O’Neil gets Ed Gressel Memorial trophy

An explosive night of money and memories were made Saturday during the finale of the inaugural Ed Gressel Memorial at the 81 Speedway featuring the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt.

Before the start of the main event, racers lined up in their traditional four-wide salute to the fans but this night was extra special as the front row of cars was filled by Brandon Givens, Scott Green, Tanner Mullens and Jake O’Neil—all of whom have sat in the driver’s seat of a Gressel Racing USMTS Modified.

Dereck Ramirez bested Will Krup to take control of the feature race on the opening lap. Meanwhile, fourth-starting Jake Timm lost nearly 20 spots with an opening-lap miscue that saw him scoot through the infield, but found his way back into the top 10 by lap 10.

Ramirez and Krup raced side-by-side on laps 5 and 6 before Ramirez reached the back of field by lap 11 and began to distance himself from Krup as he navigated lapped traffic flawlessly.

Lap 24 saw Jason Hughes, running third, break just before the race’s midway point which resulted in the first caution of the contest. On the restart, Ramirez took the field back to green with Krup, 13th-starting Terry Phillips, Dan Ebert, Tom Berry Jr., Timm, O’Neil, Jacob Bleess, Gary Christian and Rodney Sanders filling the first 10 positions.

Phillips got by Krup on the restart while Berry followed T.P. into third the next time around. The next time around, Phillips screamed around the top and wrestled the lead away from Ramirez.

A second caution on lap 28 opened the door for O’Neil as he restarted fourth but became the new leader two laps later and proceeded to make his chasers get smaller and smaller in his rearview mirror (if USMTS allowed mirrors).

While O’Neil raced away, Timm continued his rebound with a pass of Ramirez for fifth with a dozen laps remaining. On lap 39, Darron Fuqua tagged the wall and then stopped to force the third yellow flag. Meanwhile, Phillips broke something under his Bloodline Race Cars machine and retired from the race under caution.

Back under green, O’Neil left the field in his wake. Timm passed Krup for second at the white flag and then narrowly lost the race for the runner-up paycheck to Berry at the checkered flag.

“Most people don’t know but (Ed Gressel) gave me my first chance out racing the tour and I really owe it to him and Cinde for being here. Honestly, if it wasn’t for them I probably wouldn’t be out here right now,” O’Neil revealed in his victory lane speech. “I would have never got that start to get going and I really got to thank them for everything they did for me.”

In picking up his first win of the year, O’Neil came alive midway through the race after tumbling as far back as 12th at one point. With 24 laps in the books he was 10th but seven laps later he was leading the main event.

“We’ve been down in the dumps lately because the car’s been so terrible--either the car is or I am, one or the other—but we talked to Jimmy (Owens) right before the feature and he pretty much said ‘You’re screwed’ but try this. We threw some crazy stuff at it just to try to do something and I was so tight at the beginning and so terrible I just gassed on it I don't know what to tell you, I just I did everything I could,” O’Neil said. “I think the starts definitely helped me. I had way too much gear and I’d  carry about 400 mph going into the corner and I couldn’t slow down so I just used that to my advantage.

“I couldn’t believe it, honestly. I was I was back there… I don’t know I felt like 150th or 10th but I was just fighting and digging everywhere I could to gain ground on somebody and then Jake Timm going out over here, then he passed me. I was like ‘Man, this ain’t good but I just entered wide open and I found a line that actually stuck. I slowed down a bunch (in turn 1) and quit blowing the tires off and that seemed to help. That's kind of when I noticed I got Dereck there and I felt a little bit of grip and as long as I kept my car straight I was okay.”

In the end, O’Neil was okay to the tune of $10,000 as the 31-year-old from Tucson, Ariz., notched his 29th career USMTS victory and third at the 81 Speedway while taking over the series points lead to boot.

