Masters finale goes to USMTS champ Ramirez

NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (June 18)—A week void of good luck and sprinkled with some bad luck forced Dereck Ramirez to do what fans have become accustomed to—figuring it all out for the finale and heading home with the biggest check.

It happened again Saturday night as Ramirez was the class of the field for the final night of the 23rd Annual Masters at the Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis. It was the 22nd win of his USMTS career but first at this racetrack.

The defending champion of the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt, Ramirez drew the No. 4 chip to put his No. 4R machine in the fourth starting spot for the 30-car, 45-lap main event.

But it was Jake O’Neil earning the Sybesma Graphics Pole Award for the third night in a row, and in position to backup his winning effort on Friday night.

O’Neil jumped out to an early lead but it was obvious this would not be a runaway as Clayton Wagamon tore up the cushion by taking the longest way around the high-banked 3/8-mile oval.

For Wagamon, it was the fastest way though and he blasted ahead of O’Neil to take the lead with five laps in the books. His lead lasted 13 laps before Ramirez used the middle of the racetrack to maneuver his way into the top spot.

Ramirez never trailed again as he was able to navigate heavy lapped traffic in the closing laps to keep a charging O’Neil behind him at the checkers.

The win was worth $10,000 to the 35-year-old from Woodward, Okla., and his third of the season.

Between Ramirez, O’Neil (6 wins) and points leader Dustin Sorensen (4 wins) three trio have claimed 13 of the 18 feature races in 2022. Those same three won all three Masters main event this weekend.

Behind O’Neil, Jake Timm finished third while never leaving the top five and Friday’s runner-up Tanner Mullens held off Sorensen for the fourth spot.

Rodney Sanders was sixth, Wagamon secured the seventh position, eighth went to Zack VanderBeek, Dan Ebert capped off a strong week in ninth and Terry Phillips rounded out the top 10.

24 before 5: The USMTS drivers and teams will be on hiatus for the next 24 days—or in many cases they’ll be looting other dirt modified shows—before embarking on a huge week featuring five main events at three different racetracks.

The series returns to action on Tuesday, July 12, at the Mason City Motor Speedway in Mason City, Iowa, for the 3rd Annual Mod Mania, and then it’s the annual return to “The Big O” for the 2nd Annual Mod Wars on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 14-16, at the Ogilvie Raceway
In Ogilvie, Minn.

The whirlwind return to battle wraps up Sunday, July 17, with the 13th Annual Summersota Nationals at the Casino Speedway in Watertown, S.D.—one of the most popular stops on tour year after year.

If you can’t be there in person, witness all the action from anywhere on any device with your RacinDirt Pit Pass where you can watch live and access exclusive content on your desktop and laptop computers, as well as a suite of apps for added convenience including Roku, Amazon Fire, iOS, Apple TVGoogle Play.

O’Neil outduels Mullens for Masters glory

NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (June 17)—On the second night of the 23rd Annual Masters at the Cedar Lake Speedway, Jake O’Neil raced side-by-side with Tanner Mullens for the better part of Friday night’s 40-lap feature and held on to claim the $5,000 top prize.

It was the sixth win for O’Neil in this year’s Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt and the fifth time Mullens has settled for the runner-up paycheck—four of them following O’Neil to the checkered flag.

O’Neil took the lead when the race started and he battled hard to fend off Terry Phillips for the first dozen laps, leading many of them by a mere bumper over the veteran.

Mullens eventually made his way in front of Phillips using the center of the high-banked 3/8-mile oval, and then pulled even with O’Neil as they completed the 15th lap. From that moment on, the two were separated by less than a second every time they crossed beneath the flagstand.

Meanwhile, back-and-forth battles throughout the field left spectators wishing for a spare set of eyeballs. While O’Neil and Mullens crossed the stripe next to each other for the last 20 laps, Phillips and Dustin Sorensen mirrored that action in a race for third.

