Winchester Speedway Race Coverage

WINCHESTER, Tenn. -- July 21. Not to be outdone by the success of the father and son winners Fred Prosser, Sr. and son Freddie, Jr. the previous week at Winchester Speedway, Open Wheel Modified ace Alan Holmes joined son Cory in Victory Lane before heading back to Fayetteville on Saturday night.

In the most fiercely contested race of the night, the elder Holmes dogged Estill Springs driver Shannon Davis from the top side of the track before driving around into the lead and winning by the narrowest of margins.

During the early part of the race, Holmes slipped up the track and gave up second to David Jackson. Jackson then tried to hug the bottom of the track, a real challenge on this slippery surface. As Jackson's rear end swung out in turn four, Holmes rallied around the outside to recover second on lap 12, then reel in Davis for the last few laps of the race. He finally secured the lead in the final turns to seal his fourth win of the season.

Rounding out the top five were Davis, Jackson, Mark Hadden, and Corey Holmes.

In his 600 cc Modified Mini feature, the younger Holmes quickly took his #6 car to the lead from row four and dominated the remainder. He was followed by Freddie Prosser, Jr. and Jeff Smith.

Driving a different #04 car than the one that took him to Victory Lane a few weeks ago, McMinnville driver Jason Todd picked up his second trophy of the season in the Modified Street division.

Fayetteville's James Sullivan held a brief early lead before getting loose and slipping to fourth place as Todd drove into the lead on lap two. Last week's winner, Brian Hudson, grabbed second, and Clint Morris snared third, only to spin from position a half lap later.

For Todd, the race was far from won just yet as Hudson battled his way into the lead after the restart. Hudson's lead ended early, however, as he coasted into the infield with mechanical trouble, and Todd coasted for the remainder to win over Sullivan, David Russell, Morris, and Chad Stone.

Jerry Ashley drove a dominant race from flag to flag to win the Super Late Model feature. Randy Gifford gave Ashley some early pressure in the Billy Harris #316, but faded back and fell from the top five as Mark Haddon worked his way into second.

With Ashley getting the win over Haddon, David Jackson ran a strong third until giving up that spot to Shannon Davis. Jackson finished fourth ahead of Ronnie Caldwell and Gifford.

Haddon came back to claim the 2-bbl. Late Model feature after catching early leader Steve Garner on the outside of the race track as the field completed lap eight. Garner ran a strong race to finish second over Shane Henley, Terry Fowler, and Randy Judge.

John Whaley was equally dominant in the Pure Stock feature from the start. Josh Bondurant raced in a distant second at the finish while holding off Scott Blackwell. Stacy Scott and Josh Edwards trailed Blackwell at the finish.

Machester Mini-Stock driver Jonathan Smartt continued as the most successful driver at the track to date, grabbing an early lead and holding it for the duration.

With Smartt in control up front, Josh Ingleberger scooted around the outside of Lee Farless and Michael Williams to take second as those two fought for that same position early on. The battle ended early for them, however, as they were invloved in a multiple car tangle that would end the night early for Farless and have Williams playing catchup from the rear of the field.

Ingleberger maintained his hold on second until finally chasing winner Smartt across the finish line, while James Summers held third ahead of the returning Williams. Chad Carter completed the top five.

Clyde Petty contolled the pace in Outlaw Pony action to take his fifth win of the season, leading Joe Burns, Roland McElvie, Jeremy Darnell, and Colten Roberts.

After breaking away from a fierce three-car battle for the lead early in the 1000 cc Modified Mini-Mod feature Freddie Prosser, Jr. exchanged the lead with Jeff Smith a couple of times before finally racing to a narrow win in the same #07 car that took his Father, Fred Prosser, Sr. to last week's win in the division. Prosser, taking his second win of the year, was chased to the finish by Smith and Troy Taylor.

Young Lebanon, Tenn. driver Michael Wood raced to his second 750 cc Mini-Mod triumph of the season, leading a pair of lady racers, Trish Follis and Angie Davidson