While O’Neil, Berry and Timm shared the podium, Krup was a solid fourth with 14th-starting Rodney Sanders completing the top five. Cayden Carter was sixth while Wolff took a provisional to start 25th but found his way to a seventh-place effort. Ebert, Jeremy Nelson and Christian rounded out the top 10.

Following the Real Racing Wheels “B” Mains, the top eight drivers in heat race passing points competed in the six-lap Kansasland Dash 4 Cash. As the winner, Tanner Mullens accepted the $6,000 cash prize to give up the pole position to start 12th in the main event. He suffered mechanical problems and wound up 19th—one spot behind Ramirez who also did not finish the 50-lap distance.

Saturday’s prize started off at $1,000 thanks to Kansasland Tire, Rock Island Recycling, Duvall Electric and McCowan Farms but a flurry of donations over the last 24 hours led to an epic ballooning of the prize money to $5,000 if Mullens could have won the race.

Making it perhaps the richest six-lap dash in dirt racing history, special thanks to the following contributors: Becky Ramirez, Brian Franz, F.O.E. Enterprises, Cinde Gressel, RacinDirt, USMTS, J.R. Sandlian, Broadway Truck & Auto Salvage, Special T’s, Two M Motorsports, Action Engineering, Arrowhead Speedway, Darren Bennett, Brad Carger & Alysea Pressler, Mississippi Thunder Speedway, Mike & Elaine Sorensen, 1-800-JUNK-PRO, Chandler Dan’s Catering and the Chesterman family.

The Ed Gressel Memorial featured a special one-of-a-kind victory lane banner. The 10x20 sign was autographed by USMTS drivers, and then after Saturday’s finale one lucky person took home the banner from the silent auction that went on all weekend. The winner was Tom Paulson—a long-time racer and supporter of fellow drivers—with a $10,000 donation that will benefit a charity of Cinde Gressel’s choice.

During Saturday’s who, Jon Tesch stepped forward to award $500 to the 14th-place finisher. That money went to Brandon Givens, the last man to pilot a Gressel Racing race car.

Adam Gressel added $1,000 for the feature race’s hard charger, making it an $1,100 cash bonus to the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award winner. That prize went to Carter, who started 16rh and finished 6th. Provisional starters were not eligible

Chris Sutton with the RPM Speedway in Hays, Kan., awarded $100 to the 19th-place finisher in honor of the Gressel Racing No. 19R driven by Ryan Gustin, who garnered two Summit USMTS National Championships while driving for Gressel Racing. Oddly enough, that money went to Mullens, another former Gressel driver.

Webster City waiting: In just four short days, the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa, will host an open practice night on Wednesday, April 26, followed by three straight nights of action Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 27-29, for the 13th Annual Spring Classic.

Hungry Wolff whoops USMTS field at 81 Speedway

The Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt was back at the 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., for a second night of the inaugural Ed Gressel Memorial on Friday, and Tyler Wolff was back in flawless form as he notched his second wire-to-wire triumph of the 2023 campaign.

Several of his chasers stayed close early on but Wolff always found an extra burst of speed whenever anybody got close. Yellow flags on laps 13 and 22 wiped out his lead on two occasions, but both kept him from having to deal with a swarm of soon-to-be lapped cars.

Thursday’s winner, Tanner Mullens, and Cayden Carter kept Wolff in their sights but neither threatened the rim-riding Wolff for the lead. That all changed after the second restart when Rodney Sanders powered around the high side of the 3/8-mile dirt oval to jump from sixth to second in less than a lap.

From there, Sanders stayed within striking distance of Wolff, finally making a charge with two laps to go. ‘The Rocket’ peaked underneath Wolff’s No. 4W Lobo Racing machine but Gary Christian’s broken ride sitting at the top of turn 2 forced the race’s third yellow flag to wave.

Two more quick cautions occurred but on each occasion Wolff drove away from Sanders, eventually taking the checkers with about a five-car-length cushion over the four-time Summit USMTS National Champion.

Despite starting third, Wolff led all 35 laps and pocketed the $5,000 winner’s share of the prize money.

