USMTS Labor Day doubleheader on deck
The Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s returns to action this Saturday and Sunday, September 5-6, for a traditional Labor Day Weekend excursion through Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa.
The series travels to familiar and hallowed ground on Saturday for the 15th Annual J&S JCB USMTS Labor Day Duel presented by Eibach at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., and then the high-speed road show stops at the Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa, on Sunday for the 8th Annual USMTS War in West Union presented by Integra.
Labor Day Duel: By the end of the Saturday’s event, the USMTS will dole out a feature winner’s check at ‘The Creek’ for the 113th time—more than any other racetrack in America—but due to the recent pandemic, Saturday will also end the longest hiatus from the high-banked clay oval since the first race in 2002. The series last visited here Sept. 21, 2019, for the finale of the Featherlite Fall Jamboree.
The list of former USMTS winners here could serve as dirt modified racing’s half of fame members. Nine-time USMTS national champ Kelly Shryock won the first-ever USMTS contest here in 2002 but his 10 career wins at the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval puts him second on the list behind Jason Hughes, who has a series-best 14 victories here. Rodney Sanders has also garnered 10 checkered flags here.
Ryan Gustin has seven wins while Tim Donlinger and Terry Phillips each have five, along with defending USRA Modified national champion Brandon Davis, who won this event last year and recently became the track’s all-time winningest driver.
Jason Cummins and Brad Waits have four apiece and three wins are noted by Cade Dillard, Zack VanderBeek and Joey Jensen. Two-time winners include Corey Dripps, Jason Krohn, Ryan Ruter, Stormy Scott, Lucas Schott, Johnny Scott and Dustin Sorensen.
Drivers who have visited victory lane here one time include Mark Noble, Steve Wetzstein, Darin Walker, Tony Fraise, Dan Daniels, Chad Kinder, Mark Burgtorf, Brad McEwan, Randy Timms, Dean Mahlstedt, Tommy Myer, Mike Sorensen, Mike Spaulding, Dan Chapman, Les Duellman, Mike Hejna, Steve Arpin, Jon Tesch, Jordan Grabouski, Jeremy Payne, Craig Thatcher and Tommy Weder Jr. while Dereck Ramirez and Jacob Bleess added their names to the list in 2019.
Sharing the spotlight with the USMTS will be the Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge built by Medieval Chassis featuring American Racer USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods. Wissota Street Stocks will also be racing.
The Deer Creek Speedway is a high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval which sits on 60 acres with one of America’s most popular state-of-the-art racing complexes and an adjoining campground. The track is located 11.3 miles south of I-90 at exit 209 on US 63 (0.7 mile north of SR 16). The physical address for mapping is 25262 US Hwy 63, Spring Valley, MN 55975.

War in West Union: The industrious and illustrious USMTS gas-mashers will provide spectators with a remarkable Sunday evening show at the Fayette County Speedway. This will be the eighth visit by the USMTS since 2007 when Jason Krohn won the inaugural event here. Jake Neal picked up his first and only USMTS victory the following season, and Ryan Gustin won here in 2009.
Zack VanderBeek got the win in 2016 and Gustin became the first two-time winner of this event in 2017. Lucas Schott is the defending champion of the event.
For a second straight night, the Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s will be joined by the Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge built by Medieval Chassis featuring American Racer USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods. Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks will complete the four-class card.
The Fayette County Speedway is one of the oldest, continuously running racetracks in Iowa. In the 1930s, the Fayette County Fairgrounds was a horse track that circled just about the entire fairgrounds. The present pit area is the old back stretch for the former half-mile track.
In 1991, promoter Jerry Blue built the 3/8-mile track that is raced on today. The track is now operated by the Fayette County Ag Society Race Committee. Their goal is to provide the best racing show possible with 50/50 ticket proceeds going back into facility improvements including recently renovated women’s restrooms, updated concession stand and the new grandstand walkway.
The Fayette County Speedway is a semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located 0.9 mile south of US 18 on SR 150, then 0.1 mile east on SR 56 (Vine St.).

The weekend was originally intended to be a three-day affair but Minnesota authorities thwarted the return of the USMTS to the Chateau Speedway in Lansing on Friday due to COVID-19 issues.
Currently, the 2020 schedule for the Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s is highlighted by 43 nights of racing at 26 unique dirt ovals for the 22nd season of competition for the world’s Best of the Best in dirt modified racing.
