Giovanni Scelzi Captures Top 10 at Knoxville During Season Debut in Indy Race Parts No. 71

Inside Line Promotions - KNOXVILLE, Iowa (April 23, 2019) - Giovanni Scelzi earned a top-10 result during his season debut in the Indy Race Parts backed No. 71 last Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.

Scelzi and car owner Bernie Stuebgen headed west to tackle the season opener at the half-mile oval after weather wiped out races near the Indiana shop.

"It's always great to get laps at Knoxville," Scelzi said. "Unfortunately, we didn't time in as well as we wanted and qualifying points are pretty valuable so that buried us."

Scelzi qualified 10th quickest out of the 30-plus competitors. He then maneuvered from fourth to second place during a heat race to rank eighth in overall points. That lined him up on the outside of the fourth row for the main event.

"The track had a big curb up top and was narrow on the bottom," he said. "The race went green to checkered and I never got into a rhythm, but you can't be upset because that was the toughest local competition you'll get.

"It was productive. We had a brand new car with a fresh engine so there were a lot of variables. Everything went smooth. Plus, every time you go there it helps you. Running the bottom there takes a lot of laps. It's a very fine line. So any time you get laps at Knoxville it's very valuable."

Scelzi is scheduled to return to Knoxville Raceway this Saturday before making his debut at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Ind., on Sunday with the BOSS Series.

Bell and Swindell SpeedLab Backed Team Hustle to Top 10 at Knoxville

Inside Line Promotions - KNOXVILLE, Iowa (April 23, 2019) - The Swindell SpeedLab sponsored sprint car team scored its fourth straight top-10 result last Saturday after making a last-minute decision to invade Knoxville Raceway.

Inclement weather forced the team to change plans and head west for the season opener at the half-mile oval. NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Christopher Bell qualified 11th quickest during qualifying to open the night for the No. 39.

"We weren't as good as we needed to be in qualifying," team owner Kevin Swindell said. "By the end of the heat race we were good. We needed the first five or six laps back in the heat and we could have moved forward."

Bell finished fourth in a heat race. That ranked him 14th in overall points and lined the team up on the outside of the seventh row for the main event.

"We had something happen with the steering early on," Swindell said. "He never really had power steering the whole time so he could only run 75 or 80 percent being on the safe side. Otherwise I think we were going to be pretty good in the feature."

Bell hustled to a 10th-place finish.

He and the team will return to action this Sunday at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill., with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series before competing with 'The Greatest Show on Dirt' on May 10-11 at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio.

Bruce Jr. Produces Top-Five Result at Lake Ozark Speedway

Inside Line Promotions - ELDON, Mo. (April 23, 2019) - Tony Bruce Jr. posted his first top-five finish of the season last Saturday at Lake Ozark Speedway.

Bruce Jr. was solid during his first race of the season behind the wheel of the Smith Family No. 86 as he maneuvered from sixth to third place during a heat race.

"We got a good start and I was able to get to third on the second lap," he said. "I was able to go to the top or the bottom and pretty much do anything that I wanted. The track was pretty racy all night."

The heat race run ranked Bruce Jr. fourth in overall points and lined him up on the outside of the second row for the main event.

"It's always good to start strong," he said. "We were lucky to have a good car from the word 'go' and we were solid all night. We had speed in the car all night.

"At one point we were in third and at one point I fell to sixth on a restart. We were really good before the first caution. I was underneath (Jonathan) Cornell for second. When the caution came out he was able to take my line on the restart. We were one dimensional on the bottom because I was a lot faster down there. We had a little too much stagger to roll the top. I made a mistake on a restart and had to climb back to third. Then at the end of the race I missed the bottom in turns one and two and fell to fourth. It was good to come out of there with a top five."

The fourth-place finish was Bruce Jr.'s best in a sprint car in limited starts since last September.

Old School Racing's Tankersley Produces First Win of Season With Last-Lap Pass

Inside Line Promotions - GLENMORA, La. (April 23, 2019) - Channin Tankersley capitalized on a last-lap pass to garner his first feature victory of the season last Saturday at Thunder Valley Speedway.

The Old School Racing driver ran second for nearly the entire feature before making the move in traffic in turns one and two. He then held on in turns three and four to score his first trip to Victory Lane this season and 26th career with the ASCS Gulf South Region.

"That track was awesome," Tankersley said. "They had five classes. We started hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and we were loading up by 10:30 p.m. The surface of the track was awesome. You had a top and a bottom and kind of a middle, about all you could ever ask for."

Tankersley opened the night by winning a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. That locked him into the feature redraw and he pulled the No. 1 to snag the pole position for the main event.

"We went into the first corner side by side and he got me into turn three and led about the whole thing," he said. "We were pretty equal speed. I'd gain on him a little and then he'd pull me a little. I showed him my nose a couple of times, but I didn't have enough to get by him. We got into traffic and it kind of screwed both of us up, but I was able to guess right and get around him on the last lap.

"We went into turn one and there were like four lapped cars side by side and front to back. He went one way and I went the other and luckily a hole opened up for me. I went right through the middle in turns one and two."

Tankersley's race win extended his lead in the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings.

Old School Racing returns to action this Friday and Saturday at Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, Miss. The event is co-sanctioned with the ASCS Mid-South Region.

"I've been in contention to win there three or four times," Tankersley said. "One real shot I had I passed for the lead on the last lap and then someone spun in turn three so they threw a yellow. It put me back to second and we finished there."