“I am a mess, I am wore out but that's a good run there,” an elated Wolff said in victory lane. “I knew that start would be critical and thought I’d had to take advantage of it. I gotta thank (Jimmy) Mars and ECE Racing Engines. We put a different engine in it and this thing screams. We’ve been having to tone it down all weekend.

“I trust Rodney very well and know that he’s not going to do anything crazy. He’s a teammate of mine so I really appreciate that, but it was awesome to see him up around behind me. It made me happy I knew that we had two good MB cars. and that’s good.”

RacinDirt co-owner/pit reporter Trenton Berry advised Wolff to get a designated driver if he went anywhere after his victory celebration because no Kansas State Trooper would believe he hadn’t been drinking.

“I got enough for bail, we’re good,” replied Wolff, who was soaked with warm Coors Light—one of Ed Gressel’s favorite beverages.

With the win, Wolff now has four at four racetracks in four states. He’s the first two-time winner this season and the 16th different winner in the 27 USMTS main events held at the 81 Speedway.

Behind Sanders, Jake O'Neil crossed the finish line third with Carter finishing fourth and Dereck Ramirez taking the checkers in fifth. Mullens, Tom Berry Jr., Terry Phillips, Tanner Black and Darron Fuqua completed the top 10.

After finishing second in the Kansasland Dash 4 Cash, Ramirez had the chance to start on the outside of Mullens on the front row when Mullens turned down the cash bonus, but the 2021 Summit USMTS National Champion opted to take $1,250 and start sixth, putting O’Neil in the second starting spot next to Mullens.

On Saturday, the Kansasland Dash 4 Cash is worth $1,000 with special thanks to Rock Island Recycling, Duvall Electric and McCowan Farms.

Racing continues Saturday with the Gressel Memorial finale that will see no less than $10,000 going to the winner. The JLR Property Management 316 A-Mods and AutoTech Service Super Stocks join the on-track action.

With his efforts Friday night, Wolff becomes the new points leader heading into Saturday’s finale and will bolt on the coveted dayglo orange Weiland Points Leader spoiler for tomorrow’s show. O’Neil jumped to second and Hughes slipped to third after sitting atop the rankings since the second event of the season. Phillips and Fuqua round out the top five.

For complete event information, check out the FAST FACTS or visit 81speedway.com.

• 81 Speedway will host a Cornhole Tournament and silent auction for door panels on Saturday. Winners will receive cornhole boards as prizes. Click here to register. Space is limited. The cost is $50 per team and the tournament starts at 10 a.m. for more information call (316) 304-1454 or email 81speedwayevents@gmail.com.

• VP Racing Fuels-Heartland is adding incentives to driver's in Saturday's main event. If the driver who starts 2nd wins, hey will get an extra $200 in honor of the Gressel Racing No. 2G driven by Brandon Givens. If the driver who starts 19th wins, he will get an extra $1,900 in honor of the No. 19R driven by Ryan Gustin. If the driver who starts 25th wins, he will get an extra $2,500 in honor of the No. 25 driven by Scott Green.

• The Ed Gressel Memorial features a special one-of-a-kind victory lane banner. The 10x20 sign will be autographed by USMTS drivers, and then after Saturday's finale one lucky person will take the banner home. Proceeds will go to the choice of Ed's widow Cinde Gressel. Bidding started Thursday.

• Adam Gressel will offer a $1,000 cash award for Saturday's hard charger, which could make it a total of $1,100 for the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award.

• Even more 'Reaper Madness' ensues as Chris Sutton with the RPM Speedway in Hays, Kan., has a crisp $100 bill for the 19th-place finisher in honor of the Gressel Racing No. 19R driven by Gustin, who garnered two Summit USMTS National Championships while driving for Gressel Racing.

Mullens hits home run in USMTS Ed Gressel Memorial opener

Tanner Mullens of Wichita got the better of polesitter Will Krup on the opening lap as the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt kicked off the opening night main event of the inaugural Ed Gressel Memorial at the 81 Speedway.

