Chris Wall Claims Wild P.R.O. Series Opener

Columbus, Mississippi (03/13/10) – “The Intimagator” Chris Wall from Holden, Louisiana rocketed his way to the $2,000 victory in the wildly exciting debut of the Promoters Racing Organization (P.R.O.) Super Late Model Dirt Car Series on Saturday night at Columbus Speedway.

Thirty-Eight Super Late Models, representing six states entered the event at the 1/3 mile, high-banked oval.  Columbus Speedway is tabbed the “Baddest Bullring in the South,” and on Saturday night it once again validated its name in an event that saw several different leaders along with three and four wide racing throughout the night.

Bub McCool from Vicksburg, Mississippi started the evening’s festivities by setting fast time around the clay oval to earn the Southern Belle Pole Position for the 40 lap feature.  McCool was joined on the front row for the main event by Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth from Northport, Alabama.  As the feature went green, Bub McCool blasted to the lead with Hollingsworth, Billy Moyer Jr., William Thomas, and Klint Byars in tow.

During the opening rounds the top three cars would battle three wide for the lead with McCool maintaining a slim advantage.  By the third lap, Hollingsworth was applying heavy pressure to McCool for the lead, and the duo would swap the lead several times over the next few laps as McCool worked the extreme highside of the track with Hollingsworth working the middle of the track.  Entering turn one on lap 7, McCool would make a daring move in lapped traffic, which sent him skating toward the wall.  He would recover, but not before Hollingsworth bolted to the lead.

By lap 10, the leaders were engaged in heavy lapped traffic as 11th starting Chris Wall cracked the top three, and began to reel in the front-runners.  Five laps later, Wall would use the low-line to race past McCool for the second position.

The first caution of the event would fly on lap 20 when Dean Carpenter climbed the turn two wall.  Carpenter would be able to continue as he joined the back of the pack.  At the time of the caution the top five running order consisted of Hollingsworth, Wall, McCool, David Breazeale, and William Thomas.

On the ensuing double file restart, Bub used the highside to rocket past Wall and Hollingsworth to take the lead as the crowd came to their feet.  Four laps later, Wall would race past Hollingsworth, who had begun to fade with mechanical woes on the front of his mount.  With Wall on the hub and McCool on the extreme high-side, the lead duo battled for the lead for the next four laps before Wall took the lead on lap 27.  One lap later McCool would retake possession of the top spot, but his reign at the front would come to an end on lap 29, when contact with the backstretch wall bent the rearend, bringing his night to an end.

As the field prepared to restart for the final time Wall was the leader with Hollingsworth, Burroughs, Breazeale, and Thrash (started 16th) rounding out the top five.  On the restart Burroughs moved past Hollingsworth for second as Chad Thrash moved to the fourth spot.  One lap later, Thrash raced past Hollingsworth for second as Wall built a straightaway lead on the field.

The remainder of the event went caution free with Wall claiming the win over Chad Thrash, Anthony Burroughs, David Breazeale, and Dane Dacus.

In victory lane, Wall thanked his crew for preparing an awesome race car, and commented “The crew did their job all night, but the driver dropped the ball in time trials, so I had to really get up on the wheel in the feature.  The car was just awesome!”

Chad Thrash claimed the American Race Tires Hard Charger Award after advancing from his 16th starting position to a 2nd place finish.

Chris Wall was the recipient of the Hoosier Race Tires Top Performer Award for his win.

The P.R.O. Dirt Car Series will return to action with the tour’s second event at North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, Alabama on Saturday, March 20th with a $2,500 to win/$250 to start event.  For more information on North Alabama Speedway, please visit www.NorthAlabamaSpeedway.com .
