Kevin Swindell Finds New Passion in Ownership Side of Racing

Inside Line Promotions - GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (Nov. 22, 2016) - Kevin Swindell has shifted into a different side of motor sports in 2016.

Swindell, who became the youngest driver to win a World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series feature when he was 17-years-old and who is the only driver to record four straight Chili Bowl Nationals victories, became an owner this year.

It began in January at the Chili Bowl, where Kevin Thomas Jr. wheeled a midget owned by Swindell and Bernie Stuebgen of Indy Race Parts to an 11 th-place finish in the B Main of the marquee event that showcased a record 336 entries.

Swindell then spent most of the season as a crew chief helping younger drivers before an opportunity to own a winged sprint car team became available.

"I lived the right choices and the wrong choices of that process and to be able to help younger driver down the right direction has been important to me," he said. "I feel like I have been able to relay how to drive the car and what to do and I think it's easier for me being a younger guy … you never want to listen to your dad. I can relay it as someone who's been there and done it, but is still in that age range."

Swindell selected rising star Spencer Bayston for a handful of starts for the Swindell Speed Lab backed team toward the end of the season and the results were outstanding. Swindell and Bayston combined to produce three top fives, including a career-best second-place finish, and five top 10s in seven races.

"It wasn't something that was planned to happen as quick as it did," Swindell said. "I wanted to put something together to have. Spencer came along and all that worked out. By the season finale we were zoned in on what we needed and were getting closer to having the car where we needed it to be."

The plan for next season is for Bayston to race approximately two dozen times and Swindell said he is open to putting another driver in the car when Bayston is racing a midget elsewhere.

"We're going to run 20-to-30 races with Spencer around the USAC schedule he's going to do with Keith (Kunz)," Swindell said. "We're looking for the right opportunity to race as much as possible the rest of the time when he's busy with the midget. We're looking for possible help to add to what we have built."

Swindell is interested in adding a crew member to the team as well as marketing partners to help offset the costs of competing. Anyone interested in joining the team can email KSR391@gmail.com.

"I want to thank everyone who has helped build this team, including my parents, Charlie and Audrey Armstrong, Robert Brown, Will Kimmel Racing, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Indy Race Parts, Landon Simon, Kevin Thomas Jr., Shane Fleetwood, McElhannon Racing, Howard Moore Racing, A.G. Rains and Dave Reedy at Penske to name a few," he said. "I really appreciate everyone who has continued to support me."

Hanks Scores First-Ever Championship and Career-Best Four Wins During Breakout Season

Inside Line Promotions - BURLISON, Tenn. (Nov. 22, 2016) - Brandon Hanks enjoyed a breakout performance in 2016.

"It was a great year," he said. "I'm tickled to death how it played out. It's a big deal for our team. It's something we can build on. I know we're capable of a lot more. I need more experience and seat time to keep learning and getting better, but I feel good about how much we learned and how much we gained. The championship topped it all off."

Hanks captured his first career championship by winning the ASCS Red River Region title. He scored two wins with the region following his first career Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour triumph in March at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, which was his first sprint car win since 2012.

"When we won at Cotton Bowl it was a relief," he said. "I can't quite describe what it felt like. I hadn't even won a regional race with ASCS before I won that national race. To go all that time without winning and then to win a national race, that was a pretty big deal. That's where the confidence went up and everything started rolling. I knew I could win races and go after a championship."

Hanks used the momentum and confidence from that national victory to propel him through the ASCS Red River Region season, which he finished by tying for the region lead with nine top fives.

Hanks also posted a triumph during his first visit to Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo., in April during an ASCS Warrior Region event.

"The $5,000 at Sedalia was pretty big to me," he said. "I had never won that much money to race. Bryan Clauson was at that race. Bryan has been one of my heroes for a long time. I've been watching him for forever and he was one of my heroes. Of course Brian Brown was there and he's pretty dominant on half miles. To win that race felt pretty awesome. That was a big deal to me. It made me feel like Cotton Bowl wasn't a fluke."

The two ASCS Red River Region race wins came at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., in May and at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla., in July.

"Lawton was one of the most fun races I had with Mickey (Walker) and John Carney II," he said. "You could have thrown a blanket over the three of us. That was a lot of fun.

"The whole season was a blast. I want to thank my family and my sponsors for all of the continued support and helping make some of my dreams come true."

