Hughes marches to ARMI All-American triumph at Arrowhead Speedway
The inaugural ARMI Contractors All-American wrapped up Saturday night and the all-new state-of-the-art Arrowhead Speedway in Colcord, Oklahoma, did not disappoint.
The 1/3-mile dirt oval delivered for the race fans, and delivered two hometown victories for Jason Hughes, who built the winning chassis and collected $20,023 for his second win of the weekend with the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt.
Hughes—a four-time USMTS national champion—saw his chance at a fifth title disappear on Friday as Rodney Sanders won the main event to clinch his fifth USMTS crown instead.
Hughes snapped a six-year winless drought on Thursday, and there were no complaints from Hughes on Saturday night as the 49-year-old veteran collected $23,723 along with the 156th and 157th wins of his USMTS career over a 72-hour stretch.
“Thursday night was our first one in a long time, and we knew we had to get that monkey off our back and they’d start rolling around for us,” Hughes said with a grin after his win. “We've had a really good car for quite a while. We just ain’t got the luck to finish it up but we got ‘er done this weekend.”
Hughes primarily kept the right rear of his USMTS Modified up against the outside wall, churning for any moisture he could find in the track. Occasionally, however, Jake Timm forced him to move to the middle and bottom of the racing surface, throwing caution to the wind more than a couple of times.
“That was a lot of fun. I’ve always paid for my own stuff and had a little bit of sponsor help—and we’ve always appreciated all that—but when you do that you’ve got to really take care of your equipment so you don’t abuse it and you can run it again next week,” Hughes revealed. This damn time I figured out you just got to drive it like you hate it, and if you wreck it you build another one and go on.”
For most of Saturday’s 50-lapper, Timm gave Hughes all the pressure he could ask for. In fact, he snuck by Hughes just before the yellow flag appeared for the third and final time with eight laps to go.
Back under green, Hughes was able to keep Timm at bay and crossed beneath the checkered flags with about two car-lengths to spare. It was the third straight runner-up finish of the weekend for the son of hall-of-famer Bob Timm, who also owns the Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis.
“I knew I couldn’t go out there and make any mistakes because (Jake Timm) ain't going to make many. I could see him driving under there and he slid me once and I had to turn back underneath him. He ran us really clean. We’ve raced against him a lot, and we’ll race against him a lot more like that.”
While Timm settled for the second step on the podium one again, Swift Springs Fast Qualifier Jim Chisholm charged up to third by race’s end with Tanner Mullens clawing his way from 18th on the starting grid to cross the finish line in fourth.
Jake O'Neil, who swapped the second spot with Jake Timm for a few laps, fell back to fifth on the final board. Rodney Sanders, Chad Wheeler, Carlos Ahumada Jr., Tom Berry Jr. and Gunner Martin completed the top ten.
And then there were two: Just two races remain for the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt, beginning with the 7th Annual Grant Junghans Memorial presented by Shop Quik at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas, on Friday, October 27.
Rained out earlier this summer, the event features a $12,002 top prize and no less than $1,302 for every racer taking the green flag in the main event.
The 2023 campaign for the USMTS takes place on Saturday, October 28, at the 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas, with the fourth running of the Modified Spooktacular.
For its Silver Anniversary season, the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt currently features racing at some of America's premier dirt track racing venues. The winners of those events are set to earn more than $300,000 with nearly $2 million in purses and prize money earmarked for the 2023 campaign.

Sanders seals fifth USMTS title with fifth win in ARMI All-American at Arrowhead
The second of three nights at the inaugural ARMI Contractors All-American at the Arrowhead Speedway on Friday had more twists and turns than a convention of contortionists, but for Rodney Sanders it was a straight line to his fifth win of the year and set him up to collect his fifth USMTS crown.
The all-new state-of-the-art 1/3-mile dirt oval in Colcord, Okla., welcomed the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt for the three-day event on Thursday and delivered Jason Hughes from the longest winless drought of his career.
On Friday, a magnificent racing surface delivered to the tune of $5,000 for Sanders, and almost assuredly the $100,000 title and ownership of the second-ever Leon Ramirez Trophy.
Sanders set the pace for the start of the 40-lap main event on Friday, and built a 2.5-second lead by lap five over the No. 4 machines of Jeremy Nelson and Bo Day. He expanded his advantage to four seconds by the time he found the back of the field with ten laps complete.
That’s when the first of five caution flags waved and saved Sanders from having to deal with back-markers. On three other occasions, the yellow flag appeared just as Sanders could smell the tailpipe exhaust of the first lapped car.
While it did save him from traffic trouble, it also allowed erased big leads each time. The final one nearly cost him the win.
Nelson ran a distant second for the majority of the race, but kept it close with less than ten laps remaining. That’s when Timm tip-toed his way around the bottom to take second and challenge Sanders.
On Thursday, it was four-time national champion Hughes holding off Timm at the checkers by less than a half-second. On Friday, Sanders delivered the same fate to the second-generation racer from Winona, Minnesota.