Mullens beat O’Neil to the strip by a nose to lead for the first time on lap 26, but it was the last time as a lapped car briefly slowed his momentum enough to let O’Neil powered back into the lead one lap later.

In the end, O’Neil captured his 26th career win with a half-second advantage over Mullens. It was worth $5,000 to the 30-year-old from Tucson, Ariz.

“It was awesome racing with them guys and I appreciate them giving me room,” O’Neil said of his bouts with Phillips and Mullens. “He (Mullens) he could have taken it a couple times there and I was just holding on for dear life, honestly. I feel like them guys are probably a lot better than I was. I’d rather be lucky than good.”

O'Neil, Mullens and Phillips filled the podium steps while Clayton Wagamon got by Sorensen to earn a fourth-place check. Darrell Nelson, Zack VanderBeek, Rodney Sanders, Carlos Ahumada Jr. and Dan Ebert completed the top 10.

Masters finale happens Saturday: The 23rd Annual Masters continues Saturday with complete programs for all classes. USMTS Modifieds and Super Late Models compete in a pair of $10,000-to-win championship features while USRA Late Models have a $1,000 top prize up for grabs.

The pit gate opens at 2 p.m., spectator gates open at 5, drivers will gather for their pit meeting at 6 with hot laps at 6:30 and racing getting underway at 7.

Saturday’s general admission tickets are $40, students are $20 and pit passes are $45. Kids ages 5 and under are admitted free of charge.

Dustin doubles Dad with USMTS Masters win

NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (June 16)—Thursday’s opener at the 23rd Annual Masters was the 16th event of the 2022 season for the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt, and points leader Dustin Sorensen rumbled to his fourth victory of the season at the legendary Cedar Lake Speedway.

Jake O’Neil, however, has garnered the most wins this season with his fifth triumph happening just five nights ago in the finale of the Belleville Dirt Nationals and he sat on the pole for the start of the 35-lap main event at the 65-year-old 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval.

But it was fellow front row starter Kyle Brown who got the jump on O’Neil our of the gate and took control of the race with Dan Ebert following into second place one lap later. They remained that way until the race’s first caution on lap 4.

With the green flag back out, O’Neil narrowly held his spot as Jake Timm and Cayden Carter challenged him for the spot. That battle lasted only one lap as Rodney Sanders, who was fighting for seventh, suffered a flat left rear tire and forced a second appearance of the yellow flag.

Back to racing, a fun four-car fight between Brown, Ebert, Sorensen and rim-riding Jake Timm all in the hunt for the top spot. Timm’s tip-toeing around the top ended on lap 8 when he smacked the yellow guardrail in turn 2 and left the race as the yellow waved again.

The next restart saw Sorensen find some traction on the low side of the track and he slipped past Brown for the lead with 20 laps in the books. A few moment slater, O’Neil stormed around the outside of Brown into second.

Following another caution with 10 laps to go, O’Neil found himself three-wide with Zack VanderBeek and Ebert as they exited the fourth turn racing back to the green flag. The result was another caution with O’Neil and VanderBeek both restarting at the tail of the field.

Back-to-back cautions for Darron Fuqua and debris on the racing surface with nine laps to go kept the field bunched tightly and kept lapped traffic out of the picture for most of the race.

One more caution with six laps to go extinguished any hopes that Sanders, O’Neil or Shane DeVolder were holding on to as the trio collided in the fourth turn.

It seemed to only place to avoid trouble was to be in front of it, and that’s just what Sorensen did for the final 15 laps of the race to nab his tenth USMTS triumph—doubling the career win total of his father, Mike Sorensen.

While Sorensen pocketed $3,000 for his effort, Ebert came home with the runner-up paycheck behind the 21-year-old points leader with Terry Phillips, Dereck Ramirez and Carter completing the top five.

Brown held on for a solid sixth-place finish as 24th-starting Tanner Mullens held off 22nd-starting Carlos Ahumada Jr. for the seventh spot. Tyler Davis and Brandon Givens rounded out the top 10.
