Starks Caps Short Track Nationals Debut With Charge to Top 10

Inside Line Promotions - LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Nov. 7, 2016) - Trey Starks progressed throughout his debut at I-30 Speedway last weekend during the 29 th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires.

Not only did he improve his result during each night at the tripleheader, Starks and the Jeff McCall owned team capped the event with a top-10 finish out of approximately 60 competitors.

"It ended up being a pretty good weekend," Starks said. "We started out pretty slow, but we progressed over the weekend and adapted to the track more and more. We kept moving forward and plugging away. Each night we got better. I would say it was a successful weekend."

The action began on Thursday with Starks finishing where he started - eighth - in a heat race. That relegated him to a C Main, where he advanced to place fourth and miss a transfer by only one spot.

"We had high draws all weekend," he said. "With the track conditions being really wet on Thursday we couldn't get by anyone. It was our first night on a short track with the No. 23 car so we were trying to adapt."

The team showed improvement the following night as Starks maneuvered from sixth to second place in a heat race. He ended sixth in a qualifier, which relegated the team to a B Main. Starks won the consolation race to transfer to the main event, in which he picked up a trio of positions before the track took rubber.

"We ran good in our heat, which put us fourth in points," he said. "The qualifier was tough for us. We were working on cars, but when the dust settled we ended up in our starting spot. We had to fight from a B Main.

"In the A Main the track took rubber way early so it made it tough to pass. We picked off a couple of cars early and then pulled in line in 13th and that's where we ended up."

The event concluded on Saturday. Starks powered from seventh to third in a heat race before he again won a B Main to lock himself into the 16th starting position for the 40-lap main event.

"I picked off as many cars as I could on restarts," he said. "The track became one lane around the bottom. At least the second half of the race every car was on the bottom and there wasn't much ground we could make up. We got a decent top-10 finish with a stout field. I would say we made the most of it."

Starks charged from 16th to post a ninth-place finish, which was his 22nd top 10 of the season. He finished second best out of the rookies there.

Sides Survives Numerous Incidents at Short Track Nationals

Inside Line Promotions - LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Nov. 7, 2016) - Jason Sides had to dodge quite a few near wrecks last weekend during the 29th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires.

"I felt like this year we had a target on our back," he joked. "Every time we went out we were almost crashed or into some melee. It was wacky."

The action began at I-30 Speedway last Thursday when Sides was nearly involved in multiple crashes during the first lap of the opening heat race.

"We went from third to first to fifth in one lap," he said. "It didn't go as planned."

Sides rebounded to finish third before he maneuvered from eighth to fourth place in a qualifier. That locked him into the 14th starting position for the main event.

"The first night the track was kind of wet and rough," he said. "We made some passes. I felt pretty good about it. In the feature we just didn't get going as well as we wanted."

Sides picked up a handful of positions and he battled for a top 10 before finishing 11th.

He returned to the quarter-mile oval on Friday for Round 2 of the event. Sides powered from seventh to third place in a heat race before he placed fifth in a qualifier. That relegated him to a B Main, which Sides won to lock into the 15th starting position in the A Main.

"They tilled the track to help it out," he said. "They thought it may keep it from getting rubbered up. We ended up tightening the car up a lot. We got going pretty early before the rubber. Then we really struggled because you tightened the car up to make it work on the slick track and now you have a really, really tight car in the rubber."

Sides held on for a 12th-place result.

The weekend concluded on Saturday with Sides winning a heat race from the pole position. He then finished second in a B Main to lock into the 17 th starting position for the main event.

"We had moved forward and I think we were up to 10th or 11th," he said. "I lost brakes so I rode around. I was hoping for a red flag to give us a chance to fix it. I got lapped. Without brakes and being a lap down I didn't want to take a chance of tearing up my equipment or anyone else's so I pulled off early."

Sides was credited with an 18th-place finish.

Bruce Jr. Scores Top Five During Short Track Nationals Preliminary Night

Inside Line Promotions - LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Nov. 7, 2016) - Tony Bruce Jr. produced a solid outing last weekend during the 29th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires at I-30 Speedway.

However, Bruce Jr. and the Smith Family owned team opened the action at the quarter-mile oval last Thursday on a rough note.

"Our weekend started off bad because I got upside down in the heat race," Bruce Jr. said. "It was one of those racing deals. You have to erase it from your memory and move on to the task at hand."

