Brandon Davis puts the MTS in USMTS

Brandon Davis was fast out of the box Friday as the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt flooded the Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis., with the Best of the Best in dirt modified racing for the 12th Annual Spring Shootout built by LT Construction.

The 32-year-old from Hayfield, Minn., set the tone early on by winning a Summit Racing Equipment gift card during the pre-race drivers meeting.

After that, he blasted around eight cars to win Fast Shafts Heat Race #3 where he was the only driver of the night to break the 15-second-lap barrier to earn the QA1 Quick Lap Award as well as the Rush RaceGear by Austin Witt “Rush to the Front” Award which goes to the driver passing the most cars in a heat race.

With about $500 in contingency awards already in his pocket, he added four more from Gorsuch Performance Solutions, Swift Springs, Victory Fuel and VP Racing for winning the main event which paid $5,000 cash to the pilot of the KJSE-powered No. 50III Tri-Built Race Cars USMTS Modified.

The road to Victory Fuel Victory Lane was not easy, however, as USMTS national points leader Jake Timm of Winona, Minn., had his second career win at MTS in his crosshairs while Davis stalked him the entire distance.

With seven laps to go, Timm contacted the wall which slowed his pace. Davis took his opportunity, made his move around Timm and drove away to a 1.969-second triumph over Timm.

It was the first win for Davis at the former Tri-Oval Speedway which was born again under the direction of Bob Timm.

Tucson’s Jake O'Neil captured the last USMTS victory at the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval on Sept. 2, 2022—his only one here—and finished third to round out the Featherlite Trailers Top-3 podium on Friday night.

Another former winner here, Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas, scooted from ninth on the starting grid to fourth at the finish line while Oskaloosa, Iowa’s Cayden Carter rounded out the top five finishers in the second race of the Collins Brothers Towing USMTS North Region presented by Featherlite.

Ending his two-night win streak, Jim Chisholm was sixth followed by Tanner Mullens, Joe Chisholm, Lucas Schott and Gary Christian, who raced from 23rd to 10th to earn the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger.

Up ‘The Creek’ on Saturday: The USMTS road warriors head to the most-visited venue in the 26-year history of the series on Saturday for the 21st Annual LR Waste Services Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.

The high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located in the rolling hills of Southern Minnesota will be hosting Summit USMTS Modifieds for the 127th time on Thursday. The last 126 features have produced 47 different winners from 2002-2023.

When he won last year's Featherlite Fall Jamboree opener, Rodney Sanders tied Jason Hughes at ‘The Creek' with an astounding 14 career wins.

The USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks will both be in action on Saturday with pits opening at 3 p.m., grandstands at 4 and hot laps at 5:30 with racing to follow.

The Deer Creek Speedway is one of America's most popular state-of-the-art racing complexes with a high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval and an adjoining campground which sits on 60 acres located at 25262 US-63, Spring Valley, MN 55975.

Racin’ Mason on Sunday: The five-night whirlwind wraps up Sunday at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Mason City Motor Speedway in Mason City, Iowa, for the 9th Annual USMTS Mod Mania with a $3,000 top prize to the USMTS winner.

USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks and Outlaw Mini-Mods are also racing. The pit gate swings open at 3:30 p.m., grandstands at 4 and hot laps kick off at 6 with racing to follow.

The Pritchard Family Auto Stores Mason City Motor Speedway is a high-banked 1/3-mile clay oval located 5.1 miles east of I-35 at exit 194 on SR 122 (at the North Iowa Fairgrounds). For more information, check out https://masoncitymotorspeedway.com/.

Chisholm wins USMTS War in West Union

He only led the final lap on Wednesday but Jim Chisholm led all 40 on Thursday en route to Victory Fuel Victory Lane at the Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa, for the 11th Annual War in West Union presented by No Limit Diesel.

Chisholm’s second straight win with the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt was worth another $3,000 and propelled him into the points lead of the Collins Brothers Towing USMTS North Region presented by Featherlite.

The 3/8-mile clay oval at the Fayette County Fairgrounds produced some high-speed action throughout the night, with multiple drivers swapping positions inside the top five.

But nobody had an answer for the 21-year-old from Osage, Iowa, and his No. 24C Skyrocket Chassis. It was his ninth career USMTS win, tying him on the all-time wins list with Brandon Davis, Jake Timm and Brad Waits.

Some timely Gorsuch Performance Caution Flags waved which happened just as Chisholm was reaching lapped traffic.

“It made the night easier, but they gave us a really good race track,” Chisholm said. “I think that some lapped traffic racing would have been so much fun. I hate to see it—I really do—because I think Rodney (Sanders) and me could have had a really fun battle in lapped traffic.