A caution on the fourth lap slowed the pace early on, but from there it was green flag racing with Mullens distancing himself from Krup, who gave way to Jeremy Nelson for the second spot on lap 10.

A flat tire for Nelson with four laps to go gave Mullens plenty of padding to cruise to his first USMTS win at his home track, but a flat tire on the VanderBuilt Race Car of Cayden Carter—last year’s Grant Junghans USMTS Rookie of the Year—with just two laps to go set a new tone for the final two-lap sprint to the end.

Mullens, 30, who was the top USMTS rookie in 2020, had no problems with the restart as he sailed to a margin of victory of more than two seconds over Jake Timm, who snagged the runner-up spot from Krup at the finish line after Krup also blew a tire just before he crossed beneath the checkered flags.

The win was worth $3,000 to Mullens—a three-time Hutchinson Nationals winner and 2017 NCRA champion. It was his first at 81 Speedway but the eighth of his career, tying him with Brandon Davis, Ryan Ruter, Tommy Weder Jr. and another former driver for Gressel Racing, Ricky Thornton Jr., on the all-time USMTS wins list. It was the 26th USMTS feature hosted by the 81 Speedway with Mullens becoming the 15th different winner.

After turning down $500 earlier after finishing second in the Kansasland Dash 4 Cash, it appeared Mullens made the right decision.

“The luck we’ve been having I didn’t want to put ourselves any further behind,” Mullens said in victory lane. “Obviously got to keep your right rear under you and when I got to lapped traffic I just kind of left a gap there in case somebody got beside me, but I just didn't want to push it and get tangled up in there.

After going two-for-two last weekend in the Sooner State with a win at the Red Dirt Raceway during the American Racer USRA Modified Series event, and then a dominating triumph in the USRA Modified season opener at the Longdale Speedway on Saturday, Mullens is in a Gressel-like groove for the next two nights.

“He kind of gave me my first taste to running USMTS and I’ll forever be grateful for that,” Mullens said of Ed Gressel who passed away last May and was a fixture at the 81 Speedway. “He was a really good guy and we’re all going to miss him.”

Behind Mullens, Timm and Krup it was Tom Berry Jr. and Zack VanderBeek completing the first five to the finish line. Sixth through tenth went to Jake O'Neil, six-time 81 Speedway winner Rodney Sanders, Terry Phillips, Jim Chisholm and Jason Hughes.

Both Krup and Mullens turned down $500 to start sixth in the main event after finishing first and second in the Kansasland Dash 4 Cash, so Friday’s value climbs to $1,250 ($750 plus $500 carried over). The same rules and procedures apply on Saturday where the Kansasland Dash 4 Cash is worth $1,000, but if Friday’s money is unclaimed then Saturday’s prize increases to a $2,250 dangling carrot.

The inaugural Ed Gressel Memorial continues Friday with a top prize of $5,000 up for grabs with JLR Property Management 316 A-Mods and AutoTech Service Super Stocks making up the undercard. Saturday’s finale will see no less than $10,000 going to the winner with the Heyglassman.com Stock Cars joining the show with the Summit USMTS Modifieds.

Joe Wright—a former crew member for Gressel Racing—put up $800 for long-distance travelers with $200 each to the farthest from each direction. The winners were Dan Ebert of Lake Shore, Minn. (776 miles north), Billy Jack Brutchin of Gladewater, Texas (487 miles south), Chase Holland, Success, Miss. (862 miles east) and Kelsie Foley of Tucson, Ariz. (1,017 miles west). Foley won the overall MVT Long Tow Award and an extra $100 for gas money.

• The Ed Gressel Memorial features a special one-of-a-kind victory lane banner. The 10x20 sign will be autographed by USMTS drivers, and then after Saturday's finale one lucky person will take the banner home. Proceeds will go to the choice of Ed's widow, Cinde Gressel. Bidding starts Thursday.
