the next few weeks. We want to do whatever we can to keep this momentum going.”