Sanders had to settle for second at the end of the race while Gary Christian, who led all but the final lap one night earlier, wound up in third atop the Featherlite Trailers Top-3 podium.

“I just like lapped traffic racing. I think it’s the funnest part about the sport… it’s what I live for, so I like the yellows and I hate them.”

With his fourth-place finish, Jake Timm remains the USMTS national points leader with a 28-point cushion over Chisholm, who also led every lap of his heat race.

Cayden Carter rounded out the top five while Alex Williamson, Jason Hughes, Tanner Mullens, Zack VanderBeek and Dan Ebert completed the top ten.

It was a solid run for VanderBeek in his first start of 2024. His last win was at this event last year.

Meanwhile, Williamson’s run from the 13th starting spot earned him the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award.

Thunder rolls Friday: The Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis., hosts the 12th Annual Spring Shootout built by LT Construction on Friday for the second of four straight shows in the Collins Brothers Towing USMTS North Region presented by Featherlite.

Last-lap pass propels Chisholm to USMTS win in Webster City

Blue skies and dry weather finally greeted the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt when they showed up Wednesday at the Karl Chevrolet Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa, for the 14th Annual USMTS Spring Classic.

After snagging the Sybesma Graphics Pole Award, Gary Christian of Broken Bow, Okla., set sail and set the pace throughout the entire 35-lap main event—all except for the final few hundred feet as Joe Chisholm snatched the lead and the win in the final turn.

Following back-to-back rainouts in Texas this month, the weather and wetness again threatened this week’s show but USMTS President and track promoter Todd Staley and his staff worked the soil all week and finally produced a nearly flawless racing surface for the drivers in attendance.

“This is probably one of the best racetracks we’ve raced on all season here on the tour,” Chisholm declared. “It really sucks we didn’t get one more cars, but even with the rain and everything else you know, Todd (Staley) came together and gave us one hell of a show.

“I thought earlier I was going to get around Gary but he fired so well after those restarts. “I don't know if I was just in my head a little bit, and I missed marks a couple different times, but he started taking my Lane a little bit down over there and I was getting a little tight in the traffic.

“At the end of race he moved it back up and I’m like if I can just get underneath him getting in, there wasn't really a lot on the top and they were trying to diamond back down to get a run, but as long as I can just be there—you know, kind of in the way. I figured I could do it.”

In all, five Gorsuch Performance Caution Flags slowed the momentum of the feature race. The first yellow waved during the second Fast Shafts Heat Race when Rodney Sanders saw a good run end in a cloud of smoke.

‘The Rocket’ went to a backup, and then stored through field to finish fifth after starting 17th on the grid to earn the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award.

Christian settled for the runner-up paycheck while Dan Ebert snuck past Kyle Brown on the final lap to claim the third spot and final position on the Featherlite Trailers Top-3 podium.

“The race car was good. Hats off to Jim,” Christian said. “He just got me on the last lap, last corner so if you’re on the other side of that it feels pretty good but we keep working hard. We’ve got a winning car, so we’ll get a few,”

Including Wednesday night’s contest, the Hamilton County Fairgrounds has hosted 26 USMTS events in 25 years. The only previous winners on hand were Jason Hughes, Terry Phillips and Ebert as Chisholm notched his first in Webster City and eighth of his short USMTS career.

Sixth through tenth, respectively, were Alex Williamson, Troy Morris III making his series debut, Phillips, Tanner Mullens and Dereck Ramirez.

Opening in July 1910, the Hamilton County Speedway is the oldest speedway in the state of Iowa. In 1938, work began on the current location at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. The semi-banked half-mile dirt track was completed in the spring of 1939, and the first races were held on the track in September of that year.

The first of four straight shows in the Collins Brothers Towing USMTS North Region presented by Featherlite gets going on Thursday, May 23, at the fast and furious Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa, for the 11th Annual War in West Union.

Defending champion Zack VanderBeek, Ryan Gustin and Terry Phillips are the only two-time winner’s in West Union. Jake Neal won the inaugural event in 2008 with Lucas Schott, Rodney Sanders and Dereck Ramirez also one-time champs here.

USRA Stock Cars, USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners will also be racing. The gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing to follow.

FCS is a semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located 0.9 mile south of US 18 on SR 150, then 0.1 mile east on SR 56 (at the Fayette County Fairgrounds) to 504 S Vine St, West Union, IA 52175. Surf racefayettecountyspeedway.net to learn more.

The wildly popular Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis., hosts the 12th Annual Spring Shootout built by LT Construction on Friday, May 24, followed by the 21st Annual LR Waste Services Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., on Saturday, May 25.

The 120-hour grind wraps up Sunday, May 26, at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Mason City Motor Speedway in Mason City, Iowa, for the 9th Annual USMTS Mod Mania.
