Clayhill Motorsports
6th Annual Street Stock Championship
Aug. 28, 29, & 30
By: Jonathan Gowan, Atwood, TN
Atwood, TN: Clayhill Motorsports hosted the biggest, baddest, three day event in the history of West, TN. Little did we know on Thursday that we would have our first repeat winner in the history of this event. After 50 hard fought laps T.J. Herndon #3D from Atwood, TN would become that first driver to break the 5 year streak of different winners to take home the richest purse ever handed out at Clayhill Motorsports, as $10,000 would slide into the pocket of T.J. Herndon.
At the drop of the green flag, T.J. Herndon would find himself starting on the front row alongside the reigning champion of this event, Jared Wagster #9W from Scott City, MO. For the first 25 laps, Wagster was untouchable, but on lap 26, he would bring out the caution slowing with intermittent electrical problems forcing him to retire from the event. On the restart T.J. Herndon would assume the lead with Claudie Cook #54 in second, and Matt Cooper #18 in third.
Back on lap 20, Herndon, during a caution, would find his left rear brake pads fallen out onto the front straight leaving him with no brakes at all, but driving with no brakes only got easier after Wagster’s troubles on lap 26 placing Herndon with a clear path out front. On lap 31, Matt Cooper made the charge on Claudie Cook for the second spot, and by lap 32, Cooper had his sights set on Herndon for the lead. Herndon, with no brakes and a clear path ahead only seemed to get faster, sliding gently into each corner and getting back in the gas without much problem, he would stretch his lead out to over 15 car lengths with Matt Cooper having to settle for the runner up spot for the second year in a row.
With that same clear view of only one turn to go, his right hand on the wheel and his left fist pumping with joy out the driver side window, T.J. Herndon could see the double checkered flags high atop the flag stand, becoming the first repeat winner in the 6th Annual Street Stock Championship.