Bruce Jr., who was in a three-way battle for second place on the opening lap, was unable to restart the race after making contact in turn four. The flip relegated him to the back of a C Main, in which Bruce Jr. rallied from 11th to finish fourth - only one spot shy of a transfer to the back of a B Main.

Night 2 of the event was a different story for the team, which kicked off Friday's race by winning a heat race before maneuvering from fourth to second place during a qualifier. That ranked Bruce Jr. fourth out of nearly 60 competitors and locked the team into the fourth starting position for the main event.

"Our car was rolling really nice," he said. "We were able to advance into a good starting spot for the feature. I felt like we had a car that could get us in a top-three spot and locked into Saturday's feature, but unfortunately the track took rubber early. Once the rubber came we were single file on the bottom."

Bruce Jr. maintained fourth position throughout the feature. It marked his ninth top five of the season.

The event wrapped up on Saturday with Bruce Jr. advancing from eighth to fifth place in a heat race. That locked him into the 13th starting position for the 40-lap feature.

"It was a little disappointing because in the heat race we weren't as good as we had been all week," he said. "For some reason we weren't very good. We were able to squeak in and make the show. Then in the A Main we weren't as good as we had been all week either. We didn't end how we wanted to, but to be as fast and as competitive as we were, I definitely feel like the weekend was a success. I want to thank the Smith Family for the opportunity."

Bruce Jr. ended with a 12th-place result.

He will return to action on Dec. 17 at Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin, Ill., for the Junior Knepper 55 with the USAC Midget Racing Series.

Swindell Sweeps Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway for Fourth Title

Inside Line Promotions - LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Nov. 7, 2016) - Sammy Swindell was a man on a mission last weekend during the 29th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires.

Swindell, who was driving for A.G. Rains during the $15,000-to-win event at I-30 Speedway, captured the opening preliminary night before recording his fourth career triumph during the prestigious event. He also won in 2013, 2011 and 1990.

"It just shows a lot," Swindell said. "The car has never missed a beat. We never had a problem. It always runs well. We can make changes and everything responds. When we need to do something different because the track changes it responds. A lot of cars I've driven you have to be dead on or you're terrible. This one here seems like just get it close and it's fine."

Swindell was better than close all weekend. He opened the action on Thursday by winning a heat race after starting on the outside of the second row. Swindell then picked up two positions to place fourth in a qualifier. That ranked him second in points out of more than 60 drivers.

"That put us in a good position to start up front," he said. "Usually the inside is better to start there and that was true again. I was able to stay with (Tim) Crawley. I ran right there with him for a few laps and maybe showed him a thing or two. He changed what he was doing some. We got to traffic and he ran a different line and that gave me the opportunity to pass him for the lead."

Swindell took the lead on Lap 12 and cruised to the victory, which locked him into Saturday's dash.

"It was huge because we knew we're going to be in the first three rows no matter what," he said.

Swindell started the dash fifth after a fellow competitor gave him the No. 5 card during the revenge draw.

"With six cars it wasn't going to be make or break where we started in the dash," Swindell said. "I guess it's a compliment that as soon as a high card is drawn they give it to me. It's happened to me at Knoxville. It happens at the Chili Bowl. We've been able to overcome it quite a few times. We went from fifth right up to third in the first lap or so."

Swindell advanced from fifth to third in the dash to start the 40-lap feature on the inside of the second row.

"I was wanting the car to be tight enough because the track was going to get slicker," he said. "I knew if we'd be really good at the start that we were going to get looser toward the end. Our car was a bit tight, but we were able to stay with the guys. We got to second pretty early. (Tim) Shaffer had the best line and that gave me an opportunity to try things just like on Thursday where I could see what worked and didn't work."

Swindell advanced to second place in the first couple of laps before he spent approximately a dozen laps stalking Shaffer for the lead. Swindell took over the top spot on Lap 15 and never looked back as he claimed his third crown in the last six years.

"A.G. and the guys gave me a great car," he said. "Sometimes even if you have the best car you don't win and this time we were able to pull it off."

Swindell will wrap his season up this Friday and Saturday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., where he will tackle the Flip Flop 50 with the USCS Series while driving for Rains.

Nov. 3 - I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark. - Heat race: 1 (4); Qualifier: 4 (6); Feature: 1 (2).

Davidson Scrap Metal Processors, High Performance Lubricants, FK Rod Ends, Simpson Racing Products, Sweet Manufacturing, Brown & Miller Racing Solutions, Schoenfeld Headers, MyRacePass and Inside Line Promotions for their continued support.
