Flawless O’Neil owns 2020 Featherlite Fall Jamboree
With his second win in as many nights, Jake O’Neil completed a dominating month of September at the Deer Creek Speedway with an impressive win at the 22nd Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree on Saturday night.
Thanks to a year turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s show was cut from three to two days so O’Neil won’t get the opportunity to match the effort by Jason Hughes five years ago when he topped all three nights of the event.
However, a decisive win three weeks ago here in the J&S JCB USMTS Labor Day Duel gives the 28-year-old from Tucson, Ariz., the distinct honor of being the only USMTS racer to win every USMTS main event at ‘The Creek’ in a single season.
“I come here on a local night and I tried something I probably never tried on a race day,” O’Neil said in victory lane. “For whatever reason, it worked and every time I come back I put the same setup on... I tell you what, this racecar I feel like anybody could drive it. If I can drive it, anybody could drive it.”
In scoring his 10th career USMTS victory, O’Neal pocketed $10,500 to increase his three-race loot to more than $20,000.
“Man, it’s just awesome. I don’t know what to say. This is very surreal. I didn’t really expect this. This weekend kind of went our way with our draws and being able to start up front and, man, I don’t know. It’s just a badass racecar.”
With the 32-car field starting three-wide, O’Neil started fourth on the inside of the second row. He was third by lap four, second one lap later and scooted underneath early leader Brad Waits to lead the eighth lap.
Following a lap-11 caution for Brandon Davis’s broken machine, O’Neil began to pull away from the field but Rodney Sanders moved into second on lap 13 and kept O’Neil within striking distance. Meanwhile, polesitter and defending Fall Jamboree champ Jacob Bleess was embroiled in an exciting three-way battle for third with Zack VanderBeek.
Fighting their way through thick lapped traffic, O’Neil and Sanders tip-toed away from the field when the second and final yellow flag waved for Dustin Sorensen with just five laps remaining. This gave hope to Jake Timm who found a daring line near the concrete wall to his liking and sat third when the race went back to green flag racing.
Timm disposed of Sanders but could not muster the muscle to challenge O’Neil for the lead. The two Jakes crossed the finish line first and second with O’Neil taking the top prize while Timm settled for a $5,000 second-place paycheck.
“I knew I needed to get out there early and try to set the pace, but at the same time I was really worried about my tires,” O’Neil revealed. “At the end I was kind of hanging on there. I felt it vibrating and I thought a tire was going down, and I was doing everything I could to just hold on.”
Sanders held on for third with VanderBeek and Bleess finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Tanner Mullens was sixth at the stripe with 16th-starting Cory Crapser in seventh, 17th-starting Lucas Schott eighth and 18th-starting Brooks Strength nabbing ninth. Jason Hughes, who started 22nd, rounded out the top 10.
Icon Concrete provided a $500 bonus to the main event winner. Rain Control Seamless Gutters awarded $200 to the racer accumulating the most heat race passing points. Sanders took the money after winning his heat race after starting last on the grid.
Spacek solid in Non-Qualifiers Race: Jeff Spacek of Phillips, Wis., held off Kasson’s Joel Alberts in a wildly entertaining Non-Qualifiers Race for the best 28 entries unable to make the main event. The 25-lap contest was worth $2,000 to the winner.
Cole Spacek finished third while USMTS legend Al Hejna took the fourth spot. Rookie Chase Rudolf came from 16th on the starting grid to grab the fifth position.
Spacek is the 16th different driver to win the event in it’s 19th running. Only Bob Timm (twice) and Steve Wetzstein (three times) have multiple victories in the Non-Qualifiers Race. None of the past winners were in Saturday’s lineup.
Summit Southern Nationals next: The USMTS will return to the RPM Speedway for the 2nd Annual Summit Southern Nationals presented by Super Clean on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 5-7, where the 2020 USMTS national champion will officially be crowned. Dereck Ramirez was the winner when the series was here two weeks ago.
The event is also the season finale in the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series for the Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks and USRA Limited Mods which join the action all three nights. USRA Tuners will compete Friday and Saturday in their nationwide points finale.

O’Neil notches another USMTS win in Featherlite Fall Jamboree opener
On a night filled with jaw-dropping dirt modified racing action, Jake O’Neil continued his mastery of the Deer Creek Speedway on Friday with a crowd-pleasing victory on opening night of the 22nd Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree.
“Man , we’ve just been working really, really hard,” O’Neil said. “I just can’t say enough about Jimmy Owens. I get the basic kind of figured out a little bit, and then he gives me a spark every once in a while. I tell you what, whatever we hit on here this things rolling. We don’t have to change too much here as long as the track’s fairly smooth.”
Whether it’s the long hours and hard work by the veteran track crew, the architecture of the racetrack or just plain magic, ‘The Creek’ always finds a way to deliver incredible racing and exceptional value for the price of admission.
Friday night’s show was no exception as the America’s annual marquee dirt modified event produced unbelievable action from beginning to end, provided by legends of the sport and legends in the making.
Of the 110 previous USMTS features ran at the Deer Creek Speedway, 23 times the checkered flag waved for one of the three racers on Friday night’s formidable front row. Coming into the night, Terry Phillips had five and Brandon Davis had four while Jason Hughes boasted a series-best 14 wins here.
The 32-car main event field took the green flag three-wide and ten-plus rows deep with Phillips grabbing the lead on the opening lap from polesitter Davis and outside front-row starter Hughes.
While Phillips slowly put space between himself and Hughes, John Doelle got by Davis for third on the third lap and challenged Hughes for second. Meanwhile, there were multiple slide-jobs, cross-overs and four-wide racing happening every lap throughout the field and O’Neil was clawing his way to the front from his 12th starting spot.
While still leading on the 15th lap, Phillips reached the back of the field. This allowed Hughes and the rest of his pursuers to narrow the gap as the lead pack drove inside, outside and in between back-markers in very turn.
Undaunted, Phillips continued to set the pace when Jake Timm smacked the outside wall in turn two while racing inside the top five on lap 22. His car slowed considerably to bring about the race’s first and only yellow flag, allowing the competitors and fans a chance to finally breathe after a heart-stopping first half of the 40-lapper.
When the green light shined again, Phillips pulled away again while Hughes followed in second with O’Neil glued to his rear bumper. In a three-wide race to the flagstand, Davis passed both Hughes and O’Neil while O’Neil passed Hughes for third.
One lap later, O’Neil had second place in his grasp and set his sights on Phillips.
O’Neil caught the leader with ten laps to go and it was visibly apparent that Phillips’ mount was not handling as well as it did early on. A few passes back and forth between the two resulted in O’Neil seizing control on lap 34 and then speeding away to claim his ninth career victory in the Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s.
It was O’Neil’s second straight USMTS triumph at the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located just outside of Spring Valley, Minn. His first win here came just 20 days ago when he drove his No. 0 LG2 by Owens machine to a dominating win in the Labor Day Duel.
“We took last weekend off to make sure this thing was 100% prepared for this weekend. I’ve been wanting to win here for a long time. To get it last time I was super-motivated.
“I knew we had a pretty good car there, it was just being at the right place a the right time, you know. I had a lot more straight-away speed I think with my gear I had. Everybody’s kind of on the same motor package these days.”
After an additional two grand was added to the top spot by Red Tail Tackle, O’Neil’s take-home pay was $7,000.
Davis, who slipped back as far as sixth around the halfway mark, powered past Phillips at the finish line to steal runner-up honors while Hughes held off Rodney Sanders for fourth. Dustin Sorensen, Tanner Mullens, Zack VanderBeek, Jacob Bleess and Dereck Ramirez rounded out the top 10.