“I know Jake’s been really good lately and I felt like I was pretty good around the top once we got rolling but there’s a lot of grip down there,” Sanders said. “I saw his nose down there and I felt like to win the race I had to at least go block a lap or two. I just didn’t want to overshoot it. It’s kind of hard running the top and then slow down on the bottom.
“I felt like I had a really good car early, but I didn’t know about the lapped cars. I didn't know where I needed to be. I moved around early and I felt pretty good on the bottom too.”
After advancing nine spots to finish sixth on Thursday, Sanders could have mailed it in and cruised safely to his fifth USMTS national championship over the final four events. But “The Rocket” instead was a cruise missile.
He kicked off Friday’s show by earning the Swift Springs Fastest Lap Award with the best qualifying time of the 58 entrants. He earned the Sybesma Graphics Pole Award and then led all 40 laps of the main event to assure himself the maximum points for the night.
His effort put him out of reach in the points race. All that’s left to do is sign in Saturday night, and again October 27-28 for the final weekend and he’ll be a five-time series champ and $100,000 richer.
“Hats off to the track guys. This is a complete 180 from last night so hats off to them. The race track was great tonight.”
Despite back-to-back runner-up finishes totaling less than one second behind a pair of four-time USMTS nationals champions, Timm was impressive as he climbed from tenth and eighth on the starting grid, respectively, to garner two second-place finishes.
Nelson, meanwhile, recorded his second top-five finish in his rookie season as he held off 16th-starting hard charger Tanner Mullens for third.
Dereck Ramirez rounded out the top five with Tom Berry Jr., Zack VanderBeek, Tyler Wolff, Hughes and Gary Christian completing the top ten.
Big money Saturday on tap: The biggest and highest-paying dirt modified show in Oklahoma history continues Saturday with the winner of the ARMI Contractors All-American main event earning $20,023 plus all feature race starters will take home no less than $1,200 each.
The pits open at 3 p.m. and grandstands open at 4. USMTS qualifying starts at 5:45 with the first green flag scheduled to wave at 6.

Hughes ends drought with homegrown victory at Arrowhead Speedway
Four-time USMTS national champion Jason Hughes snapped a gut-wrenching winless streak of more than six years on Thursday night during opening night of the inaugural ARMI Contractors All-America at the Arrowhead Speedway.
Located just five miles from his Hughes Racing Chassis shop in Colcord, Oklahoma, some home cooking at the all-new state-of-the-art 1/3-mile dirt oval was just what the doctor ordered.
It was six years, one month and six days ago when Hughes won his last main event with the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt—a victory at the Cresco (Iowa) Speedway that clinched his fourth title.
Thursday’s win was the 156th of his career and ended a dry spell of 167 events with the USMTS.
Another chassis builder, Kyle Brown of Madrid, Iowa, earned the Sybesma Graphics Pole Award and steered his No. 21K Harris Auto Racing machine to the lead and paced the first three laps before the race’s first caution slowed the action.
When racing resumed, Hughes wasted no time in picking off both Brown and Carlos Ahumada Jr. to snag the lead on lap four.
By the 20th lap, Hughes had more than a straight-away advantage over Jake Timm—who had just muscled his way into second place—when the yellow flag waved for the second time when the leader’s son and track champion Trevor Hughes got the short end of the stick in a wheel-banger in turn three.
It was the last yellow flag of the race and final green before Hughes rolled underneath the flagstand with the lead when the white and checkered flags waved to collect the $3,000 top prize—the same amount he won for his last USMTS victory six years ago.
“I was pretty good up front and just trying to take it easy,” Hughes said in Victory Lane. “I got up there and hit the wall, but I knew when we got that restart it was time to make the move and try to get out front.
“I think it rubbered quite a bit before I moved down, but I was still good enough up here, but I saw them start driving away from Zack (VanderBeek) so I said it’s time to move down. I didn't mind seeing the yellow but I didn't want to see (Trevor Hughes) sitting there. I know he had a pretty good car he had a good heat race and I wanted him racing up front with me.
The 49-year-old from nearby Watts, Okla., not only ended his long winless streak but also kept his hopes alive for a fifth USMTS crown.
“It’s been way too long,” Hughes said of his six-year drought. “We struggled for a while but the past little while we've had a really good car but not the luck it takes to win some of these races. But what better place to do it than right here at home.”
Fresh off a win at the 10th Annual Summit USRA Nationals, Timm of Winona, Minn., climbed from tenth on the starting grid to claim the runner-up honors with El Paso’s Ahumada, Tyler Wolff of Fayetteville, Ark., and rookie Gabe Hodges of Lebo, Kan., completing the top five.
Points leader Rodney Sanders advanced nine spots to finish sixth, followed by Cayden Carter, Wheeler, Brown and Swift Spring Fast Qualifier Steve Lavasseur.
Despite having the nose of his No. 75 Bloodline Race Cars whip, Terry Phillips earned the FK Rod Ends/KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award after clawing his way from 22nd to 12th.
