BROWNSBURG, Ind. (August 13, 2018) – Tony Stewart’s return to the Hawkeye State was action-packed, to say the least.

Smoke, driver of the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Rush Truck Centers/Textron Off Road/Ford Performance/Curb Records/Sage Fruit/No. 14 sprint car, entered four events in five days; two during 360c.i. competition and two during 410 c.i. competition. The Columbus, Ind., native highlighted his visit to Iowa with a main event start during 360 Knoxville Nationals preliminary competition at Knoxville Raceway; Stewart was scored 20th.

Stewart launched his 360 Knoxville Nationals campaign by setting the fastest qualifying time during the Thursday night preliminary program.

“It’s always nice getting back to Knoxville Raceway,” Stewart said, a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion. “We were able to get a lot of lap time over the last week or so. That will prove to be very helpful when we visit New York with the All Star Circuit of Champions during the upcoming weekend. Hopefully we can keep improving and work toward a win with the Series.”

In addition to his 360 Knoxville Nationals preliminary A-main start, Stewart finished sixth during the 360 Knoxville Nationals finals B-main, as well as finished ninth during the Capitani Classic B-main on Sunday, August 5.
Although entered for action during the Front Row Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway on Monday, August 6, an early flat tire during preliminary action forced Stewart to retire for the rest of the evening.

Up next on the schedule, Tony Stewart will continue his 2018 campaign with a trio of Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 starts in the Empire State during the upcoming weekend, set to visit Utica-Rome Speedway, Orange County Fair Speedway, and Lebanon Valley Speedway on Friday through Sunday, August 17-19, respectively. Smoke will enter the weekend with ten top-ten finishes during All Star competition in 2018, four of which accomplished inside the top-five.

Series: World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series
Track: Knoxville Raceway (Knoxville, Iowa)
Donny Schatz A-Main Finish (Start): 5th (21st)

Date: Saturday, August 11th
Event: 58th annual Knoxville Nationals Finals
Series: World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series
Track: Knoxville Raceway (Knoxville, Iowa)
Donny Schatz A-Main Finish (Start): 2nd (4th)

World of Outlaws Championship Standings (as of 8/13/2018): 1st – 6468 points (198-point margin over second place, Brad Sweet)

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (August 13, 2018) – Nearly attaining an 11th Knoxville Nationals championship on Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway, Fargo, North Dakota’s Donny Schatz ended his weekend in the Hawkeye State one position short, ultimately missing sprint car racing’s highest honor and the $150,000 top prize that accompanies it by less than a car length.

Schatz, who has won ten out of the last 13 Knoxville Nationals championships, battled within a podium position during the first 47 circuits of the crown jewel event before getting a big break in the form of a caution with two laps remaining. Although the restart seemed promising, pounding the cushion as race leader, Brad Sweet, worked the bottom, Schatz could not prevail, forced to chase the Grass Valley, Calif., native to the final checkers.

The final margin of victory for Brad Sweet was .133 seconds; the second closest in Knoxville Nationals history.

“We were good tonight, but not good enough,” Donny Schatz explained after his A-main performance, driver of the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Textron Off Road/Ford Performance/Curb Records/Sage Fruit/No. 15 sprint car. “I knew we were going to be good late. We were just forced to go where Brad (Sweet) wasn’t. He proved to be very good on the bottom. Congratulations to him and his team. They deserve this. We’ll come back and try again next year.”

Donny Schatz kicked-off his 2018 Knoxville Nationals campaign with a fifth place finish during preliminary competition on Wednesday evening, August 8. Although forced to compete in the evening’s consolation B-main after failing to transfer through his respective heat race, Schatz rebounded in a big way, eventually transferring through the 12-lap B-main before rallying from 21st on the A-main grid to finish fifth. The impressive display was enough to lock Schatz in Saturday’s A-main.

Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart Racing will continue their 2018 World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series campaign with a trip North Dakota, ready to invade two tracks in two days on Friday and Saturday, August 17 & 18. The Greatest Show On Dirt will kick-off the weekend on Friday evening with a visit to River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, followed by a stop at Red River Valley Speedway on Saturday.

Still on top of the World of Outlaws championship standings, Schatz will enter the weekend with 15 Series victories on the season, also accumulating 45 top-ten finishes in 47 World of Outlaws main event stars.

The River Cities Speedway visit on Friday will be the second of two in 2018 for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. Schatz won the River Cities event contested in June, his eleventh victory of the season at the time, holding off Brad Sweet and Kerry Madsen at the flagstand.

Abreu finishes second during Knoxville Nationals preliminary, qualifies for Knoxville Nationals A-main

Date: Thursday, August 9th
Event: 58th annual Knoxville Nationals Preliminary Night
Series: World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series
Track: Knoxville Raceway (Knoxville, Iowa)
Rico Abreu A-Main Finish (Start): 2nd (2nd)

Date: Saturday, August 11th
Event: 58th annual Knoxville Nationals Finals
Series: World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series
Track: Knoxville Raceway (Knoxville, Iowa)
Rico Abreu A-Main Finish (Start): 24th (13th)

ST. HELENA, Calif. (August 13, 2018) – Rico Abreu’s August campaign continued to prove successful, padding his recent $20,000 Ironman 55 victory at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 with an A-main start during Knoxville Nationals competition at Knoxville Raceway. The true pinnacle of sprint car racing – the sport’s Super Bowl – Abreu qualified for the world’s biggest sprint car event by way of runner-up finish during Knoxville Nationals preliminary competition on Thursday, August 9. The Knoxville Nationals finale, a 50-lap program awarding a $150,000 top prize on August 11, featured 25 of the world’s best; Abreu was scored 24th.

“The last two weeks have been season-altering for us,” Abreu explained, driver of the Rico Abreu Racing/Abreu Vineyards/Alpinestars/Lucas Oil/Rhino Wipe/Priority Aviation/No. 24 sprint car. “To go from an Ironman victory to qualifying for the Knoxville Nationals A-main is pretty awesome. We certainly struggled during the early parts of the season, but this has certainly altered our attitudes for the better. I can’t say enough about this race team and what they are capable of doing. They never give up. They are mentally strong and keep pushing even when things get bad. I owe all of my recent successes to them.”

With Knoxville Nationals preliminary points setting Saturday night’s line-up, Abreu started the 50-lapper from the inside of row seven. Unfortunately, the St. Helena, Calif., native was cut short of any top-ten potential, actually forced to retire after the turn three and four cushion got the best of the familiar No. 24 sending Abreu for a wild ride. Abreu walked away from the incident unharmed.

“It wasn’t how we wanted to end our Nationals run, but that stuff happens. At least we were right there battling for a top-ten spot,” Abreu continued, who has now qualified for three consecutive Knoxville Nationals A-mains. “I was racing as hard as I could. On a stage that like, you can’t wait around. Regardless, we’re proud of our accomplishments and excited to move down the road.”

Rico Abreu’s upcoming plans will be determined in the coming days. Those interested should stay tuned online via Rico Abreu Racing social media.