Kulhanek Makes Memorable Comeback to Cap 2016, Joining ASCS National Tour in 2017

Inside Line Promotions - DANBURY, Texas (Nov. 22, 2016) - The 2016 season was a trying one for Ray Allen Kulhanek, who was sidelined for approximately six weeks because of burns sustained while racing.

While the difficult point in Kulhanek's racing career was looking to end the year on a sour note, Kulhanek climbed back in the cockpit for one final time and flipped the devastating injury on its side.

Kulhanek captured the Texas Grand for the second straight season as the 305ci winged sprint car win earlier this month provided him with a storybook ending to what could have been a disastrous season.

"That accident was scary," he said. "No driver wants to go through anything like that or see another driver go through anything like that. I had a lot of mental things running through my mind. I didn't want to end the year with the accident being the last memory of racing I had. To be lucky enough to get back in a car is a blessing."

Kulhanek scored four feature victories during the year, including three straight weekends with a triumph in July. A win on July 15 at Texarkana 67 Speedway in Texarkana, Ark., capped that string of success and provided one of the biggest moments of the season for Kulhanek.

"I think the highlight of the year is between the last race I won and the one at Texarkana, which was the first night I drove for Bruce Griffith," he said. "Being a new car, new team, different engines … to go out and win the first night was a confidence booster to know you can adapt quickly."

Kulhanek and Griffith put together several solid performances during the second half of the season and the duo is excited to announce it will head onto the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour full time in 2017.

"I've worked really hard trying to go run the ASCS National Tour," Kulhanek said. "I'm pretty excited to do that and feel blessed to have the opportunity. To team up with a guy as established as he is it's an honor and a blessing. I'm not going to race for anything less than the championship. I know that we're capable of doing it. We have to put all the right pieces of the puzzle in the right place. It's going to be a lot of work over the winter."

Kulhanek said the team is looking to hire a full-time crew member. Interested applicants can call Kulhanek at 281-825-8766.

"I had some good runs that we didn't get results on," he said. "We had good speed all year long. We just needed Lady Luck to be a little friendlier and hopefully she will be next season.

"I want to give a special thanks to Bruce for the opportunity as well as Keith Odom, Mark Jones and Tim Cooper with Big Bass Tour, Randy with Alcon Construction, Marvin and Peggy Pearson as well as Dave and Beverly Miller with Miller's RV Park for all they have done. All of my sponsors are amazing and I feel so grateful for their support."

Kulhanek would also like to thank Big Bass Tour, Texas Rotating Equipment, Alcon Construction, GoPro, Griffith Truck & Equipment, J&J Auto Racing, ButlerBuilt Professional Seat Systems, Miller's RV Park, ASI Racing Engines, Frazier & Son, Smiley's Racing Products, 41 Shocks, Engler Machine & Tool, Outlaw Wings, Hoosier Racing Tire Southwest, Penske Racing Shocks, C4 Graphics, Simpson Race Products and Marvin and Peggy Pearson for their support.

Tankersley Drives to New Level With ASCS Gulf South Championship and Career-Best Five Wins

Inside Line Promotions - HIGHLANDS, Texas (Nov. 22, 2016) - Channin Tankersley produced the best season in his sprint car career in 2016.

Tankersley recorded his second ASCS Gulf South Region championship in the past three years and he earned a career-best five region wins during the strong season.

"It's so hard to stay consistent throughout a season," he said. "To win as many races as we did it's like icing on top of the cake. We reached our goals."

Tankersley swept a pair of ASCS Gulf South Region weekends with wins at Heart O' Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, on May 6 and at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, on May 7, and victories at Heart O' Texas Speedway on July 22 and at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, on July 23. His final region victory came during the season finale on Sept. 2 at Battleground Speedway in his hometown of Highlands, Texas.

"Sweeping two weekends is an accomplishment in itself," he said. "I think prior to this year it'd only been swept a few times before. To do it twice in one year is a solid accomplishment.

"It just shows that we are a contender every night. Last year we were in contention to win the championship, but I lost it in the final three or four races. I think we've been one of the top contenders the past three or four years. We're finally showing the success of putting the whole year together."

Tankersley led the region with the five triumphs as well as 10 top fives and 11 top 10s in 13 features.

He also posted his career-best Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour result with a second-place finish in June at Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo.

"I want to thank everyone who has provided me with great opportunities, including the car owners, sponsors, fans and my family," he said. "I'm really looking forward to next season and topping our achievements from this year."
